POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Reading: Saturday 4th January 2025: KO 15:00

Reading visited the Valley this afternoon having won their last three. Despite all of their long-existing ownership challenges, their manager having walked away, and young side they’ve made a great start to the season, challenging in the playoff places. Charlton have also won their last three and were looking to continue the momentum. Jones elected to go with the same starting eleven that’s turned things around of late and beleaguered striker Chuks Aneke was named in the squad for the first time in an ice November’s injury.

Reading got off to a good start and went on to make things difficult for Charlton in the first half. They had opportunities, more than one guilt edge, to go into the break one, two, or three goals to the good. But Charlton were resolute and, on the odd occasion, fashioned their own chances, mostly through Thierry Small on the right and Tyreece Campbell on the left. The half ended goalless.

Reading began the second half where they left off. Conversely, Charlton didn’t get started until after sixty minutes and from that point on they knocked and knocked on the door but were unable to find the breakthrough goal. Campbell, Docherty, and Small all got into good positions and tested the Reading keeper, but the best chance fell to Miles Leaburn who was unable to break the deadlock. The Reading keeper at times lived a charmed life and it seemed that there just wouldn’t be anything to separate the two sides today.

Charlton 0 Reading 0

  • Gutting not to win
  • 1-0, 2-0 would not have been unjust.

Was at the game but couldn’t tell if TC goal was offside, was it?! Looked like it come off a reading player last
Very close. It flicked off Leaburn and then their man. Looking forward to seeing it on the highlights.
  • I feel robbed. That has to be our best performance for no goals. I hope that ref got the offside correct or it will be salt in the wound. TC the best player on the pitch for us.

I thought it came off a Reading player

Watched on tv and it flicked off leaburn and he looked offside to me.
  • We also could have scored in the first half. 0-0 or 1-1 would have been fair. Could never have been 0-3.
Second half we battered them. How we haven’t got the three points I have no idea. Well, poor finishing I guess, but we’re now playing much better, and yet we’re now 7 points from 6th, albeit with a game in hand. Let’s hope they keep their heads up.

Looked well offside to me on the telly.

I do think it was likely off, marginally. He was well ahead of the centre backs but there was a full back close to playing him on.

There man of the match must be the keeper.

  • Really good game of football, Reading came out and tried to get their noses in front, then we dominated, same pattern in the second half. Could have won it but both keepers kept their sides in it. I suppose you could consider it points dropped but the performance was very good.

  • Good game. Fair result, just. They had midfield for the first hour. Then it was all us. Small wasted far too many good opportunities, and TCs finishing is poor, though he took the disallowed goal well. Gillesphey had a nightmare first ten minutes but was excellent after and Jones was immense. On to the next one... COYA
  • Way more chances than them, not conceded … all good to see but we do need to make more of our chances.
  • 23 games played and 34 points attained.

Need 41 from the remaining 23 to get to the 75 mark that’s usually needed for top six.
Brum, Wycombe, Wrexham & Stockport all away from home will be a tough ask
