Does the same training pitch count?

Something I don't think that's been mentioned yet was how impressed I was with Mitchell, specifically his pace,  really caught me off guard considering his size. 2nd half his man got in behind and he caught him to the point where they ended up in a tussle and they lost the ball very impressed.
I remember that, and what I was impressed with was the way that he stayed on his feet and didn't dive in. Proper defender.
  • May is like rocking horse shit, a natural goalscorer regardless of style or tactics. He’d score goals wherever he is, but he’s not with us, so we move on, with maximum points.
Well I've seen Alfie May so I know that he exists, please let me know where you have seen rocking horse shit & how it compares with Alfie May.
  • The drink service in the north stand lower was even more garbage than usual at half time. We also did not have the game on the TVs. Same old crap. Great win mind
  • Horse shit rocks in my greenhouse.
    That from trap 3 too.

Early days but 3 goals conceded by Birmingham in two league fixtures 🤷‍♂️

Quoted the wrong post, meant to quote this one

Lets see how this plays out at Birmingham.

Also lets not forget if Holden hadn't pushed & pushed for his signing we would have just kicked off in Division Four. ”

Obviously we are all grateful for Alfie’s contribution to keeping us out of division four last season.

A clean sheet win, what else can you ask for?
To have scored 2 more then we'd be top.

It would just be our luck to finish 3rd, same number of points as 2nd but miss out on GD. Or worse, by goals scored.
You and your brother are something else. Two back to back clean sheet wins, with team bursting with energy and passion.

But let’s focus on not being top after two games and some public shitting fetish.

    (apparently not) Unique.

They've got almost an entirely new team still getting used to each other. Once they sort the defence out there will be no stopping them as with the attacking players they've signed they're going to score 2-3 most weeks.

I'm quite confident they'll go close to both 100 points and 100 goals.

    A few random thoughts.

Few teams if any are going to out-muscle us this year. And defensively we look much more secure.

Early days yet but I was very impressed with Mannion today. Don't think signing a new keeper is anywhere near as vital as some think.

Going to reserve judgment on Ahadme until he plays with a different partner to Campbell. Can only hope there is more to his game than we can currently see.

Just hope that injuries don't de-rail our promotion push. Horrible feeling we won't see Edwards for some time. And, after seeing the replay, that was a clear red for Clare.

And finally won't be popular with some but I was thinking if we could play Alfie May in front of today's keeper, defence and midfield that would be a team that is comfortable top 6. But I know move on, move on .....
    Will never understand selling him
Might be wrong but my guess is he didn't fit the profile Jones wants. May's work rate and fitness weren't the issue as they're strengths of his, but as a striker he neither has the physicality to hold up the ball, the height to win headers or the pace to run at players with the ball. He's quick enough to run in behind but his pace isn't exceptional compared to someone like CBT when he was here.
Obviously he didn't fit the profile that Jones wanted & you have listed his supposed weaknesses. However despite these weaknesses he was not only our leading goalscorer last season he was the leading scorer in the whole of the division. He had also scored 20+ goals in a struggling team in the previous 2 years. It's very likely that Jones is the only manager in the division that wouldn't love to have a prolific striker in his team. One who's work rate & fitness would have fitted into Jones requirement for a high(ish) press. We've brought in a lump who's supposed to be a focal point to win the headers & has the physicality to hold the ball up but there's no way that he's going to score the goals to fire us to promotion. Why would Alfie need the pace of a CBT when he has a strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time ? OK so Alfie has gone, where do we replace his goals ? A 33 year old already struggling for fitness or a young winger suddenly transformed into a so called striker. Absolute madness, we had the best striker in the division & our manager couldn't fit him into a team that is clearly missing a goal scorer.
I wasn’t defending the decision but let’s see where we end up. If we keep getting clean sheets we won’t miss May as much as some predicted.

He might have scored a few had he stayed but we might have also conceded more, I don’t think it’s as simple as we’d have definitely been better with May in the team.

On your last point, if Jones is backed with a few more signings I don’t think we’ll see a striker come in other than Dixon as a prospect rather than a starter.

    Bloody Birmingham and May...🤷‍♂️
  • Partly understand May being discussed in a post-match thread when we lose, but not when we win.

Let's just be happy that our current squad of players have been 100% successful in the league so far.

I think we needed to sort out the defence and Jones has done that and some.  The midfield won their battles and what I felt we were missing was a striker who puts himself about, until Aneke came on. Then it all seemed to work and you could see the full picture. Leaburn can potentially do that job but I'm not sure about Ahadme. He is tidy but not sure he is a handful, although he missed a bit of pre-season so may not yet be up to speed.

I thought Small grew into the game and we saw last season's player by the end. His crossing needs fine tuning but he showed last season this is not an area of weakness. A bit of luck seeing as Edwards looks like he might be out for a while. Ramsey is growing every game and Iooks like a bit of a find. Coventry competes but is also assured on the ball. Mannion gives me confidence and our defence looks a nightmare to play against. You can see how this team may develop further.

Set pieces still need work but I think we have more attributes to make them work  this season. We do need to improve in this area. Lastly, that ref was I suspect somebody who has never played the game to any sort of competetive level. They stand out like a sore thumb.

Isn't it time we had a 'we would be so much better if we kept Alfie May' thread. There are  obviously posters on here whose nose is firmly out of joint with our 100% record even after just two league games. Halfway through the game today we had the same culprits declaring we would be winning if Alfie May was still playing. It is starting to sound like you are desperate for the team to fail merely so you can come on here and declare 'I told you so'. Get over it and move on.
No. I don't think that is fair. Getting rid of the most prolific striker in the league deserves questioning. Hopefully we will be fine.

Well this is no better than last season….no threat up front whatsoever….selling May a big mistake
Just one of the many examples. Correct me if I'm wrong. Alfie May signed a two year contract, so was in his last season with us ? Alfie May's wife and kids live in the North of England so Alfie May would never have re-signed for Charlton as quite rightly he wanted to be reunited with his family ? Charlton would never have got money for Alfie as he would have walked away. Now have a look at the same scenario with Thierry Small, last year of his contract not going to re-sign so not committed to the club in the long term. The manager and owners are reportedly seeing this as a long term project, that's according to posters who spoke with them yesterday, a player in the last year of his deal would not be seen as long term and if the club can sell and replace, it has to do it for the benefit of the club. One other thing, Alfie May's form here last year took a dip and a lot of people blamed the manager, did anyone think that Alfie's domestic situation may have played a part.
