  • Essex 96/4 after 11.2. Even Kent can’t mess this up surely
  • Apparently there has only been 2 centuries in this years T20 Blast.

    Muyeye 100
    DBD 100

  • Pleased for Parkinson. Never understood why we insisted on going into games with six seamers and no spinner. There are days when he will go for some but he is a wicket taker.
Mind you, it helps that Essex were worse than poo.
  • Just home from a lovely evening out with the Wadhurst Ladies.

What a great surprise to see the result !

    Well done, lads !

He’s bowled a lot of rubbish this season .  Delighted he didn’t today

Muyeye has 57 more runs than any other player in the whole competition. One really positive decision by the management was to say that even when Crawley was around for the first 4 games, DBD and Muyeye would open regardless. That must have been a confidence boost to Muyeye because it wouldn't have happened in years gone by.

Interestingly, Crawley was very successful batting at 3 whereas Roy, at Surrey, stated well in that position but has been out cheaply in 4 of his last 5 innings. There again, he has to usurp that free scoring, elegant, run machine otherwise known as Dom Sibley (28.12 @ 123.62 as opposed to his opening partner, Jacks, who averages 46.75 @ 178.09).

He hasn't in every game. Only Evison and Klaassen have a better economy rate and Rogers is top wicket taker with just one more wicket and he's played two more games. As I said, there will be days when he doesn't land it right but there is absolutely no point of difference in playing six seamers and opposition batters can just set themselves for 20 overs.

Surrey have done similar to what you have said with Muyeye, we've tried to give everyone set roles this year. Given how disrupted we are by England call ups and temporary overseas players  in previous years everyone has moved around and batted and bowled at different times and done different roles. This year Sam Curran as captain has been clear everyone has a role and will stick to it. Its been tough planning but seems to be working.

We knew that Pope and Smith would be available for the first few and then Jacks would come back as they go. So we opened with Pope even though he's better down the order so that Jacks slots straight in when he returns. They were meant to be partnered at the top of the order by Dan Lawrence but injury has ruled him out of proceedings. Instead of shifting things around we've subbed Sibley in as a direct replacement. Now I'm no fan of Sibley in T20 (he basically has one shot - how teams haven't worked that out I have no idea!) But if youre gonna play him you have to open with him as he takes a while to get going therefore you can't have him coming in down the order.

For a one off game you'd do things differently but for a competition keeping defined roles will help.
  • Just watched the highlights on You Tube  & noted that Jayden was fielding.

    Wondering who was missing.

Canters why is Evans keeping? Have you not got a young keeper behind Smith and Pope or is it more about keeping the balance of the side right?

Was very impressed with young Ollie Sykes against Sussex, few players have done what he did to James Coles this season.

Fanny. I was half expecting Essex to complain about that. He replaced his Uncle Joe who got injured while batting against Surrey and missed the next two games. Joe was fit enough to bat last night and really made a valuable contribution (39 off 18). But he didn’t re-appear when The Spitfires went out to field, and sub Jaydn fielded superbly with two top catches and some fine work in the deep. Every little helps. 😉

Not a bad bit of business for the Denly dynasty !

Smith and Pope are our keepers in this format. Both are with England. Foakes no longer plays t20. Last year we used Josh Blake in a few T20s and I think even 1 champ game. But whole he's a "good character" and they like having him around the place he's not really thought of as good enough and only really there for when we lose 20 players to the hundred. We've also used Burns in that role but he is not much more of a keeper than Evans and is really not great with the bat in t20. Evans is batting down the order anyway and has kept enough before to do it competently and so means we don't have the change the balance of the side to accommodate Blake or Burns. He's a million miles the better t20 batsman than both.

Sykes certainly has a big future. I'd be getting him up the order where I can
  • If Sibley can play T20, surely Foakes can!

  • Lancs have put us in to bat

Interesting that Jaydn keeps his uncle out of the side and has been promoted to open. Here's a question - when was the last time that Kent had two left handers opening the batting?
  • A slight age difference between Denly and Jimmy Anderson!
  • A slight age difference between Denly and Jimmy Anderson!
Indeed. Anderson had been playing for England for three years at the time that Jaydn was born.
