Chunes said:Great thing about keeping clean sheets, you can't lose and you only have to score one to win!
Hope the focus is on obtaining that magical 40-50% clean sheet number throughout the season. Do that and we'll be right up there.
A long way to go but on first showing, makes such a difference to have aggressive defenders rather than passive ones. I hope this is the season that highlights just how ineffective some of our past ones have been.
Agree we still need a little more quality, and I'm really yet to see a justification for Ahadme's £1 mil price tag, although not to say he's been bad.
Excellent start, up the Addicks0 -
Classic 1-0 away win, clean sheet and all.
Three points takes the pressure off the Leyton Orient game.
None of the players were in any way crap, and the whole thing was managed excellently by Nathan Jones.
I don't care much about the aesthetics of the game, the three lovely points are enough to be getting on with.
We're still on course for the 138 points8 -

Similar happened with Coventry. Rumoured £1m fee. Cawley confirmed we got him on a free with a big sell on clause %.2 -

But he did nothing really as a wing back leaving Campbell completely unsupported on the left side of the attack.
We got a good result today without creating any real chances after the Docherty one at the start.
Slightly alarming to see NJ say that 1-0 is the best result in football. I would prefer 3-0 myself, or even 3-1.
But it looks like a season of attrition ahead.4 -
I felt we were a lot better than the smash and grab some people have made it out to be, but everyone sees the game differently.
Josh Edwards looks a serious player!!9 -
Good win. Wigan were no slouches but had no real firepower. A win, a clean sheet, away from home against a good team. What’s not to like!1

Just watched the Wigan managers post match interview. He predicts we'll finish in the top 2! Hope he's right lol. Great defensive performance and day, that's how you win away in this league. Delighted.10

Job done, on to the next. 👍🏻1

So... where do we find N Jones post match interviews now there is no Charlton TV? And when?0

Ref pulled up every little niggle and was whistle happy...except for our throw ins, a pretty large percentage of which would have been blown up for in a kids Sunday morning match.1

What a good start to the season, we have a defence now3

I've been hoping for a defensive performance like that for years it feels like
We gave them a lot to think about with our strength and physicality which has been desperately missing along with decisiveness and I am delighted to report that was on show too. Ramsay showed he is a modern day full back in all senses today and set himself a high bar no better shown than sprinting back and making a tackle he had to get right and doing it beautifully, saving a goal or at least a very good chance for them.
Wigan have a good and mainly settled squad with a decent manager, it was a terrible game as a spectacle especially for a neutral but a perfect away performance and a huge 3 points. There were some insane results across the whole EFL today with Swanseas failure to score screwing up my BTTS six fold before it got going then every other game coming in.

Only one 0-1 away win across the whole EFL today…24

Thought that was one of the best defensive displays I’ve seen from a Charlton team in many years. The team was disciplined and everyone knew their job.Very encouraging.8

Dad said post match, sound a bit like a SCP result. 1-0 to the Londoners! Not always pretty but if we build a fortress at the back, that's all we'll need.
My memories still hark back to last seasons early forays with an unconvincing 1-0 against Orient folllowed by dross.
Much better will be needed, because as we get fitter, sharper and better, so will the other teams.
Happy? Abso-bloody-lutely!
Well done NJ, the team, coaches, and the fans, who could be heard singing all game.3 -
Last year people would have bitten your hand off for a clean sheet and an away win to Wigan.
This year because we done it ugly people are complaining and worrying about what we’ve got, it’s how Jones will play the entire season - hard fought scrappy games which won’t always be pretty and coming away with points.
i would much prefer that than conceding 2/3 every game or having to come from behind every game.
Rome wasn’t built in a day!22 -
I thought Wigan were a proper side and we limited them which is positive as fuck. Great win.16

We were NEVER going to get a free flowing performance on the first game of the season away at Wigan, we’ve won, we’ve kept a clean sheet, we’re obviously not completely up to speed yet so I just can’t understand negativity28

I’d take that performance every week if it gets us out of this crappy league. Wasn’t pretty, we didn’t create much, but we scored and we won. Defensively very sound, Edwards was excellent, Ramsay too, three centre halves solid. Would like us to sign someone more creative in midfield and not sure TC is the answer up front but to be fair he did have a shot on target and him and Ahadme were feeding off scraps. First game, encouraging signs, onwards and upwards.6

Just back 3.75 hrs Wigan to W Sussex - take that any day of the week and after an opening day away win, felt like a couple of hours.
Nathan and the team can all feel very proud of themselves tonight, as can the 800+ fans who made the journey and made themselves heard.
Lloyd Jones was pretty faultless all game, while Josh Edwards put in one of the most body on the line performances I’ve seen in CAFC shirt in a long time. Take nothing away from the likes of Dobbo in recent past etc, but this warrior will literally stick his head in the way of a boot on the ground to ensure that ball does not reach the goal. An amazing debut, but feel for Small, who I love seeing play for us too.
On the right side, Kayne’s tackle was nothing short of sublime while the entire team worked their socks off.Josh Edwards was my MOM and I cannot wait for Tuesday night under the lights!18 -
Perfect start to the season. Had a good feeling for 3 points before game but didn't expect the clean sheet.Only one game in, but the new defence this season looks like they won't roll over and concede as easily as last season.1
-
Can't help feeling, if Edwards is not getting forward, he should be LCB in front of Gilly, freeing up some space perhaps for a Prem loanee.4

So, was it as mildly great as it sounds..?0

Had time to reflect on yesterday's win! How great it feels to wake up on a Sunday morning knowing that Charlton have won!
Yes, it wasn't the prettiest of games, yes, we are still work in progress, and yes, we didn't look great up front, BUT, we won, we kept a clean sheet, Gas, especially, run his legs off closing down etc and Edwards, Ramsay, Doc and L. Jones looked good.
If we win more away games 1-0, albeit ugly, who's going to complain? We need to get out of this League, if for no other reason than to leave behind bloody awful officiating!!
Happy Sunday everyone!14 -
