Will we make the playoffs?

  • Injuries will make or break any sort of decent season. And it won't have to be many. The best 11 have found some sort of mojo, but take one or two of them out and I think we'll struggle.
Changes in playing personnel and formation don't seem to serve this group well.
  • During the long train journey home (longer than necessary) I was predicting the results vs opponents for the run in with my son.
Against all my years and heartbreaks, I went with it and was totally drawn in by his youthful optimism!
We have very winnable games vs Exeter (h), Crawley (a), Wigan (h), Peterborough (a), Lincoln (h), Cambridge (a), Northampton (h) & Burton (h). 5 at home and 3 away (all vs the current bottom 5).
That’s a possible 74 points excluding games vs Orient, Barnsley, Stockport, Huddersfield, Wycombe & Wrexham.
Drop a couple from the “winnable” games and nick a couple from those around us and it’s still somewhere around 74 points!

Avoid key injuries and I think we make it!!
Brining it back to the near future, we must beat Exeter!! 7 points from Orient, Barnsley & Stockport would be dreamland! Exciting times!
5 points from those three wouldn't be a disaster either. Beat Barnsley, draw the other two.
  • If we are still in touching distance after our tough run of games then we should do it, our last month or so we have a fairly decent run in.
  • Orient is a big game now.
Before that game on March 1st, take a look at the fixtures of both sides…

    Charlton: Exeter (H)
Leyton Orient: Wrexham (A), Bolton (A), Birmingham (A)
    Ideally Wrexham & B’ham wins & Bolton a draw.

I also only see a point against Stockport and I have a funny feeling they’ll nick 2nd as well.

    Hopefully Charlton win too!

Orient are on a terrific run atm and I can see them getting a play-off spot.
  • If Jones still sees Anderson as AM then no

  • It's almost a certainty that we will finish 7th, probably on goal difference alone, it's the Charlton way... :/
  • Poor results for us tonight with Huddersfield and Orient winning tough away games

Only positive is that Wrexham looked pretty poor, 8 points behind them isn’t uncatchable

I think we have become so used to battling in the bottom half of the table in recent years we forget that teams are in the top 6 because they win more games than they lose. Granted results tonight aren't helpful but the playoffs suddenly aren't over because a few results have gone against us since the weekend. Wrexham losing may actually benefit us in the long run especially if we still back ourselves to finish up above Orient.

This is a good point. When we won the league we had Wednesday fans predicting our demise for most of the season. Now we’re doing the same with Stockport, Wycombe, Wrexham etc. We will really have to go some to make it, which we might, but I think it will go to the last day.
Then there’s the small matter of actually winning them….

think we need to win 9 from 15 and 1 of those has to come against Leyton orient,

below are fixtures with teams current league position.

    Exeter H 17th
    Orient A 6th
    Barnsley H 11th
    Stockport A 4th
    Crawley A 22nd
    Wigan H 16th
    Pboro A 20th
    Hudds H 5th
    Mansfield A 15th
    Lincoln H 10th
    Cambridge A 24th
    Northampton H 19th
    Wycombe A 2nd
    Wrexham A 3rd
    Burton H 21st

looking at that its pretty bleak as not only do we play 4 of the top 6 currently but also a few down the bottom that are fighting for survival, as much as people say brum a was a free hit i dont agree should be trying to win every league game.

if i had to pick 9 wins out of that i would go

    exeter h
    barnsley h
    crawley a
    wigan h
    pboro a
    hudds h
    cambridge a
    northampton h
    burton h

If we have 15 games left then we must play roughly 2/3 of the teams in the division, so playing 4 of the top 6 is about par for the course.

I don’t think the run in looks too terrible, and inf we want to get to and win the playoffs then it’s a reasonable expectation that we have to beat these sorts of teams. The general standard of the league is poorer this season than other times we’ve been in it - this is the time to do it.

Most of the 'top' teams, still have top teams to play, we have fewer than some.
  • Must beat Exeter and in honesty can’t lose to Orient.

  • I thought at the start of the season that we would finish 8th or 9th. I have seen nothing to change my mind.
  • We'd need to beat them in the playoffs anyway.

    Not necessarily
  • That freakish year where Plymouth missed out on top six with 80 points - this is what the table looked like at relatively the same point in the season as we are at now.

  • And here’s last season where Barnsley finished 6th on 76pts & Lincoln 7th on 74pts.

  • I am confident that we will
  • If we continue to play as we have since that Crawley game then we should, but any relapses for multiple games will make that unlikely to impossible once again.

Still saying 75 is the target but it may end up being closer to 77 or 78.

That means finding 27 or 28 points from the last 15 games. We have 28 points from our previous 14 games going back to Crawley.

Seven home games & eight away games left.

Home form will be critical - to make our path reasonable, we have to win at least five of those seven (65pts) and it could come down to Burton at home on 3rd May. We can do this, we have won six home games in a row since Christmas and shouldn’t be afraid of anyone.

That leaves 12 or 13 points to find from eight away games: either four wins or three wins and three draws.

That we still have to play 5 of the top 6 teams should be viewed positively. No need to rely on others and no excuses if we don’t make the playoffs.
We know what we need to do. It’s in our hands.

Exactly how I see it. It's a positive for me that we're playing those around us. If we weren't playing them, we'd be relying on them to fail or lower teams to do us a favour. As it is, this is entirely in our own hands. Positive results against the current top 6 (minus Birmingham of course) and we make the playoffs no problem. If we don't, it'll totally be on us and we will have zero excuses.
