Halal meat in Asda

I've obviously not been inside the store for a while as I noticed a chilled counter with 'Halal food'. I was genuinely shocked to see it there. I know that some brands stun the animals before killing them, but they also had meat that doesn't pre-stun. What is the world coming to? This was fecking ASDA, not some back-street butcher.

I take it this is the Swanley branch? I’m surprised that there’s the demand for it round that neck of the woods in all honesty1
-
Does it taste any different..??0
-
Yep the Swanley one. I guess I've missed it when shopping online. I've not searched the virtual shelves for Halal food before!buckshee said:I take it this is the Swanley branch? I’m surprised that there’s the demand for it round that neck of the woods in all honesty

It ain't just Asda, I'm sure I heard a lot of food outlets, government departments and stores sell it as default meat now. Might be wrong on that though0
-
Would you be moaning if it were Kosher?16
-
Did they insist you buy it? Or were you allowed to choose something else?9

I'm out of touch. Ignorance is blissi_b_b_o_r_g said:It ain't just Asda, I'm sure I heard a lot of food outlets, government departments and stores sell it as default meat now. Might be wrong on that though

Personally speaking, it ain't the fact that it's halal, it's the unethical dispatching of an animal, whether it's halal, kosher or just bad practice. All the years we've taken to educate producers and installing rules and regulations for the ethical treatment of domestic and wild animals, just for it to be overlooked because of religion.33

Ah. Religion. Pretty much the cause of most heartache.9

Personally won’t eat it, as it puts a lot of British butchers out of business as the whole halal process only employs a certain religion and that’s wrong imo!
It’s also extremely cruel.
Edit this goes with any meat hats ridiculous religious bs were animals aren’t humanely slaughtered.10 -

Can you explain that? How would the method of slaughter of an animal put a butcher out of business? What nationality of butcher is replacing the British butchers who are displaced?3 -
Sure you have to be Muslim to slaughter the animal as you have to say a prayer before it’s slaughtered or it becomes haram ( non halal meat ).Chizz said:

Apologies the post should of read non-Muslim butchers.
Hope that clears things up2 -
It's a "personal choice" and an "expression of feminism" when one chooses to cover their head and face for
religiouscultural reasons, but I'm not sure how the slaughter of animals by methods in direct contravention to the law of the land can be explained away, but hang about, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to offer one....0 -
Been looking for some Halal pork chops for ages.
Thanks for the tip.19 -

So you're suggesting that a lot of non-muslim butchers are being replaced by Muslim butchers? OK.palarsehater said:

The halal slaughter process involves purging the body of blood as quickly as possible in order to make the meat taste better. This is achieved by slitting its throat whilst it is still fully conscious. But worse still, it's heart is made to beat faster by terrifying it. This is achieved by making it wait in line for its turn, watching the animals in front of it being dispatched. I used to eat it as my wife is Muslim, having researched more about it, I won't ever touch it again. Barbaric! It should be banned, but it won't be, too many "do gooders" , more concerned with religious rights, than the welfare of animals.24

Didn't realise there were so many vegetarians on this forum.
Personally I'm happy to eat dead animals but each to their own.

"UK Food Standards Agency figures from 2011 suggest 84% of cattle, 81% of sheep and 88% of chickens slaughtered for halal meat were stunned before they died.
Supermarkets selling halal products say they stun all animals before they are slaughtered. Tesco says the only difference between the halal meat it sells and other meat is that it was blessed as it was killed."
The article is from 2014, so may not reflect the current situation entirely, but I'd be surprised if things are wildly different now.6 -

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Whether the animal dies instantly or dies screaming in agony , it’s dead and died for you meat eaters for you to enjoy.
Is it a religious thing or something to ease your mind how the animal dies.5
