He is a better player than Matthews and his international record vouches for that as there is a direct comparison. I suspect he will be an asset for us next season. How many other League One clubs had players doing a decent job against one of the tournament favourites?
He’s not shown he’s better than Matthews while playing for us and that’s what matters.
So it is fair to ask why that might be. What I am saying is it can't be he is a worse player than Matthews. That is evidenced.
Maybe he is no longer better than Matthews, but he keeps his place in the Wales squad due to his reputation and experience?

He wouldn’t have been helped by the constant changes by Bowyer, and League 1 football won’t be as possession based as international football, so you could say we weren’t set up to get the best out of him.

However Adkins dropped him for Matthews, it’s just unclear if that was based on ability, style, attitude or something else.
Or the fact Matthews was there for the ten days Adkins had on the training ground, Gunter wasn't.  Millar (who was also away) didn't start the next game either and only came back in due in a injury.  It wasn't broke so don't fix it.

Or it maybe another reason totally.

If I recall correctly, Millar was left out because of jet lag. When he next came on (as a sub) his legs were still gone, he said so in the post-match interview.

As for Gunter, he had previously played for Adkins, so not like he'd be a stranger coming back after 10 days.

In another interview, when asked about Adkins, Matthews said "Well, he likes me!" So I'd suggest that seems the simplest answer as to why he played over Gunter.

Felt nothing at all seeing his name on the team sheet yesterday. I really struggle to identify with him as a Charlton player. Strange really, as I’ve not had that with any other player at major tournaments who have been with Charlton.

It feels like he’s been out on loan to us from Wales.
I felt the same but put it down to having only ever seen him as a charlton player on tv thanks to Covid-19
  • I have gone both ways on the Gunter / Matthews debate and I was surprised when Adam signed a few weeks after Chris.

I hope Adam stays and we are still having this debate next season.

    Not for us.
Pray tell who 'Us' is . For whom do you speak and why are you the leader of those ITK about the skill and ability  levels of Charlton  players.
What is Adam Matthew's average rating for us in the 20/21 season? 6.28

What is Chris Gunter's average rating for that same period? 6.11

Matthews has been the better player for us this season despite us all saying it is a worse season than last from him.

I appreciate Gunter has been thrown all about defence for us, but I don't think it's unfair to say that last season Gunter was a disappointment on what we all expected more so than Matthews.

Anyway I hope both can step up for us next season (if we can convince Matthews to re-sign)

Context Daz context, if we don't apply context to statistics where would be?  America, that's where

Matthews played 8 of the ten games Adkins was in charge for, I think.  I suspect the whole teams marks were about 0.25 higher than say ten games Gunter played in January?

I don't think, really, you can judge a lot of our players on last season.  Almost all of them were significantly worse than the previous season at a higher level.

If they are both here next season, who ever is on the bench when we go through a rough patch will, obviously, be the significantly better of the two

  • Interesting insight from Adkins .

Apparently Gunter will have no break this summer because he wants to be fit for us . Most players would have a break following international duty .

I agree with what was said above that Gunter's international appearances gave Matthews the shirt when Nigel started and Adam played so well he kept the shirt

If you count only the games where Gunter started at RB or RWB, his average mark last season was 6.29
So they're much of a muchness.

Can therefore argue that Gunter still isn't the better player.

FWIW I didn't mind Gunter at RB, I don't mind Matthews there, but at this level we've had better at RB than both. With their respective histories better was expected of both players.

While Gunter will clearly be having to keep himself in peak fitness, it's not as if he'll be playing masses of games at the Euros. You imagine that yesterday would be his only game, or certainly his only start
  • Gunter played left side of 3 CB  in
3 5 2 then when down to 10 men LCB in 4 4 1. Against Italy.  And people on here think he can't play in L 1.  I can't  be sure but wasn't  he described as "dog shite' , a scarf London technical term for inadequate.

Same with Fox and Sarr both now in higher division than Charlton.

I thought  he was sound today.  Against one of the best squads in the world, many of whom may actually  play top level football.
I don't really see what that has to do with anything. I don't judge him on what he does for his country, I judge him on how he's played for Charlton Athletic and he's been poor. Even Dylan Levitt got a game against Italy!
  • The jury is out as to who is the best right back,Gunter clearly the more versatile. My problem with Matthews,he seems to always leave it until the last minute to sign for us,as if we are a last resort.

I get that. I do feel though we’ll see a better Gunter next season
  • He was fine until moved to CB. I agree with the above and reckon we will see a better Gunter next season.
  • IMO - not good enough, and I’m underwhelmed by our signings being old plodders.
  • Ask yourself this, if Matthews doesn’t re-sign would you want Gunter as first choice right back? I wouldn’t.

Maybe, or maybe not. As others have said, I think there's a better Gunter still in there somewhere even a year older and if he gets an extended run in his favoured position we just might see it. Would not be my first choice I admit but I am certainly not rulig it out.

Never noticed him before but an ex addick playing for Hungary.  Loic Nego, one game against  Wigan Athletic away. He looked ok in that game. Then that was it.
I think your memory is playing tricks on you. Here’s the Statbank marks and my post match comments for that game on 1st February 2014.

    Poyet...........................6.84 MoM

    Lennon........................6.59

    Wood..........................6.56

    Morrison.....................6.54

    Ghoochanneijhad........6.48

    Jackson.......................6.46

    Cousins.......................6.24

    Ajdarevic.....................6.04

    Sordell........................5.86

    Nego...........................5.50

    Thuram.......................4.84

    Team........6.18

Can't believe we never got something from this game. Team spirit was good and the youngsters Poyet,Lennon and Cousins did very well. Now for the foreign Legion, Thuram dire never came for a single cross. I've played with better keepers on a Sunday morning. Reza showed early promise tired and did little 2nd half. Astrit average again tired, Nego iffy not match fit , away support fantastic . We move on to Brum

I went.. I thought  he did well enough  considering,  new country   new team mates and new everything.  Why are you determined to rubbish him when now he is an international having naturalised only relatively recently ?  14 th cap tonight in less than 2 years but rubbish !
Pardon! Who’s rubbishing him now? Those comments were mine on the day and the marks were from other fellow fans on here that went to the match. I suggest you read my post again and take a deep breath 🙄.

Gunter has been average at best for us. He is rubbished for what he had done for us.

Not for Wales, not for Reading or even Forest. None of that matters compared to what he does for Charlton.
  • Ask yourself this, if Matthews doesn’t re-sign would you want Gunter as first choice right back? I wouldn’t.
What will you  do then when Gunter plays in games ? Leave the stadium  when the team sheet is announced, seek another team to support or start a protest  movement?
Support him during the game like I would any player. Is that alright with you?
  • Ask yourself this, if Matthews doesn’t re-sign would you want Gunter as first choice right back? I wouldn’t.
i wouldn't want Matthews as 1st choice either

Good for you but he is an international right back in a new country where he settled and learned (presumably) one of the two most difficult  languages  in Europe , Finnish being the other.

He may well settled here . Who knows ?
I have seen opinions on here over the years about players who haven't  been rated . Players like Fox and Sarr for example.  They play in the Championship.  We are 3rd rate in L1 . Nego is an international playin in the  Hungarian top league for a team that finished 3rd and he has 228 appearances for them.
Likewise Gunter 102 caps yet is rubbished on here.
L I said was he looked ok in the game at Wigan . 14 caps but rubbish was a rhetorical remark.  He plainly isn't  rubbish and is fitter now.
You can't  judge a player on 1 game . Well I can't but considering  his circumstances at the time he was ok.

What are you waffling on about 🤷‍♂️. We all see player’s performances differently. That day at Wigan over 7 years ago yours clearly wasn’t in accord with many on here as I have evidenced, as unpalatable as that may be.

I don’t really give a toss what Nego has done since to be honest because he’s not a Charlton player. He clearly never cut it with the management at the time either who had him forced upon them by the Duchatelet regime and was subsequently frozen out / moved on. Absolutely nothing to do with the fans.

Back on topic as this is the Chris Gunter thread I’ll say it again, he started well but fell away badly notwithstanding being asked to play out of position. He’s a very experienced international footballer who imho underperformed last season. I’m out! ✋

  • I see Gunter as on a par with Matthews defensively but Matthews shades it for me going forward. If Matthews signs a new contract I would be happy with having the two of them again.
  • Ask yourself this, if Matthews doesn’t re-sign would you want Gunter as first choice right back? I wouldn’t.
i wouldn't want Matthews as 1st choice either
who will we sign better than Matthews at RB ?
  • Gunther is better than Matthews, FACT :)
  • I certainly wouldn't be confident if we played Matthews at CB let's put it that way!!
