Ugly win, clean sheet, keeper did okay and the defence was a big improvement, and if Doc is Dobbo’s replacement he won’t be missed

Midfield lacked creativity, we need a player to slide a ball through and open up a defence and the wing backs were missing all game.

Very worried about the forwards, Gas is 3 yards behind play, so sloooow, Chucks looks spent, no impact at all now when he comes on WTF was that shot and DK is still learning. Lots of pressure on Godden to deliver

Another positive was my Firestick and £40 annual subscription never cut out and I saw the entire game 👍🏻

    Play shit and win.

    The Curbishley mantra.
I know what you mean, but I genuinely don’t believe we played shit today. We weren’t particularly fluent on the ball but that was better than any defensive performance than we saw last year. We pressed well, we played as a team and it was a joy to see a performance of focused, professional players and no stupid defensive errors. A great away win.
  • Anyone have a clip of that kayne ramsay tackle? Unreal
  • I think any rebuilding of a team has to start by making us tough to beat, and Jones seems to have done that already. We were really well organised today and the pressing of the man on the ball is a world apart from the lack of any energy shown under Appleton. We will definitely need to show more creativity on the ball, we were pretty uninspiring today when we had the ball, but in many ways it was the perfect away performance. Edwards already looks like a steal, what a player!

As a sidenote, I know we all want our academy prospects to succeed and we all root for them, but there comes a time where we need to admit they aren't first team level players. I have no idea what Anderson brings to the team. So many games just pass him by and he doesn't contribute anything of note. I also think the same about Campbell, but am willing to give him a few games as he is in a new position. I just struggle to see justification for him to be above some of the forwards he is right now.

Going forward it's clear we're gonna set up being tough to beat. It'll be how often we are able to then convert 0-0s into wins by the end of the game by grabbing chances available to us. We managed it today thanks to Jones but we'll see if the strikers and midfielders are able to step up to the plate a bit more in the coming games ahead.

Great thing about keeping clean sheets, you can't lose and you only have to score one to win!

Hope the focus is on obtaining that magical 40-50% clean sheet number throughout the season. Do that and we'll be right up there.

A long way to go but on first showing, makes such a difference to have aggressive defenders rather than passive ones. I hope this is the season that highlights just how ineffective some of our past ones have been.

Agree we still need a little more quality, and I'm really yet to see a justification for Ahadme's £1 mil price tag, although not to say he's been bad.

    Excellent start, up the Addicks

Didn’t get to watch the second half - delighted with the result. Looking forward to the replay being available on Charlton TV (please).

  • I went to Wigan last year and despite going 3-0 up the last 10 was torture and it always was last season when we were a goal up

There didn’t seem that feeling today

Very early days but Jones and Mitchell looks the players  we hoped for at the back having watched Thomas and Hector coast around its a breath of fresh air

We need more quality in some areas but that was a lovely start today

Personally would like some more pace in midfield a number one keeper and a replacement for Ness

Get that we will be ok

Does anybody know why N.Jones was near the corner flag before being carded?

On comms they said because he was going nuclear because we let their winger have a shot 😂
  • If we’re going to be top six then today’s performance will need to be replicated many times away from The Valley. First principal is not to lose and we’re going to come up against some very decent teams. The trick will be to be dominant at home where we’ll need to collect the lions share of our points. First opportunity will be to put Orient to the sword.

Excellent away win , got a few concerns about creativity but I wonder if Berry starts at home instead of Anderson. Josh Edwards has given NJ a very welcome headache with a superb debut.

I don't expect us to be pretty to watch away from home this season , opposing fans are bound to hate how we play but we limited Wigan to not a lot of absolutely clear cut chances.

As others have said, NJ priority today was a clean sheet and I'm really happy to see us defend smartly and sensibly for the full 90+ minutes.

It did feel like we nicked the 2 extra points, but that is what better sides do. We are not the finished article by any stretch - we didn't create much, but that was evidently by design. If we did this on multiple occasions against teams like this this season and get 3 points, that is all that matters. We just need to have this kind of effort kept up for all the games we have coming up, because we have a really tough set of opening fixtures.

Proud of the lads, proud of the performance.

Reverse angle of the goal - and some happy Charlton fans in the background

A good, solid away win. Wasn't spectacular but didn't need to be. Performance wise I'd say we could have done with another psf or two to gel a bit more as there was some breakdown in communication and misplaced passing on show so very much think we can and will get better.

We definitely need another CM in ahead of Anderson, I like him and he'll have his part to play this season but he was my weak link today, and largely anonymous.

Special mention to Josh Edwards - fantastic defensively, won everything that came his way I think! And covered well with Gillesphey. Will like to see more of him getting forward too.

Extra special mention to Connor Coventry, who as someone that doesn't have the legs to boss midfield and can't tackle, he sure did close down and win the ball back a lot. Also played some lovely passes.

    Great start!

For the goal, Mitchell did really well climbing over the No2, knowing the ball will bounce over him and into the clear path of Jones.

Clever play combining brawn and brain!

Ramsay’s big tackle - not the best angle but the main match highlights didn’t show it

Well, it wasn’t pretty to watch but we were very solid defensively and gave Wigan nothing to show for their marginally more fluent play. Coventry was effective in midfield, putting in good tackles as well as keeping us ticking over and spraying balls down the right channel for Ramsay to run on to. Particular shoutouts to Josh Edwards who was superb throughout, and to Kayne Ramsay for that brilliant recovery tackle when it looked like Wigan would score. Well happy with an opening day win.

One negative for me was the way Ahadme kept waving his arms about and moaning at teammates - very reminiscent of Jayden Stockley and he needs to cut that out.

  • The football was boring as drying paint to watch, but after the shambles of last season, do I care, absolutely not, would take this every match, if it means getting out of this poxy division!
  • It is very clear we need a creative midfielder as Karoy is a nice reserve but he doesn’t generate opportunities for himself or others. Still not convinced with any of Campbell/godden/kanu options.  It wouldn’t surprise me if we look to upgrade in the January window at the second striker.

OMG….call a turd a turd. We owned the first half and created nothing. They were totally in charge,
second half and we desperately need to change. ( Adheme off, Anderson off , did it happen …. NO.

Christ if he couldn’t see it needed changing , then I worry for the future.

take that result. But, SHIT performance in my view.

Just enjoy the three points and clean sheet.

Godden hasn’t played a competitive minute yet and he’s being written off?
