  • 14 goals from 65 games over the last two seasons - not overly excited.
In the championship! If he was scoring 20+ in the the championship he wouldn't be joining us mate ;)
  • Anyone know what school his kid’s have applied for? Can we get a gofund me setup?

The goalkeeper is a more important position for me at the mo.
Any news on one coming in?
We’ve missed out on Davies who it appears we were waiting to come down for a medical having initially agreed a contract with him.

Not seen any rumours on if/when we’ve spoken to other targets.

Another poster speculated about Joe Lumley of Southamton.
  • Swear we were linked with him 10 years ago which never happened. Always wary of ageing players coming to us hopefully he scores plenty of goals
  • Still awaiting the official announcement, should I stay up for it?

Let’s hope AFKA hasn’t jumped the gun and that Charlie boy hasn’t persuaded Godden to sign for Oxford instead at the 11th hour.

Agreed. We REALLY need our number 1 in before Slovenia, to start the process of building a relationship between the keeper and defence. We don't want to be going out there with just the keeper signed as our number 2 , and 2 keepers that Jones doesn't want.
  • Failed medical?
  • Yeah that'll do. About May's age. 1/3 in the Championship over the last five years. I think we were in for him when he left Stevenage.

I don't think he's the answer to all our woes, but I don't think one player, especially a striker, is going to be. I think Godden could be a good piece in a larger whole.
  • Maybe we wanted to let Alfie have a proper goodbye or maybe there might be a couple announced the same day, and we are just sorting the details.
  • Welcome Matt. Not sure if he will fill Mays shoes but depends who else they sign to fit around him.
  • Godden has spent most of his career at a higher level than league one,  so in theory he should be an asset in this division.
My only concern is his age. He turns 33 shortly and I just hope he isn't another Ben Watson type of signing.
Anyway I wish him well and hope for the best.
  • Awesome signing - Charltons new number 9 !! - get behind him - hes not Alfie May mark 2 - hes Matty Godden Mark 1 !!
  • 4 pages on here and has nobody still not thought to have told the club he has signed ?

  • Those comments and the ones I'm seeing on twitter are a bit concerning, he sounds washed.

No turn of pace, no strength, no hold up play, no passing ability and doesn't bury most of his chances by the sounds of things.

We are basically hanging on to the hope that as it's a level down, he should be fine. Can't think of many examples where that has worked in our favour, but can think of a few where it hasn't.

Based on the comments he doesn't sound like he will suit a Nathan Jones system at all, and my early concern that he's probably too old seems to be the case.

When you sign a player, you want the majority of fans a bit annoyed and confused why he's been sold. It's never good when you start reading 'reckon he could do a job' when we already had a bloke doing THE job.

    Hope their comments are wrong.
Re ‘no turn of pace, no strength, no hold up play, no passing ability’, how many of those did Alfie tick ?

    Turn of pace.

Just added him to the Charlton team in FIFA. He's a 44 sprint speed. Oooof.
  • Strange there is none of the usual tripe on the CAFC official site.  Just Alfie's departure and the mouth-watering preseason friendly against Pompey.

Probably selective memory but the only instance of him using that pace that comes to mind was Exeter away when he broke free near the half way line and then only had the keeper to beat…
  • 33 years old at the beginning of next season.

Last four seasons has tallies of 6, 8, 12 and 6. In the Championship to give that level of balance.

For a player considered more of a 'complete player' there's very little in way of assists from him.

I'm whelmed but open to seeing him play and will make judgement from there.
Hopefully the step down in quality will enable him to push these numbers up again. He's averaged 14 in his last two seasons at this level.

Re ‘no turn of pace, no strength, no hold up play, no passing ability’, how many of those did Alfie tick ?

Well Alfie definitely had pace, put it this way, you won't see many fans saying 'he's lost his pace' or a sentence along those lines, and if they do, they probably didn't watch Alfie May much, respectfully.

His strength is a weakness, and his holding of the ball, but I've never once looked at Alfies passing and thought it was poor, just not good enough to be a 10, which people have suggested on here.

His positives heavily outweighs those negatives, he scores goals. The difference is, Godden hasn't been, and hasn't really ever been prolific bar one league 1 season 4 years ago. I think he was a decent player, just a bit concerning that all the things we assumed we were getting, as the club were willing to sell May cause of it, we apparently, might not be getting.
