  • 🤣 them videos keep cracking me up. He was having argie bargie with the fella before the ball came in from the free kick. I was just hoping he wasn't going to give a silly foul away.

You hate these players when they play against you but you can't help but love them when they play for you. Proper wind up merchant yesterday. Quality.

It does feel that opponents give out attackers less time on the ball. Whoever they are.

Despite us being the club who’s recruitment is focussed on physicality and aggression over technical ability and creativity.

I’m not convinced the many of the players are really believe in and enjoy playing such a direct and rigid style. Fine for the younger ones who are happy to get game time, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t how players like Docherty got promoted with Hull, or Gillesphey with Plymouth.
  • Now you’ve had a good third of a season watching him, would you lot say he was championship level? Be interested in you’re opinions and whether we should have held on to him or not.

I could see him at a newly promoted Championship club, but I think his slight lack of mobility will prevent him playing for a decent one. Especially in a football world where centre backs are now expected to be good footballers and passers as well.

He'd do a job at Millwall, but as a squad player only.
  • He panics a bit too much to be ready for the Championship. Lost count of the amount of times at the weekend he had time and space to control the ball or pass to a teammate but he just booted it out for a throw instead. Composure can be learned though and he looks better with a commanding player like Jones next to him
  • He's a good defender but he is impossibly slow in a sprint. He's got a good reading of the game so he'll often make up the ground early to get to where he needs to be but I've watched him trailing some players running back to goal and wondered if I have the playback on slow motion. Good character though, I reckon he's smart and diligent enough to build more things into his game to offset his lack of pace and raise his level

Him and L Jones make a good combination, as Jones has the mobility to help cover for Mitchell's lack of pace.

If we'd been winning games I think the reviews would be more generous. In terms of raw defending, we've not had a better CB in ages. He's not the fastest but not quite as slow as is being suggested (but that's just my opinion). His attitude is first class every game and he's a proper old school battler. Improve on the ball and no reason he won't play in the Champ.

He's definitely bereft of pace and I'm not sure he's that quick between the ears either.  He's our best body when the opposition is kicking it long and simple, he's comparable to REG and Gillesphey when it's on the deck.  He'd need twice the athleticism and a major attention upgrade if he's hoping to get a promotion.  He has rarely looked out of place in our current backline - and that is damning indeed.

Intriguing comment about 'lazy defending'.  Fascinated to learn if that's him being a bit too honest about himself, or a slight slip of the tongue (lazy when he meant dozy?), or if he's utterly naffed off by his immediate colleagues and not so subtly throwing them under the bus.  One of those is unfortunate, one he could improve, the other is deeply troubling.

I don't dislike Mitchell but I think Jones is a better CB. Think Mitchell can be a very good League One Player in a better team than Charlton but think any club that got promoted with him would probably look to replace him with someone a bit better suited to Championship football.
  • I think he has been a good signing. He lacks finesse but does his job. IMO, he is a player to build our defence around.
  • Thanks for the replies. Interesting
  • I agree he should eventually step up to the Championship. Pace and ability on the ball isn’t there for PL football, but I don’t think the Championship has moved on so much someone who’s becoming a solid reliable CB won’t find a club where he can play regularly at that level.
  • He's decent. Championship no problem on future imo.  He needs a commanding CB next to him.  Currently he has Gillesphy.

Wouldnt say so atm, maybe in time, I can see why Milwall let him go, Tanganga and Cooper are much better players

I think Jones is by far a superior CB

Yes, and then we’ve got Harding and Hutchinson who are both decent cover for them, as well as Ryan Leonard who can do a very good job as a CB

I like Jones as well, wasn't declaring an opinion on who is better. They could both go on to play at a higher level - who knows - I'm not sure anyone on here was predicting Tom Lockyer would go and play Premier League football while he was turning out for us.

Lloyd was getting hammered on here last season, partly because he had to line-up next to Hector.

Jones & Mitchell complement each other well.
