Not sure a 26 year old who has played just 29 EFL games and a bit of non-league is what I’d class as experienced, but we’ve obviously seen something in him other than being out of contract.
We desperately needed to improve on our two keepers. Hoping this is an improvement
THIS !!!
League experience is pretty low - I can’t believe he is coming in as number one choice
"He’ll provide real good competition to those who we bring into that department."
Really doesn't sound like he's planned to be first choice, at least not straight away. Presumably he's been given 3 years to grow into the role and become more of a first choice.
Three years plus an optional year suggests NJ genuinely rates rather than him just being a cheap option. I’d expect the initial first choice we sign to be a more experienced GK.

That sounds like the sort of experience the pony Isted brought to us
Welcome Will. Good luck. Had never heard of him until a week ago so will reserve any judgement until he plays for us a bit. Keeper department clearly a huge weakness for us last season so needed proper changes.
Hopefully we can shift Isted on permanently. AMB maybe a loan to give him one last go but would need to go somewhere with a strong goalkeeper coaching team and I doubt that exists at the level of club that would take him on loan.

29 EFL games in 3 seasons at Cambridge does beg the question why he didn't play more in that time, when Cambridge were a struggling L1 side, and I don't recall them having a standout keeper in front of him either.
A 3 year contract is a massive commitment for a 26 year old with that playing career, I really hope in a year's time we aren't trying to move him on.

Didn't they have one of our old back up 'keepers, Mitov, as their number one?
If memory serves me right- Didnt Burnley buy Nick Pope off the back of that end of season game against them .Pope was pretty inexperienced at the time. The move didn’t do him any harm.I wonder how much NJ saw in Mannion when we played Cambridge last season

Until last season when Mitov moved to St Johnstone.
That's a proper, good bye and fuck off to Ash and Harry
This bit is the real killer for them
Technical Director Andy Scott commented: “The goalkeeping position is one that Nathan has identified as a key area to strengthen during this transfer window.
I find this very refreshing. Jones has delivered some punchy lines here.
He obviously arrived to an early conclusion as to who should be our number one between Isted and Maynard-Brewer....neither.
“He’ll provide real good competition to those who we bring into that department and obviously he brings a real talent to it.
“We want to improve the department. We’re looking to bring in two goalkeepers to have a real competitive edge to them and two we believe can play at not just this level, but also can play at the level above.”
Just had a quick read of the Cambridge forums and posters are universally sorry to see he’s leaving. Is very popular and well thought of. They kind of saw it coming as he was attracting some very good ratings, plus interest from elsewhere. So all in all…..some good news.👍👏
For me goalkeeper is our first priority to improve, part of the spine of the team that needs improvement. Good luck Will. I can unclamp the legs & pack away the plastic bedsheet for a few days at least.
I wouldn't be too hasty, leave them on the bed for the time being
Goalie was always the single most important thing to address and I'm glad it's first priority. We also wouldn't have signed him if he wasn't a potential first choice imo
'he’s really hungry and he wants to get to and play at a higher level. That’s what attracted us to him.'
This was the statement that says it for me. Clearly the club (Jones) don't think that Isted or AMB have either the desire and ambition (talent we know too much about about). This boy also is at a career crossroads so maybe has something to prove.
Both Isted and AMB have been given the boot in the most clear way, without actually being sacked!
Remember he was highly rated when he was younger. As others have said, he hasn't really played much though.
Isted was in a similar situation, and obviously it hasn't worked out.
I don't know, this doesn't exactly get the pulse racing, but also, sometimes keepers get in weird situations where they don't get a chance to play.
I remain open minded on this, but not blown away. And that's fine, not every signing is going to make me stand up and applaud. With Jones playing a central role in transfers, for this whole thing to work you have to believe in his judgment of talent and ability to uncover some hidden gems.
Also, it's June 10, we can hold off on the "building the team with free transfers" bit for a while. This is the first signing of what is expected to be many. Not all of them will cost fees, and I'd venture most of them won't because we're in League One. If none of them cost fees and none are marquee signings, then we can revisit this.

Welcome to our new number 2.
I mean that's just kind of a thing managers say about new signings. I don't think that indicates that AMB and Isted don't have da fire and da passion. I think it's more in watching us last season, it was clear that neither had the ability, at least at this point.

Will naturally wait to see him in action first though.
Message from Mannion to Cambridge, some positive responses from their fans

Just hope he is better than the revolving door of keepers that we gave signed since we got relegated.
4 in 4 seasons.
Signed
Mr R Moore...🙄
