  • 4 English teams in the European finals. Written in the stars
Also means that one team from Liverpool or Spurs will be going to the Club World Cup in December - In addition the Super Cup in August (?) will also be an all English affair

Might even be Spurs v Arsenal...
They'll both be going......but not in December. And either Chelsea or Arsenal will be joining them.

FIFA have scrapped the 2019 and 2020 World club cups and will now host an extended competition every 4 years.

"The new tournament, planned to start in 2021, will be held every four years instead of annually, would feature 24 teams and 31 matches. It would include all UEFA Champions League winners, UEFA Champions League runners-up, Europa League winners and Copa Libertadores winners from the four seasons up to and including the year of the event, with the remainder qualifying from the other four confederations."

However i think European clubs have threatened to boycott it, so not exactly sure what will happen.

  • Baku stadium capacity 68,700 arsenal and chelsea given 6000 tickets each what a sorry state football has become 1st of all having a london derby 2500 miles away 2nd of all the “official” day trip with arsenal excluding ticket £989.00 pretty much in and out straight after match is there no criteria to having finals in these inaccessible countries!! As really is a load of bollocks to the fans, and doesn’t look like improving next years finals in gdansk and Istanbul.

I hate uefa and everything it stands for corrupt cnuts
I looked on Skyscanner for flights to Baku, it's almost quicker to get to Australia.

As an aside, looking at travel to get out there(and elsewhere) can be misleading.

I looked at London to Baku return for a mate, it's a nightmare with changes and cost.  However, if you fly London to Ukraine return it's a £100 return.  Then buying a Ukraine to Bake return is about £500.
    Appreciably cheaper booking this way.

These venues are decided 1-2 years in advance, before they even knew which sides would even be in the competition never mind the final.

They can't just host the finals in the main European countries every year. From 2009-17 the CL finals were held in Rome, Madrid, London, Munich, London again, Lisbon, Berlin, Milan and Cardiff. All of those pretty easy to access.

What i don't get though is how Istanbul gets to host the super cup in August........and then the CL final next season. Admittedly in different stadiums, but still the same city.

The whole tournament has been created as part of the ongoing tug of war between UEFA and FIFA.

Lots of different issues involved but on the majority the top clubs and UEFA now see eye to eye. Which is good as it’s almost put the final nail in the coffin of any European super league talk.

Steps taken recently, such as the top 4 nations having automatic group stage places in the CL for their top 4 clubs. UEFAs main reason for agreeing to this was to halt any momentum the super league idea had.

FIFA want a tournament to rival both the CL and UEFAs new baby, the Nations League. So they’ve come up with this replacement for the Confederations Cup. But scheduled at the same time as all the lucrative pre season tours etc clubs are not happy. Even if a boycott doesn’t happen it’ll be treated as a friendly tournament which is understandable really, how else will all these clubs have a productive pre season. It would give an advantage to the sides not involved ahead of the domestic season

What sides in close proximity to Baku are likely to be involved? That’s my issue, of course you can have it in main European cities as that’s where the finalists come from.

Well obviously none near to Baku but my point is UEFA represents all the nations (which is over 50) in UEFA so have to surely be seen to spread finals around.

Now obviously many of those countries won't have a suitable modern enough stadium with over 60k capacity, so that rules out a lot, but of those that do they have a chance to host a final.
  • I think Arsenal are going to win in in the final, not sure who is going to come out as top dog, lack of goals, or i bang em in?
  • Four Day train journey... thats what a Charlton fan would call hardcore porn!!

  • You cannot get a direct flight from

    England
    spain
    france
    germany

laughable at best the official partner of arsenal now has a 2 night flight deal but no transfers or tickets or hotel included for £1150!!!! Football created by working men ruined by the greedy pigs

  • Absolute disgrace that each club has only been given 6k tickets!

    Who else gets tickets?

There surely cannot be 56k tickets given to sponsors?

Chelsea are playing a charity friendly match in the US 3 days before the EL final! A good cause but terrible preparation for a final
  • That ticket allocation is shocking, not sure Istanbul being a comparison is fair though, I visit regularly with work and find it a fantastic, welcoming, vibrant city, its a footballing city and worthy of hosting a final.

I think you've mis-read that. The friendly is next week, so they'll still have 2 weeks to prepare for the final which isn't until the 29th.

Also having already sealed a CL spot for next season, i assume Sarri will play the reserves v Leicester on Sunday.

The Arsenal/Chelsea ticket allocation is pathetic - 6000 each in a stadium that holds 68000 - but the logic seems to be that as the city is so hard to get to, that's all the number UEFA thought could realistically get there! Which does beg the question as to why Uefa chose Baku...
  • The sponsors will fly in their own guests.

Not too much of an issue as Arsenal have sold under 3,000 and Chelsea just over 600.
  • Should be an absolutely cracking atmosphere then!

Less 'actual' fans than you'd get at a non league game, mixed in with 60k corporate w*nkers. Well done UEFA.

Tiny number, but the difference probably reflects the fact that the match means much more to Arsenal than Chelsea, who are already in the Champions League anyway

Chelsea have sold more than 600. I read elsewhere that their season ticket holders had only bought 600 prior to them being released for members to buy.

£979 for a day trip with Thomas Cook sounds like a bit of a piss take though. Surely they could have come up with a more competitive price than that. You can get flights and a 4 star hotel all inclusive for 2 weeks in the Caribbean for less than that.

  • As only can get there via chartered flights there are no day trips available a pal is doing it, the ONLY options available were a day trip with arsenal which sold out within 10 mins or sport options 2 day trio which is £1050.00 and doesn’t include hotel or transfers was told last week that they would depart at 7am Tuesday land back to london 7pm Thursday afternoon in and out of Gatwick yesterday were told they would depart at 11am and land back at 3pm on Thursday and they’ve changed it to Luton also that a small bag only could be taken as limited space on board and basically they won’t be paying for baggage handlers - I think the decision for it to be Baku is ridiculous I think only Berlin and instanbul are the only places with regular flights there
  • Missing out on a Europa League final because they cant gurantee his safety

I am sure Arsenal will cope, still in this day and age a bit of joke but as is the whole fiasco its even in Baku, clueless
  • I understand he is not going because his safety can't be guaranteed. For me, the game has to be played elsewhere if he has been told that by the relevant authorities rather than him and Arsenal assuming it! You can't have that surely!
  • I'm all for the finals being spread around but the location decided must have easily accessible transport links and accommodation.

In this instance Baku has neither.

I suppose with UEFA acquiring more and more Asian countries under their association this will happen again in the future.

Bigger question has to be asked... What would UEFA have done had an Armenian team somehow reached the Final

Taken from the Euro 2020 Qualifying post on Wikipedia

Political clashes: The following pairs of teams could not be drawn into the same group due to political clashes: Gibraltar / Spain, Kosovo / Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo / Serbia. (Armenia / Azerbaijan and Russia / Ukraine were also identified as political clashes, but the teams in these pairs were in the same pots for the draw.)

Surely these countries (maybe not Gibraltar / Spain because I imagine they're grown up enough to come to an Agreement) should be denied the chance to either host a Major Tournament or Major Final

Or will have Euro 2020 being messed about with because of political issues between some Nations (i.e. Russia | Azerbaijan are all hosting games for Euro 2020 so will we see a repeat issue like this should Armenia themselves qualify yet find themselves in Group A that'll have them playing in Baku)

Arsenal may be able to cope but thats not the point

The point is a footballer is having to m8ss a major european final because his safety cannot be guaranteed
  • This just gets more ridiculous. South American football was mocked for the fiasco concerning the second leg of the Copa Libertadores last year. At least they had the sense to move it when it became apparent that it wouldn't be safe to stage it at River Plate's ground.

Already too many brown envelopes exchanged for UEFA to consider altering the venue. I hope there are big blocks of empty seats visible, but I'm sure they'll just fill it up with locals.

Absolutely disgraceful that Mkhitaryan's safety can't be assured

I'd love to know what UEFA have said about this Mkhitaryan situation.

No doubt they'll just brush it under the carpet and say it would've been fine and it's the players choice not to go.

Probably fine him for refusing to play when he's clearly not injured
