This is a football club. Every football club's core foundations and future are its supporters. How is it ever seen as acceptable to run a football club and attempt to drive contact and relationship with supporters further apart rather than closer ?

Lots of concern here about the running of our club, and the risk in alienating anybody. So are we to assume Mr Protheroe is actually running the club day by day?
Is Mr Protheroe a sort of time and motion man suggesting ideas about structure and stuff for owners to implement? Or is Mr Protheroe the man in charge in situ dealing with all the daily problems in running the whole kit and caboodle?
Anybody know what Mr Protheroe's brief actually is?0 -
It's so long ago Off It, that I'd have to read Battle For The Valley again (although of course it's written by Rick) but what are the timings of the rise of VOTV and the purchase of the The Valley (or the 'company' that owned it)?
In a pre-internet age I can't remember any other campaigners/organisers that put pressure on the board. Dennis was our leader but Rick was probably more important!

Mr Flemming you could find out how trusts can operate by getting involved, you never know you personally might have the answer, or gain understanding by listening and taking part i know its a cleeshay however its one of those situations where you get out what you put in, and needs some outside of the box thinking.
Trusts do operate sucessfully elsewhere in many different environments. I think it's a mistake to think of what a trust can't do today, but rather to think what it might be able to do tomorrow.
What i would like when people throw these things out is a bit of justification a back of the envelope balance sheet perhaps, and whether it is a guess or based on facts.
Another thing i would say is to compare our overheads and losses to the period before when we still had semedo and others on stupid salaries. This surely is no longer the case?
But as i said if you want to have an informed debate pls make an argument but put some justification and sources in it, then we can have an discussion about a sustainable model for charlton and which division this would likely mean we play in.0 -
No apology needed, but the Trust needs people like you who can understand the difficulties of running a football club from a business perspective.
We don't have an answer yet to what you are pondering, however many other Trusts have the same problem. Most other clubs are run by people who see no reason to involve 'fans' in the running of the club.
As I see it, Trusts bring together those fans who are interested in their club beyond what happens on the pitch. At the least they provide a two-way communication by which an enlightened Board can explain and help us understand the realities of the financial situation, and manage expectations of the broader fan base. At the most they can provide an umbrella under which reasonably well-off fans could assemble enough money to obtain a permanent equity stake in the club.
That's all pretty general, I readily concede. But I believe that if we get together we will put a lot more flesh on those bones.

Alwen and Norris submitted their planning application to return to the Valley. The Council, in a staged meeting which the then crumbling East European states would have been proud of, rejected it. CAFC was dead in the water.
However thanks to Rick and Steve's VOTV, a few of us had managed to at least co-ordinate our voice at that meeting. The next morning, still devastated by what had happened the previous night, I listened to GLR's report and heard the defiant voice of Roy King, previously unknown to me, saying "We will not let this stand. The Valley Party will contest all 62 seats in the forthcoming local elections". And you know what happened after that.
Of course, Rick and the rest of us didn't have the money to build the Valley. But without Rick there wouldn't have been a Valley Party, and so Roger Alwen and later Richard Murray and Martin Simons wouldn't have had a Valley to rebuild

After last night's enept performance, I am now duly worried about what is happening off field. If true, a big thank you for Airman's contribution over the years, VOTV, getting back to Valley, kids for a quid, valley express etc and much much more. Now, whilst I accept investment has been made to the academy, a new badge on the North, and offers for our players turned down, I would like to ask the current board where exactly do you see CAFC in five years time? Thank you from a life long fan.0

After last nights performance, it is quite obvious to the ordinary fan that we are short in midfield, if its obvious to us, then it certainbly is obvious to SCP. So, one assumes that he would have asked for money during the close-season to improve, which was obviously not forthcoming.
If our performances continue to slide, then this makes SCP's 'value' to the outside world much less and his position much less tenable.
Now, i dont know about you, but if external forces were making my own personal performances look poorer than than should be , then , regardless of how much love i would have for the job/club, then i would look elsewhere for employ.

It may not be right but this is current way of things. manure, man city, chelsea, liverpool, west ham, blackburn, newcastle, cardiff, potsmouth, qpr, been some obvious examples. Doesnt happen in other industry but football ownership is not logical.AFKABartram said:

I agree with you Clem and I'd already stated earlier in the thread how badly I felt about all of this. In the cold light of day I am trying to put a positive spin on what appears to be a very negative move.
