I see Emma Raducanu has suffered her fourth consecutive defeat and third successive first round elimination. Yet again she took a wild card (lost to the world number 25) rather than qualify against an opponent ranked no higher than 94. She needs to be having a run of games and there is an opportunity to do that in Dubai next week, if she decides to play in that tournament, as she is not ranked high enough to enter the main draw. She also needs to sort that new coach out sooner rather than later.
Definitely re the new coach.
The only bad result was Singapore though. She beat 2 players ranked higher than her at the AO, one a seed then was thrashed by Swiatek - but even those in the top 30 or 40 get thrashed by her. Singapore was poor, as beaten by a player ranked below her.
But whilst Abu Dhabi and Qatar were first round defeats, they were both by players ranked above her, so not nearly as bad, as going with ranking. Today was world 25 and Abu Dhabi no. 37. That said, she has often beaten players ranked 20 to 40, just doesn't do it often enough due to her limited schedule and lack of consistency.
So putting it in context, which so many don't, 2 very poor results, 1 thrashing by world 2, a poor result in Singapore then 2 losses to players ranked higher. So 3 first round defeats looks poor, but realistically she wasn't expected to win 2 of them going on form.
A lot to improve on though
Agree up to a point but having won a slam at such a young age the expectations were that she wd be ranked higher than 60. Leylah Fernandes who she beat in the slam final is ranked 27 for example
Agreed about expectations. But expectations are often unrealistic, especially with all her injury issues. There are quite a few young women around who have won a single grand slam young and struggled after.
The expectations on Gauff were immense when she beat Venus Williams and look at how long she took to win her first grand slam. But then she has stayed at that level though. Her trajectory was more normal and she went ot a tennis school for a while. Raducanu was a full time school girl doing her A levels and playing only 8 hours tennis a week before Wimbledon and the USO. She's certainly capable but has a lot to work on - first off by getting a coach of course -she must feel a bit lost. Hopefully getting a full time fitness coach will help too. She needs to get her revised service more consistent and more consistency in general. Staying injury free will make a huge difference as well. I guess we will have to see. I don't think it is panic stations yet
Nail on head
We shouldn't be surprised that ER gets constant dogs abuse. It must be tiresome in the extreme for her. I wonder how much comfort it is to her that she has already achieved many multiples of anything most of the hectoring buffoons will achieve in all their miserable sniping lives, all added together? Her USO victory was a total aberration, everything that could have fallen her way, did, she didn't drop a set, had the shortest and sweetest path possible to the final. She still had to perform but that was unprecedented and will probably never be repeated. A fine indication of her basic talent but no reasonable barometer for anyone's career.

She certainly had the sweetest draw but still had to bear everyone who beat everyone they played. But she's has the luck reversed recently with first round draws, except for Singapore, which was the only poor result. But there is a lot of rubbish about no top players playing that year which is completely untrue - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_US_Open_–_Women's_singles Barty, Sabalenka, Osaka, Swiatek, Halep, Jabeur, Gauff to name a few
The amount of ridiculous, completely biased and irrational, if not cruel. statements I read about her is insane, Who are these saddos? I'm not even a particular fan of hers, but detest the ridiculous statements - for once it is nice to be able to discuss it reasonably somewhere - the usual suspects don't seem to be interested in tennis, thank goodness
Absolutely shocking situation. Professional tennis owes Emma - and all other participants - a duty of care. I hope this person never sets foot near a tennis court ever again.
I know Monica Seles was a few years ago now but does nobody remember?
She was stabbed, wasn't she.
I though Raducanu did well in the match in the end, considering the circumstances and the ranking of her opponent. Took the first set to a tie break and even had a set point
Of course the headlines were that she was in tears and the awful reasons only in the article - brought out the usual nasty comments of course
2 pairs of Brits in the Doha men's doubles finals. And of course, Draper in the mens semis.
With such men's doubles specialists, why don't GB play stronger doubles players in the Davis Cup and the United Cup?
Cash and Glasspool have been together just a few months and Skupski and Salisbury only a little longer. If those pairs can sustain their form I suspect we will play a stronger doubles pair in the Davis Cup in future.
