Perhaps charltonlife can club together, buy it off him and then give it back. Be a good news story and would sum up this club, we always pull together to help out one of our own when needed.
If you bought it and gave it back to him then wouldn't he just sell it again?
A loan to the museum would be a better idea, on the condition that he can buy it back from you again for the same price you paid for it if he comes into the money in the future.

He's had the shirt for 25 years, I doubt he's suddenly thought this takes up way too much room in the wardrobe. Hopefully @off_it's suggestion is what happens and it gets loaned to the museum for him to buy back one day.

I’m not offended in the slightest, it just seemed a bizarre choice of words to aim at a club hero, of course it’s an expression, like most, with a meaning.
It’s a fairly recent phenomenon that footballers are rich and stay rich. Most of those who played in our early prem days still have to hold down a job to pay the bills. Whilst it’s very sad he has to part with things we, as fans, think are beyond value. I completely understand why he chooses to.
