Welcome Matt Godden: Born in Canterbury which is a good start. Please to see this is Matt Godden and not Rebekah Vardy's ex Hubby Mark Godden ! Born in July the same as Alfie May but 2 years before ? Is he still hungry and fit ? Did he just want a team in Kent ? Can he do his talking on the field ? With him being only 5,ft 9 who is going to be the number 9/centre forward/central striker (select your choice) who scores the headed goals ?
Sure smaller guys can score headers but it's a long time ago that CAFC had a forward under 6ft that was a Douglas Bader in the air. Apologies to the late great DB and all people lacking limbs but we have had some strikers that emulated him on the ground.
My mantra is football is all about partnerships all over the pitch but this is a big risk that Jones is doing and as long as he owns this decision then fine as the consequences are clear and we all surely want Nathan to succeed as we all know that it's a results business and with Dobson, CBT and now May leaving the building, next season will be interesting! Nathan didn't want George to go so that move isn't on him.
I think he'll turn out well for us. Coventry fans all seem to rate him, he's played at a higher level - and for longer - than most of our squad and will bring leadership which we sorely need. Think him and Berry will form a formidable partnership. Just hope he's not too old. 2 years with the option taken will make him 36 (I think)!
Those comments and the ones I'm seeing on twitter are a bit concerning, he sounds washed.
No turn of pace, no strength, no hold up play, no passing ability and doesn't bury most of his chances by the sounds of things.
We are basically hanging on to the hope that as it's a level down, he should be fine. Can't think of many examples where that has worked in our favour, but can think of a few where it hasn't.
Based on the comments he doesn't sound like he will suit a Nathan Jones system at all, and my early concern that he's probably too old seems to be the case.
When you sign a player, you want the majority of fans a bit annoyed and confused why he's been sold. It's never good when you start reading 'reckon he could do a job' when we already had a bloke doing THE job.
Hope their comments are wrong.
Re ‘no turn of pace, no strength, no hold up play, no passing ability’, how many of those did Alfie tick ?
Well Alfie definitely had pace, put it this way, you won't see many fans saying 'he's lost his pace' or a sentence along those lines, and if they do, they probably didn't watch Alfie May much, respectfully.
His strength is a weakness, and his holding of the ball, but I've never once looked at Alfies passing and thought it was poor, just not good enough to be a 10, which people have suggested on here.
His positives heavily outweighs those negatives, he scores goals. The difference is, Godden hasn't been, and hasn't really ever been prolific bar one league 1 season 4 years ago. I think he was a decent player, just a bit concerning that all the things we assumed we were getting, as the club were willing to sell May cause of it, we apparently, might not be getting.
Your critique of Godden seems to boil down to taking a couple of posts about him in the Championship, and then thinking that applies in League 1. They are radically different leagues in terms of pace and quality, and if we’re going to pick up on a small sample of comments, the view there is he will do a plenty good enough job in this league.
Godden scores headers, more than a man his size should to be fair, could do with a big lump beside him either way.
When I was a manager in kids and youth football I had some great headers of the ball who were small it's just that Miles Leaburn (big man)will/ could be important to us if after his 3rd bad injury he can get his career back on track and no doubt attract the scouts again if he can have a period of fitness. Godden, Kanu, Leaburn and AN other plus Chuks as a wild card could work but AN other may need to be lethal !
We need to evaluate at the end of window but it is critical we hit the ground running with the new additions and any loans in or out.

It is more than a couple of comments I've seen, sometimes you can also just look at a players highlights, reputation and how he's played against you and have a decent idea. I was 100% sure May would do well for us, I'm about 20-30% sure Godden will have the same impact.
They are different leagues, but not as much as people make out in terms of an individuals quality, if they were, Ipswich wouldn't have gone up. The last time we were in the championship, we went down on the very last day and our squad was genuinely woeful.
There is a gap, but there's been too many times a player has dropped down here and done poorly to suggest it's anything like the gap from the prem to the championship for instance.
I find it peculiar that Birmingham and Huddersfield, who were/are both on the hunt for a striker, and despite them playing Godden a number of times, decided to go for a player a league below and paying probably 3 to 4 times the price for him. In the same way people are saying why was there not championship clubs in for Godden, why were there no championship clubs or high end league 1 clubs in for him. I don't believe for a minute Oxford were, as he's not the type of signing that club makes.
Anyway, I could speculate as much as I want, makes fk all difference. What's done, is done and we will see the results.

Yet again though not everything's that simplistic. Maybe they enquired but didn't want to play for Huddersfield because he didn't want to have to move back up north (having been based in Lincolnshire in his early career) and maybe he didn't want to move to Birmingham as they are a Midlands rival to Coventry and he sees that as disrespectful?
As the May transfer has shown, there's multiple factors in how transfers come about, it's not always about a club going "oil you, join us" and the player just shrugging his shoulders and upping sticks

Well quiet it was similar to when many were banging on about Cole Stockton, yet never really understanding that he has never once in his career played ‘down sarffff’ before.
Well there it is, I hope you are a roaring success Matt, I hope he has been informed of the pressure and expectation fans are likely to put on him given who he's a replacement for.
Interesting comments from Jones and Scott about Godden being more than just a goal scorer and fitting the style of play. Perhaps reaffirming that May didn’t. And that we’ve been after him all summer, so not a knee jerk replacement for Alfie.

DONE DEAL...
I guess he's not a Charlton fan then? The club would've been all over that if it was true surely.
Hope he's more of a Deon Burton and less of a Chris Gunter.
