On the venue, my immediate reaction was to christen it the Bromley Sol, as sitting in the lounge it reminded me of a holiday welcome meeting with everyone waiting for the rep to arrive.

Thought it was a step up in venue and hope it is retained. It was clear that they were pleased to host the event, which I think goes a long way. Little things like putting crisps and nuts out all add to it.

On Henry's write up, SCP didn't say next question to have we signed anyone for next season, it was is he currently working on two separate shopping lists.

I supposed he needs to think about every scenario.

Something to do with standing at games/Jim Davidson/who our main rivals are/whether Charlton is in Kent?

Powell didn't react when the news of the Col U v Sheff Utd score was read out. Poker face or just not bovvered? Views differed.

What was his take on the Waggy/Green conundrum?

And how long did he stay after I left?

    Excellent report....enjoyed reading that....thank you
  • Many thanks to HI and others for the various summaries and tit-bits.

Two things stand out for me reading through the thread. One, Powell said he always reckoned Solly was better than Jenkinson (me, too). Secondly, he apparently admitted we're sometimes guilty of over-hoofing it to Kermogant (or words to that effect). Recognition is the first stage. The second is to do something about it, Chris!

We didn't finish chatting about Green v Waggy, there were a few people left that wanted pics etc so he finished them before we carried on and the conversation moved on to a few other bits. Was chatting until close to 11pm.
Waggy has shown him something with his cameo on Saturday and he is thinking long and hard about that. He did say that we haven't seen all of Green, it has taken him a while to settle in to the size of the club, the style of play and training as it was so far from the ideals at Dag & Red. As much as he's being coached to our style we've had to train some habits out.

Charlton will be invited to enter a team in the London Snr Cup ala the Kent Snr Cup as will all the London Clubs,

Club don't know about this yet but we have our sources at the London FA

I suspected Chrissy was worried about losing a 5th or 6th on Saturday. Sort of confirms he is a cautious manager as there was a slight chance of a point had he really risked it. Having said that, he is probably right as a win on Saturday will clearly demonstrate.

At the risk of sounding negative at half time I would have taken a 4-0 as it looked like it was only going to get worse. To get two goals and be the more likely to score in the latter stages of the game was much, much more than we could have, realistically, have hoped for after that first 45 minutes. Also the goal difference may yet still be important, and those two goals would have been wiped out if we'd conceded another one and fallen to pieces again.

Chris Powell's mentor Sir Alan Cautiously used to do the same - "damage limitation", he called it.

So no surprises Powell didn't 'go for it' in the 2nd half v Notts C.

I had already told him the 1-1 score line and that Sheff Utd were at that time down to 10 men (this was during the interval) with about 5 or 10 minutes left to play.....so he already knew the score. Hence his apparent lack of emotion...when I told him he 'did' give a smile and commented. "Mmmmmm that's good" type comment ....can't remember exactly what he said, but he was clearly very pleased.

Thanks for the reports everyone that went.

Not sure on the Solly/Jenkinson bit, didn't Jenkinson start games ahead of him when Powell came in? Although I can't remember when Solly was fit after his injury.

Jeff Vetere - Knows a lot about European and prem players but not league 1 and 2 players where we were shopping so not needed.

Phil Chapple is Powell's chief scout and Powell values him and his views.

Repeated his views on reserve league. Would like to see a London league but current set up is poor and/or non-existant. Finance is a major problem for most clubs. Even Spurs have dropped out of the Premier Reserve league. Agrees that it would be beneficial to have more competitive games to keep playes sharp ie Evina having to come on at an hour's notice so not as sharp as could have been.

Said after meeting that 7 subs could return next season. Kavanagh mentioned a U21 development league with 3 overage players was a possibility at meeting last week
They knew about Vetere before they hired him so why bother?

A mistake was made and hands have been held up by one and all.
All concerned soon realised that it wasn't going to work out and parted on amicable terms it would seem....so not much harm done and he's still a friend of Charlton. Maybe he can be of more help in the future if we go onto bigger and better things at a higher level where his expertese and connections would be of more use.

As far as I can recall CP switched Jenkinson to left-back and brought in Solly at right-back when the latter returned to the first team. I don't recall Jenkinson being selected in favour of Solly, but then the latter was injured for most of the season barring a few games at the start and end so the question most likely never arose.
