That was an excellent performance in a very tight game, either side could have won it but we looked more certain at the back with Jones and Mitchell outstanding. The last ditch header away by Edwards and the saving tackle by Ramsey were highlights but the two centre backs won everything in the air. Midfield worked hard but didn't seem to want to push on, maybe because of Campbell not being able to find space.
I don't think Wigan could have won it. On the very rare occasion they got a sight of goal there was a defender there to deal with it. Aside from a deflected shot wide we dealt with everything before they even got the shot away. Wigan were tidy and had a lot of the ball but that back 5 weren't letting them near it today
You are forgetting Ramsey's saving tackle and Edwards saving diving header. Both sides created little, Jones finish is great but it comes from a mistake by there defender in misjudging the bounce, we didn't make that sort of mistake and probably deserved to win it on that stat alone.

Far from an ‘ugly performance’ albeit very assured and tight defectively - not much magic going forward however!

Not sure who’s more frustrating - Winger Tyreece Campbell or Striker Tyreece Campbell, just didn’t seem to get much today and felt for Ahadme who looks like he needs a more solid and ‘blue ass fly’ strike Partner - Kanu or Leaburn could work well!

    Edward : what a player!
Campbell deserves a run of games at centre forward. Even on a slight off day his extra pace gave all our players a bit more space and time.
  • Pretty tight game with not a lot of attacking quality on show by either team but they made a costly mistake and we didnt. Dont think Wigan were much to talk about at all but Ramsay put in an incredible tackle to keep it level then once we finally made some subs the tide shifted a bit and they made an error.

Jones seems to have set us up to be hard to beat primarily which im happy with after years of soft defending and even softer goals but we'll need more creativity in the final third if we wanna push for promotion.

A solid but not inspiring win. Up the Addicks.

That game had NJ written all over it. Away from home set up to keep it tight, don’t give the opposition easy chances. A great 3 points against a team that will be up there at the end of the season imo. If we can put in performances like that every week we won’t lose many games this season

We're not going to be rampaging through the league handing out 3 or 4 goal drubbing that's for sure. But on the plus side it looks like not many teams are going to be rubbing their hands at an easy afternoon's work against Charlton.

We're playing percentage, pressing football and it's not always going to be thrilling but it does work. More importantly we look like an actual team who know what the manager wants to do.

A cracking result to start to the season and a great win at a stadium where few teams will come away with three points.

We were very sound defensively and, apart from a few deflected potshots from distance in the first half and Ramsey’s great tackle on Asgard in the second, Wigan created very little, despite dominating first half possession and playing some very nice one touch football. Mannion didn’t have a save to make, other than flipping away a couple of corners, and no team is going to bully us with high balls with Jones and Mitchell in central defence. Josh Mitchell was outstanding and, apart from winning countless defensive duels, he put in a lovely curling free kick of which Colin Walsh would have been proud. As if things couldn’t get better, the man has that rarest of Charlton Athletic attributes - a long throw.

We got a bit more of a grip on the game in the second half and had more of the ball. With both teams’ energy levels starting to dip, Jones introduced Watson (who did well), Aneke (who instantly discomfited the central defenders) and Kanu. Our goal came from a poor defensive header - something that our defenders didn’t do all afternoon - and an excellent finish from Lloyd Jones, who did really well to keep his shot nice and low.

A great result, which will hopefully infuse some extra confidence and belief into the players. On to the next one.

  • What a monumental fuck up from Sky…..mind you, the commentator for our game was top class.
Thought he was biased, but better than I expected.

I'm not, I covered them when I said that we dealt with everything before they got the shot away. That's the point, it's all very well Wigan trying to create but we were so organised and had such good shape that we didn't even let those chances register as shots on goal. It's not like we lived dangerously, even in their best passages Wigan found themselves unable to trouble Mannion. You can't win if you can't even get a shot away.

We had a plan.... And it worked for once!
Keep it tight for 70+ minutes and start to turn the screw in the latter stages
    Long may it continue.
Hopefully home games will offer a little more endeavor. But it's all about the result.
Getting out of this shit pit was never going to be pretty

    PWR..........

Gritty display that wont win any awards for game of the day. Defence looking better than last season & liked the way we got a head or foot to the ball first. Great tackle from Ramsey & saved a certain goal.

However, doubts still persist about our attacking prowess & the front 2 were feeding off scraps. Campbell had a great effort in the 2nd half but apart from that & the goal we did very little up front.

A clean sheet away win is not to be sniffed at but we are still a long way away from being anywhere near a top 6 side.
  • Definitely won't miss Alfie May, now that we can score from anywhere!

It was a very Meh game, honestly made me tired, but most importantly, we got 3 points and a clean sheet. Biggest issue I see this season is there is no creativity.

Wigan had way more shots than us (13-4) BUT we had more shots on target (3-1), so it's a deserved win, rather than a lucky one.

Our defence did an excellent job at blocking their shots and heading it away

it was similar to the back end of last season when we had a similar issue. Maybe the likes of Godden, Berry & Small might be able to offer us more creativity compared to the 3 who started.
Most of us probably think that will only be resolved by signing a midfield who has that quality. All very much a wait and see until window slams shut.

Public service announcement for game one because I'm not having another season of Ventokele or Belgiums: It's Kayne Ramsay. Not Ramsey. Ramsay
    Ramsay. RamsAy.

    Ramsay.

Yep, we had the better 2 chances and took 1. Big win and hopeful something to build on. I expect berry to play over Anderson at home or the lesser opposition

  • Ramsey made a great tackle in the box, when a Wigan striker was one on one with the keeper

Edwards took the ball off the head of Wigan striker at the back post.

    Workman like performance

    Not a great attack

We won, Defence good,  Mitchell won every header.

    Midfield strong

Now looking for a better season than the last.

We didn't really offer much in the final third and on another day could have conceded but for some excellent interventions from both our fullbacks and a bit of luck that their sub fluffed his header straight into mannions arms. Clean sheet on the road and 3 points though so job done.

Some things better than last season:
we won headers in defence and attack
    Dead ball delivery improved
    Dead ball defending better
    Closing down better
    Clean sheet

It was an ugly away win but that is what is needed to succeed in L1, well don the club and the fans.
