He’s made a statement now saying the resident penalty taker asked him to take it, so he did. The manager should be answering the question as to why he didn’t play him from the start.
If he's singling people out for blame, I'd be starting with the players responsible for letting in 3 goals at home in the first half. Even if the penalty had been converted, they would have still needed another 2 goals just to take it to extra time.
Also, if the resident penalty taker told Lookman to take the kick, he should have held his hands up in the dressing room after the game - presumably he didn't, hence Lookman taking a slating in the press conference.
Also why did he ask Lookman to take it when he's been slated for shit penalties in the past? Was it when he was on loan at Fulham he tried to Panenka one and just scuffed it down the middle to the bemused keeper?

He tried to force a move last summer, think after last night it is inevitable that he moves on for next season. Would love to see him back in England and I think there’d be interest from some of the ‘big 6’

He's been out injured for a few weeks and last night was his return so i expect he wasn't completely match fit. There was probably also some complacency that they could get the job done without him.
Lookman was given the ball by the usual taker. He took the penalty and missed. I feel like the manager has some issue with the lad. He's not arrogant so I don't believe he demanded to take it.
Perhaps I'm being overly cynical but It does feel like Atalanta are manufacturing this fall out to engineer a lucrative transfer.
He's out of contract in 2026 anyway, so any fee they get for him this summer would be heavily reduced from what they could've got last summer or even last month.
Also if you want as much money as possible for your player, surely you don't publicly slate him and fall out with him? I don't see how that does anything other than reduce his price because everyone knows he likely wants to leave.

The manager and ownership might feel like they need some manufactured cover to sell a player who's clearly a fan favourite.

Edit - It could even be 1.5%.

His record for Atalanta: Taken 5, Scored 4.
Last night was the first penalty he's missed for them.
Villa would be a fun move to play him opposite Morgan Rodgers
