  • Alcaraz wins the first set 7-5.
  • Draper took an extended medical timeout before this second set and has stopped chasing after makeable balls. Alcaraz serving for 6-1 and a potential Draper retirement looms.
  • As expected, Draper retires.

Whilst I respect Djokovic's record and the longevity of his career, there is something suspicious about these seemingly extreme injuries - 3 inch in tear in his hamstring a few years back and now this one where he nearly had to retire then popped a few pills and managed 2 sets against one of the most athletic players, albeit not playing his best but still extremely physically demanding

Can we find out what these magic pills are and get some for Chuks? I could do some for myself too

I assume all top players are on every legal supplement etc they can find, including being ahead of the game on ones that then get banned.

But there's a few I'd be less surprised if they failed a test for banned PEDs than I would with others.

agreed but these extreme injuries he allegedly gets yet carries on etc. seem suspicious to me

Let find out what they are - the priorities for them are Raducanu, Draper and Chuks - I'll even give up mine for those 3. They must be pretty mean stuff if he was able to carry on the way he plays (especially with all the sliding etc) with a 3 inch hamstring tear

The 3 British players can always ask Novak's new coach what he takes, I'm sure he'll be happy to help  ;)

I guess the other angle is he could be talking bollocks a about how bad injuries are to mess with opponents heads and also make himself look good playing through all that pain etc.
  • Djokovic has to be the GOAT. Still going at almost 38 years old, out there beating top class players who are closer in age to his kids than they are to him.

Emma looking for a new coach (again).

In this case it seems that it was Nick Cavaday who wanted to step back for health reasons.

So after all that he was injured then and not 'faking' an injury like many accused him of the other day.

She'll get the blame, of course

Doesn't mean he hasn't done it in the past. Even John McEnroe, who is a big fan of his, has said he thinks he fakes injuries -although he does pronounce his name Joker Vich

Unfortunately, after winning the doubles in straight sets, Fearnley was beaten by Nishioka and Harris was beaten by Nishikori so Japan won the tie 3-2 at home.
  • I see Emma Raducanu has suffered her fourth consecutive defeat and third successive first round elimination. Yet again she took a wild card (lost to the world number 25) rather than qualify against an opponent ranked no higher than 94. She needs to be having a run of games and there is an opportunity to do that in Dubai next week, if she decides to play in that tournament, as she is not ranked high enough to enter the main draw. She also needs to sort that new coach out sooner rather than later.

    Definitely re the new coach.

The only bad result was Singapore though. She beat 2 players ranked higher than her at the AO, one a seed then was thrashed by Swiatek - but even those in the top 30 or 40 get thrashed by her. Singapore was poor, as beaten by a player ranked below her.

But whilst Abu Dhabi and Qatar were first round defeats, they were both by players ranked above her, so not nearly as bad, as going with ranking. Today was world 25 and Abu Dhabi no. 37. That said, she has often beaten players ranked 20 to 40, just doesn't do it often enough due to her limited schedule and lack of consistency.

So putting it in context, which so many don't, 2 very poor results, 1 thrashing by world 2, a poor result in Singapore then 2 losses to players ranked higher. So 3 first round defeats looks poor, but realistically she wasn't expected to win 2 of them going on form.

A lot to improve on though

Agree up to a point but having won a slam at such a young age the expectations were that she wd be ranked higher than 60. Leylah Fernandes who she beat in the slam final is ranked 27 for example

Agreed about expectations. But expectations are often unrealistic, especially with all her injury issues. There are quite a few young women around who have won a single grand slam young and struggled after.

The expectations on Gauff were immense when she beat Venus Williams and look at how long she took to win her first grand slam. But then she has stayed at that level though. Her trajectory was more normal and she went ot a tennis school for a while. Raducanu was a full time school girl doing her A levels and playing only 8 hours tennis a week before Wimbledon and the USO.

She's certainly capable but has a lot to work on - first off by getting a coach of course -she must feel a bit lost. Hopefully getting a full time fitness coach will help too. She needs to get her revised service more consistent and more consistency in general. Staying injury free will make a huge difference as well. I guess we will have to see. I don't think it is panic stations yet
  • 3.5 years since THAT win, and we're still talking about her physical endurance and lack of a settled coaching team. That's the disappointing thing.

Hardly her fault her coach had to step down because he is very unwell.
She took nearly a year out having operations and had an ok year last year out of those 3.5 years though
