The same back 3 had played all the league games so far this season until yesterday afternoon
In those 6 games we have had 4 clean sheets and from the 3 goals conceded 2 of those were 25 yards or more out
Makes no sense to make that decision yesterday. It’s no different if one of your strikers had scored 4 goals in the first 6 games and then you bin him off and he’s not even on the bench
Agree,
I can see the case for giving REG a start after the Cambridge game but not for Mitchell and especially after another star of the midweek game, Taylor, didn't even get on the bench.
No matter how good REG had been why change a successful back five and solid midfield.
Credit to NJ for taking responsibility but I'm still in the dark as to what his thinking was with the back three, the midfield and the forward line changes.
I'm also thinking that NJ has often spoken of preferring a smaller squad as there are fewer players scrabbling for places but we now seem to have a hell of a lot of fit first team players when you include Leaburn, A Campbell and the soon come Dixon as well as "where does he fit in Hylton"?
All managers make mistakes, it's just that the best managers make fewer mistakes than the others, but this seems almost perverse from NJ.
I don’t laud him for admitting it - it was a crass decision. Jones has credit in the bank but that runs out quickly if results go south .
Did I "laud" him or did I give him "credit", quite different things in my mind.
In the interview aired on Charlton Live, NJ says he swapped Mitchell for REG because of tactical reasons and because he wanted us to play a bit more. No doubt he sees REG as more of a ball-player than Mitchell. I don't think there's anything more to it than that.

Strange that he wasn’t even on the bench.
For balance I think, with Potts being left footed.

I didn’t say you did - my criticism was aimed at Jones , not you .

It’s not like REG is John Stones. Extraordinarily ridiculous decision .

Exactly. If he wants us to "play" a bit more, make the adjustments to the midfield and attack, not a defence that has been functioning superbly.

True but he also spent a lot of it as far as I am concerned by not wanting Alfie May and replacing him with the less than prolific goalscorer Ahadme.
And he's been getting out of jail with good results making the hoof ball more acceptable.
are we really that surprised that Jones is somewhat erratic based on his previous at stoke and Southampton? We have to live with the fact that he does everything his way, every time for good or bad.
the funny thing is, he wanted us to play more football. We literally played zero football again yesterday
I think Jones will realise before long that results matter far more than how you play your football at this level. Better to get back to grinding out wins than trying to play teams off the park whilst they ground out wins against us.

My initial impression of REG last season was that he looked quite laid back and comfortable on the ball in defensive situations. But he always passed the ball to his closest teammate. I thought perhaps he'd had explicit instructions. Later in the match he attempted a few medium/long passes - they were awful. He doesn't look comfortable when the opposition allow him to move forward with the ball either. He didn't improve in later matches and it was the same on Saturday. He's just a smoother looking A Mitchell.

TBH, if he doesn’t know that by now, he’s in the wrong job.

Might as well play 4-2-4
