The problem has to be the players. There's absolutely no fight, which is no surprise at all when their captain is a petulant little shit. A club that has had proper leaders as captains like Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Roy Keane, Rooney and Vidic.
Gary Neville has said many times on the Overlap that United teams under Fergie largely ran themselves because the players they had in the dressing room simply wouldn't allow standards to slip. Nowadays they're a joke. Case in point Antony (another petulant little shit) when he came on v City at the weekend, he did nothing except look for a row. Could you imagine him in a side with Roy Keane?1 -

In defence - Chilwell, James and Fofana are always injured. Cucurella and Badiashile are injured a fair bit as well.
Midfield - Lavia and Chukwuemeka always injured.
Up front - Nkunku has missed most of the season.
I think if they had a fully fit Chilwell, James, Fofana, Lavia and Nkunku you'd see a much better side for sure.
Although that said the money they've spent on the players that are fit is still more than enough to be getting better results. Their 2 midfielders alone last night cost them 220m.
