You don’t become a successful side by buying players when they’re at their peak valuation.Finding the player who will become as good as, if not better than, Brannagan in the next 2-3 years should be the goal.6

He can play as a centre back, anchor, box to box. I think he'd be an excellent Dobson replacement.
Also so happens to be Fleetwoods captain and we need a bit of leadership in the middle.
Seems like a no brainer move for meThe aim should be to construct one of the best midfields in the league by signing 2 players to play with Coventry. Wiredu is a good player but I’m not sure he’s that elite level we need in the starting 11Maybe someone like Greg Docherty (out of contract at Hull and been linked previously) and then if we did add Luke Berry that would be 3 quality midfielders that have played at higher levels than league 1
We need someone in midfield who has stature and physicality, and can also bring the ball forward. I just think we could do better than Wiredu. For me, that's going to be the hardest role to fill this summer. I think Pan Camara showed brief flashes when he was fit, but he was basically never fit. We tried Bakinson in that role and he's not quite quick enough, good enough on the ball, or a good enough passer for it. Dobbo played there some, did alright, but he's gone.
This might be one where we have to look at the loan market because it's going to be hard to find at this level. Brrannagan would be great but I have to think if he leaves Oxford he should be going to the Championship, and if he's not, then I would start to wonder if he's quite as good as some think (I've always considered him one of the best players in the league).
As for Bauer, I love that man, not just for Wembley, but for everything. A loan in January would have made sense, similar to what we did with Hector last season, get him in, see if he's fit enough, let him get some sharpness, then decide if you want to offer him a contract. But that didn't happen, and we just don't know how fit and sharp he will be. And unlike with other CBs, he can only play in the middle of a back three, and I think that's where Jones will be best deployed, and possibly the same for Gillesphey as well--I said all second half I just don't think he's mobile enough to play on the left in a transition-centric team, even if he is left footed. I wish Bauer could have a heroic comeback, we should have never let him leave on a free (him and Lockyer would have made for a good Championship CB duo), but I just can't see it.1 -

We shouldn't always compare things to previous Charlton sides who have won promotion, BUT, I do think 18/19 is a good example here--
1. You have established League One players--Bauer, Pearce, Pudders, Taylor, Pratley
2. You had young, exciting players with some League One experience who made big steps forward--Cullen, Aribo, Grant, Phillips, Sarr
3. And then you had young players who basically broke onto the scene and were excellent--Djiksteel and Bielek
To me these are the order of easiest to hardest to find (not necessarily sign). And what you're talking about I view as numbers 2 and especially 3. I think Anderson, Ramsay, Small, and Coventry are good bets to fill the second role next season. Miles as well if he stays and stays fit. Finding the third category oftentimes comes down to a young player breaking out massively, or getting a great loan signing in. Zach Mitchell is certainly worth keeping an eye on for that.
But for the first category, I feel like we have May, Gillesphey, REG, 10A, Edun, Fraser, McGrandles. And apart from May, I have questions about all of them to varying degrees. It just feels like, to me, we need one or two more of those. I think the goal was for REG and Gillesphey to be that, and they might, but neither impressed me enough last season to feel like they are nailed on top six League One players every week.2 -
Regardless of their current contracts at Charlton, I wonder who Jones is looking to replace and push out the door. If May is 'potentially' on the list, probably everyone else, except maybe Leaburn is also on there.0

Some players playing in Scotland that I think are worth a look:
David Watson, Lyall Cameron, Will Dennis, Jordan McGhee, Ryan Leak, Caolan Boyd-Munce, Blair Spittal, Thelonius Bair.0 -

I'd guess he won't want to waste budget on players that aren't ours and aren't starters.0 -

I hope Ryan Leak isn't a goalkeeper.3 -

Thelonius calls himself Theo - disappointed. Don't sign, despite his 13 goals in 33 games in the SPL1

I'd guess he won't want to waste budget on players that aren't ours and aren't starters.
In 2020/21 he made a few more loan signings; Dewsbury-Hall (36 starts, 3 sub apps), Norrington-Davies (16 starts but recalled in Jan), Sam Nombe (1 start, 10 sub apps) and in January he got Tom Ince (3 starts, 4 sub apps). So 50/50 first team and backups there. Looking further back beyond that it does feel like he's turned on the loan system over time, though part of it as well could be the recent trend of teams asking for loan fees and bigger wage contributions than they used to.0 -
I'd forgotten all about Nombe! The one who was about to sign last summer according to a few.
Just checked, 3 goals in 41 for Rotherham (and 0 in 6 for Exeter in L1 before that).
Wonder if he'll fare better for them back in L1?0 - Sponsored links:

GetYerCoreyOut said:@JiMMy 85 with Harrison Male leaving DW, do you think he has the potential to play in league 1? Clearly too good for national league.
It certainly wasn't an issue as one might expect - didn't concede from corners etc. and was never bullied by big strikers, even if they tried. I have heard an argument that his lack of reach might have cost DW a few goals, but it's not something that I noticed. Especially given how many he prevented.
Ultimately I do think he will need to prove himself in the fourth tier before anyone gives him a chance.2 -

Yeah I was never unduly bothered by his height, I just don't know how an EFL club would view it. I think a season in League 2 in a side that plays to his strengths would be ideal.1 -

Would the Welsh International goalkeeper Adam Davies be an option? Seems to be third choice at Sheffield United and has Nathan Jones links from Stoke.2
-
Add Crawley’s Lolos & Darcy to the list.
Two young attacking players with big futures.0 -
Seems the criteria for transfers are:-
1. Used to be at a club where Nathan Jones has been.
2. Ex player.
3. Player where his family is local to Charlton.
Why not just buy the best players available/affordable.3 -

We have already seen this with Nathan bringing in Lua Lua and Small ( think Ramsay left Saints before Jones arrived).
I am keen on some ex players like Wiredu who are academy products who have blossomed elsewhere.
In terms of geography this has also worked in our favour recently. Alfie May wanted to move back to the SEL/Kent area and both Coventry and Edmonds Green were keen on London moves . We also lost Scott Fraser because he is keen to move back to Scotland. Therefore location is important and can mean we get a better quality player or lose someone if their family is up north.
The other criteria seems to be players who do well against us. This also seems to have produced a mixed bag of outcomes.2 -

Not that we should, would or will EXCLUSIVELY target players he's had before but Jones does seem to get loyalty from a certain amount of previous players.0
