Charlton Summer Transfer Rumours 2024

NJ doesn't fancy May.....you could see that with all the substitutions at the end of the season........would be crazy to let him go to a competitor in L1 though0

I think it'll be Berry.ShootersHillGuru said:We still need a captain on the pitch. I always favour a centre back for that role but Mitchell is a bit too young at the moment.4 -
Didn't fancy him in that squad. Surely you build a team around May with the summer rebuild?ct_addick said:NJ doesn't fancy May.....you could see that with all the substitutions at the end of the season........would be crazy to let him go to a competitor in L1 though2 -
Would have been relegated without May last season6

But so many are totally invested in Nathan Jones and have been for a long time. Any questioning of his judgment now would bring it all crashing down.blackpool72 said:
It's a bit early to say you have total faith in Jones.J BLOCK said:In the minority, but I wouldn’t be devastated if May goes. I have total faith in Jones and trust his judgment and decision making.I support Charlton Athletic, not Alfie May.
Like you and everyone else I hope he proves to be a great success.
But it's too early to say I have total faith.
If May leaves he better have a good replacement lined up.0 -
Not sure it's that, I think he feels he is changing things too affect the game and if he feels May isn't doing what he needs then so be it. He's paid to make those decisions and Jones does deserve a degree of trust.ct_addick said:NJ doesn't fancy May.....you could see that with all the substitutions at the end of the season........would be crazy to let him go to a competitor in L1 though1 -
Clearly there’s something in this but the subs themselves don’t tell us much. It looks like we’ll stick with 3-5-2 and even if we have four strikers perfect for NJs style it wouldn’t be surprising to see two on the bench regularly replace the two starting. It gives them all game time and makes it easier for the team to press aggressively for the whole game.ct_addick said:NJ doesn't fancy May.....you could see that with all the substitutions at the end of the season........would be crazy to let him go to a competitor in L1 though2 -
had a glance at a Huddersfield site with someone saying they've offered £800k and we want £1.5m, they seemed to think something of £1m+ would get himTheHerminator said:Do people genuinely think that we'll sell May? Unless the bid is £1mill there is no possible calculation in my head to get rid that makes any sense whatsoever.
NJ is a big personality who stamps his authority on sides historically, but he's not a fool. Selling a guaranteed goal return to a rival for £200k makes no sense to anyone at Charlton surely

Don't think Huddersfield would be coming back with a second bid if Alfie was not for sale.11

We're not Pompey, Derby or Oxford, we're Charlton. May has proven he can score at this level and I'm not confident he can easily be replaced.Callumcafc said:
Yes because Pompey, Derby and Oxford all got promoted because they had Alfie May in their team. The Red Robin said:Forget promotion if they sell May
In all of our recent promotions we have relied on a player to get 20+ goals.
97/98 - 23 league goals - Mendonca
99/00 - 24 league goals - Hunt
11/12 - 22 league goals - Wright-Phillips
18/19 - 21 league goals - Taylor
League winners going back to covid.
L1 Champions 23/24 Portsmouth - Colby Bishop - 21 goals
L1 Champions 22/23 Ipswich - Conor Chaplin - 26 goals
L1 Champions 21/22 Wigan - Will Keane - 26 goals
L1 Champions 20/20 Hull - Mallik Wilks - 19 goals

It would be football suicide to sell him unless they are offering millions which they obviously aren't.TheHerminator said:Do people genuinely think that we'll sell May? Unless the bid is £1mill there is no possible calculation in my head to get rid that makes any sense whatsoever.

But is Jones a shoe in for first 11 ?TheHerminator said:

There's no way Huddersfield are offering £1mill! For a 31 year old however good he is.Elthamaddick said:

If they are lets take the money and invest it wisely.5 -
Everyone has a price. Huddersfield are free to keep bidding and we'll keep rejecting unless the money gets sillyChunes said:Don't think Huddersfield would be coming back with a second bid if Alfie was not for sale.1 -
Don’t want to lose May, but I’m not paid to make footballing decisions, Jones is, and 100% he has a better football brain than anyone on this site.
He will sink or swim by his decision making, all we can hope for as fans is he gets it right, regardless of how controversial or odd it may seem now if May goes. May has a say in this of course as he’s under contract, but, why stay IF your not wanted.8 -
If my recollection is correct, didn’t we sign Alfie for £250k ? What amount would make CAFC consider selling May given that a guaranteed 27 goals are going to cost at least £750k and then with the risk of possibly not working out. Will be a brave decision.0

We Sell May We get relegated. Jones gets sacked. We are stuck in League 2 for God knows how long & Jones gets a job 6 months later managing a Championship team.DA9 said:

Yes...we all sink or swim by stupid decisions. Just some come up for air sooner than others.13 -
Hmmm......with Andy Scott in charge 🤔.TheHerminator said:Elthamaddick said:

One of the biggest overreactions I’ve ever seen. There’s been clear talk of a big squad re-haul, the same players from last year will not be starting or even in the squad. So examples of previous years don’t really reflect where we’re going.golfaddick said:

We have just had our lowest league finish in 100 years, and I am sure we all agree that things have to change.
I certainly don't want May to go, and his 23 goals last season were priceless .
However the team weren't good enough, and something has to change.
if Nathan can build a team that plays hi tempo attacking football, where goals don't just come from one player, but they come from all areas of the team we will become at least a top 6 team.
However if Alfie's style of play doesn't fit in with NJ's vision for the team, then something has to give.
What happens if Nathan keeps Alfie and the team plays to Alfie's strengths, and suddenly Alfie gets injured. Suddenly we are well and truly fu**ed.
I for one am trusting Nathan Jones to get it right.

I’m in total agreement with 99% of this.Billericaydickie said:

things did need to change after our lowest league position in a century. However, is changing the one bright spark a good idea?4 -
Or a stupid one .ShootersHillGuru said:If my recollection is correct, didn’t we sign Alfie for £250k ? What amount would make CAFC consider selling May given that a guaranteed 27 goals are going to cost at least £750k and then with the risk of possibly not working out. Will be a brave decision.1 -
So Alfie to go for £1.5M.
Add to that the supposed £750K we bid for JCH in Jan still burning a hole in our pocket.
Add to that the £1M we supposedly bid for Collins(?) in Jan still burning a hole in our pocket.
Deduct the £50K we are meant to be paying for some Scottish LB and the £200K we are paying for Mitchell.
Budget for rest of the window £3M plus whatever our generous billionaires are throwing in on top... Before we even think about a few £m from Gomez.
Suddenly our buying options are opening up.
Exciting times.13 -

The South London Press understands that the Terriers are set to return with an improved offer for the striker, who scored 23 League One goals last season.
