MATCH THREAD : Port Vale Vs Charlton Athletic : Saturday 6th January 2024 : KO 15:00

To quote a famous song we are "On The Road Again", travelling up to Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent with a visit to Vale Park, and a tricky fixture with Port Vale, so named after the valley of ports on the Trent and Mersey Canal...apparently
Vale sit in 15th place, one place below us on goal difference, having the same points as us in 29, and will prove tough opposition today, loose today and we could end the day two places above the drop zone, so really is a need to win game, how many have we had of those, but today must be the day we break this depressing run of three straight defeats.

We have locked horns with Port Vale on 35 previous occasions, winning 15, Vale winning 10, and the remaining 10 meetings ending all square...

Vale won the reverse fixture at The Valley 3-2 back in August 2023, wouldn't it be nice to return the favour...we don't want yet another double against us...

Here we go...🤔

Louie Watson returns to the starting line-up for this afternoon’s game against Port Vale.

The midfielder comes in for Chem Campbell, who misses out with a minor ankle injury.

There is no place in the squad for Alfie May, who misses a second game with a back injury....😫

The Addicks are expected to line-up in a 4-3-3 formation with Tennai Watson, Michael Hector, Lloyd Jones and Tayo Edun starting in a back four in front of goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Louie Watson will join captain George Dobson and Jamaica international Karoy Anderson in midfield, with Tyreece Campbell and Corey Blackett-Taylor operating either side of Daniel Kanu.

Lucas Ness returns to the bench and joins Sam Walker, Nathan Asiimwe, Terell Thomas, Scott Fraser, Henry Rylah and Patrick Casey.

New signings Tareeq Bakinson and Lewis Fiorini were not signed in time for today's game but will be eligible for next Saturday's game against Peterborough United at The Valley.

Charlton: Maynard-Brewer; T.Watson, Hector, Jones, Edun; Dobson (c), Anderson, L.Watson; T.Campbell, Kanu, Blackett-Taylor

Subs: Walker, Asiimwe, Ness, Thomas, Fraser, Rylah, Casey

Two nil defeat, if we are lucky.....luckily we can only drop to 16th at worst today.
  • Lots been calling for L Watson to start...lets see what he can do...
  • Glad to see Louie Watson starting.
  • No May, no Chem, no new signings in the squad. Will need another pint before the game.
  • Can’t see past a defeat I’m afraid.

8 youth team players in the squad, at least 4 of whom are definitely not ready. So many gaps to fill
Patience, by the end of the window with our  6 or 7 new signings, we will fly up the league 🤣
  • no c Campbell has he gone back

  • Did we really "need" to play Alfie in the 3 games we lost in a row.
  • I don't think that Vale will be taking a look at that bench and praying that none of our starting XI gets injured. There isn't a League goal between them this season.
  • We'll strengthen in January says Scott.

The squad is weaker than piss water - probably the weakest squad we've announced for a league game. Only CBT knows where the goal is & probably 3 goals spread amongst the rest.

Knowing Charlton we'll nick a win, but  head says a 3-1 defeat
  • This injury to Alfie May is looking very concerning from a Charlton Athletic point of view. Just get a funny feeling this is going to be long term.
  • Louie Watson doesn’t get a look in for 6 weeks, we sign 2 players in his position, then gets a start :-)
    Appleton is an odd manager.

3rd week in a row that 2 teams in the bottom 5 play each other. 1st week Reading drew but last week they won. This week Exeter are playing Carlisle. Lucky Fleetwood are losing.

All Charlton injuries are long term when a decent player is involved.

    Just no pleasing some people...🙄
  • Worried about TC starting, he's looked shattered for months now but other than that probably the best XI available to us at the moment which says a lot

Jesus, that XI looks weak and the bench has an average age of 13.

Charlton are a funny team and sometimes can get a result when you least expect, but it would take a borderline miracle to get a win today.
  • No fan of Tedic but odd to let him go early when we don't have another forward option
Agreed. Would he have missed today through concussion protocols anyway though?

Especially when we had him slogging up and down the wing, marking opposition wingers ...

    Oh yeah possibly..
  • Just been reminded by Brownie in the studio, we haven't kept a clean sheet since October V Reading, and that is terrible...🤷‍♂️
