I usually stick up for RonnieMoore when he's getting pelters from others but giving TC a 6 is an absolute joke
Yeah I'm with you on that, he's obviously been hitting the Sherry over the holiday season, or he's simply losing his mind.
Ronnie never rated CBT, so I can see why he doesn’t rate TC who hasn’t yet developed the good end product CBT had last season.
I wasn't a fan of CBT but I have to say, on his day he was unplayable, it always seemed to me that he didn't want to do the other work that a team needed.
somewhat nice to come away from a game gutted at not taking all 3pts, after the first half of the season we've had!
So frustrating that almost every shot on target goes straight to the keeper - didnt even really make him work. We play so much better having width to out performance, but its clear that Small and TC think theyre better than they are - so wasteful and nonchalant when attacking, and rather than beating their man they both prefer to check back or try a few fancy step overs- just get it in the box if youre not going to drive!!!
Defence looks solid, albeit gilesphey scares me everytime hes on the ball - our only real weak link there. Midfield solid too but with no magic or class to it.
Should really have won, but it keeps reading in touching distance... really need to start picking up points, especially the 6 pointers
That’s very inaccurate about Small. His fault is composure in front of goal.
I wasn't there & didnt watch it on TV so no idea what foot these chances fell to him......
But remember he is a left footed defender playing on the right. If chances fall to him on his "wrong" foot then it's hard to criticise him. Same with regards to crossing.
The chances he missed were when he cut in on his left foot but blazed over or wide. One he wriggled through and only needed to calmly pass it into the net but went for the Hollywood finish. Shame cause his approach play was good.
Should have won that the better team lack of finishing quality or that extra class that's letting us down in these types of games it's on the owners....
If only we had kept last season's top goal scorer.
Btw......its not the defence that let us down today. Remember.......clean sheets win titles.
Playing much better than a month ago. We look a decent side. Feel TC end product really holds him back, does the hard stuff sometimes but the final ball is the let down
Only teams to have lost fewer games than us are the top four: Birmingham, Wycombe, Wrexham and Huddersfield. We now have the solid platform that we desperately needed.
Where we have suffered is from a few annoying draws against Stockport, Barnsley, Mansfield, Reading… All of whom have top six ambitions themselves.
Turn two or three of those into wins and we wouldn’t be just outside looking in, playing catch up.
Agree with you re drawn matches but only Lincoln, Blackpool and Northampton have drawn more than us.
Its been our downfall the last few seasons drawn too many matches to challenge for play off spot.
Thierry Small is such an interesting player. He’s got bags of pace and ability, but is also prone to miscontrolling simple balls - he either failed to control a pass to him or had a heavy touch when dribbling on numerous occasions. He also loses any composure when he sees the opportunity to shoot. If he can iron these flaws out he’ll be a fantastic player.
(I put this in the match thread, but it’s closed now)
One good thing, he never hid from start to finish. Can you hear me Luke, Mr Absence, Berry
Decent performance in spells, but Reading had a couple of spells of their own and 3 huge chances.
If Thierry Small had an end product there is no doubt he'd be playing at a much higher level.
I am bored of saying it, but how bad does Gillesphey have to be before he is dropped? He was absolutely woeful today and added being out muscled to his ever growing list of deficiencies.
Going to moan about the bench as well. It's still ridiculously unbalanced. I don't see the need for 3 strikers and if Anderson is there, why do we need Campbell as well?
Every time I have seen Whing play for Reading I have been impressed - would love to get him in. Knibbs was less effective than he has been against us in the past. I like Sam Smith as well, clever footballer and given his size he leads the line really well.
No doubt things have improved and there is a level of resilience there, but the concern for me is what happens if we loose Jones again? He leads the defensive line so we'll and we don't have a replacement for that.
Talking out of your proverbial about Gillesphey as most. No coincidence that we've been a better defensive unit with Jones next to him. A misplaced pass doesn't mark someone down always but as usual Charlton fans need a scapegoat e.g Fox/Purrington/Morgan. Let's analyse today we didn't concede of which Gillesphey wad part of our defense. How many goals did we score .......nil ! Don't see you berating others.
Gillesphey played well and has done so recently.
Two misplaced passes that created danger and also gave away an unnecessary corner all in the first ten. After that he was good. Jones and Mitchell did nothing similar.
Two points dropped. We really need to win games like these if we are serious about making the play-offs. At least we are a better watch now though
We wont make the play offs.
Haven't got the creativity nor the strike force.
Will finish around 10th.
Alfie would have scored today
Bit like downing a bottle of whisky grabbing a gun and and trying to shoot your self in the foot this season wonder who's to blame,no doubt will get the didn't want to play for us brigade come out on that one, think he had a contract still though and would be good off the bench atleast trying to force his last good move maybe who knows.
I usually stick up for RonnieMoore when he's getting pelters from others but giving TC a 6 is an absolute joke
What would you have done/did score TC then, his running was excellent but his passing and shooting were terrible, if he had squared the ball to Leaburn in the first half we would have scored
Need 41 from the remaining 23 to get to the 75 mark that’s usually needed for top six.
Brum, Wycombe, Wrexham & Stockport all away from home will be a tough ask
On the other end though, that means there’s plenty of poor teams still to come to the Valley where picking off three points consistently will be critical.
We can do it. 12 points from the last six with only two goals conceded and four clean sheets so recent form is tracking the right way.
Win all our remaining home games and pick up a point at every away equals 79 points.
It’s not going to happen.
Blame first half of season for our downfall .
Blimey. Sack the rest of the season off then. See you in August!
- Lloyd Jones was excellent; - I really like what Small is doing despite the frustrations and lack of composure at moments. We have had nobody all season playing with any kind of attacking aggression, we never shoot, never cross, nobody is trying to make anything happen. Small wants to take people on, he wants to get a cross in wants to shoot, he is producing things / making things happen... we BADLY need that so I'd much rather take the odd wayward shot; - thought at 65 mins a draw was a fair result, they missed a couple of huge chances, but we banged on the door last 25 and should really have won with the moments we had but didn't quite get the luck / lacked the composure in particular TC and obviously Small in on goal; - found it particularly frustrating a couple of the late decisions from Mitchell and Coventry to take hopeful 1 in 50 shot / volley from distance respectively when we had them pinned back on the ropes in their box, take a touch and keep them defending.
Overall a much improved performance Vs a lot of what we've seen all season, but equally don't think they had the look of a side that will go on a 7 game winning run which is what we need. We also needed simply to win today, the gap looks much too much to ask now and we basically need title form now for the rest of the season i.e. 2 points per game. Which will not happen.
This morning I was telling myself, no way are we good enough to win four on the bounce, when two of the four are against teams in the top 6, but we came mighty close and deserved to win. Hard to fault anyone, we forget how young Small and TC still are, with the right coaching both will improve their end product and be Champ- level players.
I mainly have the hump with the fact that due to this shoddy Sky deal I have no idea whether TC was off or not. Last season they’d have had the playbacks in the post match analysis. We’d also know if Mbengue should have had a red for his tackle on Edwards, as Clare should have done. And we’d have a series of clips showing that the ref thought he was reffing an ice-hockey game.
But anyway, compared to where we were a month ago, night and day, so now we have to see what we can do in the window. As Brownie says, why not try for a couple of loans of good FAPL youngsters with pace? All of a sudden we look like a good place to send such a player.
Totally agree, by far and away his best post match interview! I'm glad things are turning round for him. Yes he's made mistakes, yes he's been stubborn, but he's always said we're a good team we just need to get some players back and 'click'. Well to be fair to him we have (got players back) and we're 'clicking'. 4 clean sheets in 6, 10 points from 12, I can't see how we can moan and be negative to be honest. We're undefeated in 6, playing some decent stuff and still have Ramsey to come back and, potentially, 1 or 2 new additions. We have to hope this new found playing style and confidence can be maintained.

I gave him an 8. Superb strength on the ball, marked by 2-3 defenders and came away with the ball on most occasions, our best outlet alongside Small, put dangerous crosses into the box, pressed well, unlucky with the disallowed goal. Failing to square it for Leaburn is honestly the only thing I can mark him down for. Can't remember any terrible passing to be honest.
I enjoyed that today. We were SO much better than we have been. Gillesphey weak link. Keeper's distribution is poor. But we worked damn hard.
Jones (Lloyd) brilliant. TC worked tirelessly. Leaburn caused them problems. Small needs a little more composure
Left sided centre half Attacking midfielder Goalkeeper (Reading's preferably)
PLEASE
Odd view. Their keeper spilled several times, kicked the ball out several more and all our shots were straight at him. Not sure how you then want him in over AMB who made the one decent save that was needed out of him all game 🤷🏻♂️😏
Wasn’t able to watch today so have no opinion of my own but just wondering how Gillesphey is managing to score anything between 4 and 8 on the players marks (and not from any of our notorious WUMS!). I sometimes wonder if we all watch the same game.
Because, like so many before him, he has become a Charlton Life whipping boy, his marks and comments don't reflect how he's played, but people getting on the bandwagon slagging him off. In my opinion his overall performance has improved consistently over the last few games, and is now putting in solid performances in a defence that is working well as a unit. He still plays too many hopeful diagonal passes, but today he laid it off into midfield as well. He is liable to the odd scary moment, but then he is a league one defender.

Who was it who got bullied by Smith for their one big chance and ended up on the floor?
First disgraceful Referee who wanted to kick off before we had finished paying our respects. Then his performance went down hill from there.
Entertaining game, a little more composure in front of goal and we would have got the win. Playing With a bit more fluency and hope we can push on. Good to see NJ reconnect with the fans.

I don't think we can blame the ref for the shambles of the remembrance. Whoever planned that within the club got it totally wrong having Wright's piece before the lost of names.

First half he gave the ball away twice in dangerous areas. He also stopped watching a long ball which ended up bouncing off his giant head and going out for a corner. Got bullied for Smith’s chance second half as well - something he allows to happen far too often. The bloke isn’t good enough, but fortunately we have Jones, Edwards and Mitchell playing with him.

He's okay at this level but lacks the composure of Jones. L1 is probably his ceiling.
