Post-Match thread; Charlton Athletic Vs Barnsley | Saturday 14th January 2023-KO 3-00 PM

edited January 2023 in General Charlton
After a bruising but proud effort at Old Traffic to begin the week, Charlton looked to pick themselves up to make it three straight wins in League One against the visitors Barnsley, who were on a run of their own. We defended brilliantly in the early portion of the first half under decent pressure from the visitors. Tyreece Campbell provided a threat down the Charlton left and was able to break through to score a lovely individual effort, squeezing the ball past the keeper at the near post. The second goal came in the second half, moments after Macaulley Bonne made his 2023 debut in a Charlton shirt. His harassing of the Barnsley backline, spinning in behind and hitting the post led to a chance that allowed Jes Rak-Sakyi to tap in from close range.

Overall, Holden’s more pragmatic approach seems to be paying off as Charlton were resolute in defence, marshaled by the young duo of Lucas Ness and Ashley Maynard-Brewer, and fruitful in attack. We also saw out the game under considerable pressure, this time not of our own making. Barnsley played well throughout, but lacked the cutting edge necessary to break through with a goal. A long sought-after clean sheet win is a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere in the ground came across on CharltonTV loud and clear; it was brilliant even for a relatively sparse crowd.

Charlton 2 Barnsley 0

Over to you.

Delighted with that - showed real belief.

Getting closer to those above in points if not places, not great performance but a great result.

Had that been 1-0 with 10 mins to go they would have equalised. The extra cushion meant we didn't defend rashly and we won because of that. Long may it continue

We did get our fair share of bad luck earlier in season, which coincided with some shite Club Ownership and what now appears make-it-up-as-go-along management from Garner.

Glad to see these kinda wins.

Holden has got some fight into this side. Nice hard fought win that. Credit to Campbell, Ness, and Bonne when he came on. Let's try push to the playoffs.

Barnsley have always been horrible so nice to put one over on them.

Also a nice feeling to not be pissed off with football in general at 17.15 o  a Saturday...

Well done boys, would love to see more of Henry!
Looked good today. Better than he has in most of his other appearances this season

Great result but some awful refereeing decisions…again.  We do seem to get them…

We’ve played better and lost that’s for sure. But credit to everyone out there who put their bodies on the line - one of those games where it is so difficult to pick a stand out.

Feels a little bit like the Jackson caretaker era at the moment with Holden currently managing to get an extra yard of running out of the players.

But we know how that ended, with for me, us playing some of the poorest one dimensional football in recent years (which is saying something).

Its how he and the team responds when that level will inevitably drop slightly. He’s already shown himself willing to change things up tactically which helps, and hopefully we will also have the correct quality personnel to cover spots when it does as well.

Yup yup yup. Enjoyed that, I was hoping we would back up Tuesday with a good performance, and we did ride our luck at times but Barnsley are a very strong squad.

We still had good chances to get some more. But no very happy. Seem well balanced throughout too. Thought Bonne battled well too.

    Overall very pleased.

Tremendous team effort even if not really deserved.Barnsley were good bar their shooting. We rode our luck and got reward for a change.

O'Connell did well although a shame Kane was injured. Campbell and JRS had some very good moments. Bonne harried but I now remember all the offsides! Fraser was immense near the end. Even Henry looked good.

Have a restful week lads and go again next week!

Asked Bob Bolder for a pre match prediction.
He said 2-0 before a ball had been kicked and without hesitation. Well done Bob.
An even bigger well done to the team for that performance especially after Man United and all that must have taken out of them.
Great to get a clean sheet as well thanks to the bar twice and AMB.

Anyone seeing that scoreline would think it had been a comfortable home win, with Charlton in control, when in reality it could have finished 4-4, such were the number of chances Barnsley had in the game.

Poor finishing, good luck and great last ditch defending somehow earned us a clean sheet.

Whether it was his fault or not, under Garner we shipped far too many goals, without scoring enough to get Andy Nelson style wins.

Who was it who said ‘Just win matches’. Seems we’re getting better at that, even when not playing that well.
Barnsley were pretty decent and had a proper left back, which is sort of cheating really.
Bonne was very lively, quite a handful for defenders.
Wish we had a Stockley type when defending corners. Someone who isn’t marking anyone but tries to get his head on the ball.
Tupac took his goal very well, but Leaburn and RakSak were kept quiet by Barnsley’s well organised defence.
    Onwards and upwards!
