  • I was quite pleased when Gunter signed ... and I think Gallen was too.  I thought we had made a very good signing.

100-ish International caps ... the guy should ooze class and experience ... and leadership.  Our younger players should be mopping up everything he says and does.

But he has been a disappointment.  Some horrible errors ... including the concession of a penalty by virtue of a player running across him and allowing Gunter to clip his heels.  That's schoolboy stuff.

I think Gunter's performance against Italy gives a clue why.  He did almost nothing.  Gestured a bit to other players, but was rarely directly marking anyone.  Didn't get exposed, didn't get involved.

I think he is cruise mode these days.  Been there, done it.

    Don't expect much next season.

I think your memory is playing tricks on you. Here’s the Statbank marks and my post match comments for that game on 1st February 2014.

Can't believe we never got something from this game. Team spirit was good and the youngsters Poyet,Lennon and Cousins did very well. Now for the foreign Legion, Thuram dire never came for a single cross. I've played with better keepers on a Sunday morning. Reza showed early promise tired and did little 2nd half. Astrit average again tired, Nego iffy not match fit , away support fantastic . We move on to Brum

I went.. I thought  he did well enough  considering,  new country   new team mates and new everything.  Why are you determined to rubbish him when now he is an international having naturalised only relatively recently ?  14 th cap tonight in less than 2 years but rubbish !
Pardon! Who’s rubbishing him now? Those comments were mine on the day and the marks were from other fellow fans on here that went to the match. I suggest you read my post again and take a deep breath 🙄.
Good for you but he is an international right back in a new country where he settled and learned (presumably) one of the two most difficult  languages  in Europe , Finnish being the other.

He may well settled here . Who knows ?
I have seen opinions on here over the years about players who haven't  been rated . Players like Fox and Sarr for example.  They play in the Championship.  We are 3rd rate in L1 . Nego is an international playin in the  Hungarian top league for a team that finished 3rd and he has 228 appearances for them.
Likewise Gunter 102 caps yet is rubbished on here.
L I said was he looked ok in the game at Wigan . 14 caps but rubbish was a rhetorical remark.  He plainly isn't  rubbish and is fitter now.
You can't  judge a player on 1 game . Well I can't but considering  his circumstances at the time he was ok.

What are you waffling on about 🤷‍♂️. We all see player’s performances differently. That day at Wigan over 7 years ago yours clearly wasn’t in accord with many on here as I have evidenced, as unpalatable as that may be.

I don’t really give a toss what Nego has done since to be honest because he’s not a Charlton player. He clearly never cut it with the management at the time either who had him forced upon them by the Duchatelet regime and was subsequently frozen out / moved on. Absolutely nothing to do with the fans.

Back on topic as this is the Chris Gunter thread I’ll say it again, he started well but fell away badly notwithstanding being asked to play out of position. He’s a very experienced international footballer who imho underperformed last season. I’m out! ✋

When the opening sentence accuses the opposition  to be waffling you can bet that they have no real argument.

I say we never saw enough  of him and he was in a completely strange environment where he didn't  settle due to the manager's hostile view and being ignored .
He clearly is better than the staff at Charlton  thought and our fans who are such great scouts judged on one game. You don't get 14 caps in a country that is openly hostile to foreigners , especially black ones without having a bit about you.

Try living and working abroad in a strange culture.  I have and it takes effort and understanding. Which you lack.

If I have talked to the hand,  so be it.

Yesterday shows you use bias to reinforce prejudice views instead of looking at the facts as they are.
    You sir, are absolutely mental.

Agree he seemed disinterested at times with lapses of concentration....maybe having a crowd present will pick him up

If I didn’t know who you were following your reincarnation I’d say you’ve completely lost the plot. I thought you might have changed having been given a second chance however it’s just much of the same 😴. So Chris Powell, Nego’s  manager at the time was hostile, where’s your evidence for that? There’s a big difference between hostility and not selecting someone because they are no better than players already in the team.

At no point have I said Nego is rubbish or hasn’t improved, all I have done is tried to refresh you memory on his one and only appearance for us read my op again I used the words iffy and not match fit. As for bias and prejudiced views, do me a favour go and have a look in the mirror and have a serious word with yourself.

Must be watching a different  bloke then. Admittedly only seen him on tv unless he played against Doncaster at the Valley. Probably  your TV uses valves etc.

I bet you miss Sarr to direct your angst at or perhaps you have xenophobic tendencies when seeking  scapegoats at CAFC.
You can get help, you know?

Maybe try religion?  Or a soothing bubble bath.

Powell said and has said more than once that he was sent players by RD, informed by e-mail and told to play them. He was fuming and has said he didn't consider  the players suitable. I deed of that first bunch most weren't.  Peter the Pole looked awful for 4 minutes , Thuram was a typical Continental keeper from the 50's.

The day we played Sheffield United in the cup there was a rumour at our end that Powell was finished at Charlton. He didn't  play the players much and was hostile  to having them dumped on him.

Our keeper at the time was outed to
Orient.  RD said our players ar CAFC weren't up to it.  Hard not to have a hostile environment  there isn't it ?

    Your evidence  sir.
Not accepted. He played Adjarevic and Reza on merit in the league and during the cup run didn't he, prior to that ending at Bramall Lane. He may not have been happy with all that was going on with Duchatelet interfering with team selection but that doesn't translate into a hostile environment for the players otherwise the squad wouldn't have made it to the quarter finals. It's a shame they've done away with the red telephone boxes because you could have popped into one and had an argument with yourself instead of continually looking for them on here . The clock is ticking.

Wales have certainly been hard done by, in terms of the locations, the lack of support they've had and the amount of travelling

But then that was just the luck of the draw... they could easily have ended up in a Group where they'd have played in Amsterdam and Bucharest or Copenhagen and Saint Petersburg.

In addition did they have to travel as far as England did in Brazil or Russia?

He wouldn’t have said that had they won. Shame they didn’t bother to put on a show to the 350 Welsh that were in the ground. Off the back of that disgraceful performance they should be paying for the for the fans travel and match tickets.
  • He's voicing his opinion and he is still likely to be hurt by the national sides performance and the result. After a day or 2, he probably wouldn't feel the same and come out with this.

It may not be very accurate and it may sound like excuses, but he's wound up and he cares. I hope he brings that side of his persona to the valley next season.

  • He is trending on Twitter.
  • I think Gunter is right tbh. It massively favours certain teams. That said I care not a jot that Wales are out. Think Gunter could be decent for us next year and sort of player who may even be captain.

It certainty should do, but they knew that before going in to the tournament. First off we heard “we’re just glad to be there” and all of a sudden of the back of a tonking, it’s unfair. In all honesty,  they would have got thumped in Cardiff yesterday with the performance they put in.

Scotland for example were on home soil for 2 games and look at what happened to them. 2 games lost, scored 1 conceded 5…. Mind you I suppose that over achieving for them.

The difference being the Brazil and Russia tournaments where within one country, as it should be.

It’s nonsense to have Wales based in Baku, travelling well over 5,000 miles when their competitors get to stay close to home. It didn’t need to be that way, it made no sense at the time and still doesn’t.

Look at this list of where teams are based and tell me Wales haven’t been absolutely shafted: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.uefa.com/uefaeuro-2020/news/0259-0e8ea1e12265-1c20a6816e6c-1000--euro-2020-where-will-the-teams-be-based/amp/

    Stop bullying, you nasty man.

Euro 2020: Wales defender Chris Gunter calls tournament format 'a joke'

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57629385
Wales have certainly been hard done by, in terms of the locations, the lack of support they've had and the amount of travelling
But then that was just the luck of the draw... they could easily have ended up in a Group where they'd have played in Amsterdam and Bucharest or Copenhagen and Saint Petersburg.

In addition did they have to travel as far as England did in Brazil or Russia?

I'd agree that Wales in this case have been hit with a double whammy of UK Covid rules restricting fans travelling outside of the country and the tournament being spread across so many countries, giving far more home nations than usual. Plus the farce of being based in Baku

Normally you have just 1 or 2 host countries, and thus only 2 out of the 24 countries would have home advantage, whereas in this competition 9 countries have benefited

  • Let's be honest, the whole thing is a joke. I might be wrong, but England Italy Spain and Germany played all their group games at home, while the less lucrative nations had to fly all over the place! Its ludicrous really. And the whole best placed 3rd team stuff just devalues it too IMHO. But "it is what it is". Sounds a bit like sour grapes, as Wales were completely outplayed. Yes, they might have had more fans there yesterday, but we're banned from going to Holland Chris. That's not something Platini could have foreseen when he came up with this mad idea in the 1st place
  • I think I'd have really quite enjoyed the set up of the games across the tournament if there was travel, and was hoping to go to Rome originally for one of their games.

It's more just Azerbaijan hosting in general which is daft and led to ridiculous travel across the board.
  • Hate the Welsh and laughed my socks off last night. But Gunter has a point
  • Quite a tiring week for Gunter, flying all the way to deepest Russia then playing the full 90. You hope that he won't have to start on Wednesday

Why did Belarus play in Russia?

Sanctions against Belarus. Russia is the only country to support the dreadful Belarus regime
