I had hoped we'd now be setting our sights a little higher than unproven kids, however, Bowyer and Gallen rarely get it wrong, so if this kid's a target then I trust their judgement
It’s mad how some people actually think it’s like recruiting on Football Manager. Yeah all we need is a pacey striker around 25-30 (so basically their optimum level for age) that can score goals in the Championship.
Those type of players are like rocking horse shit! And we are trying to recruit in the worst window.
The kid bagged a hat trick against a team we mustered about 2 shots against, albeit they may have rested some players. With Taylor coming back to full fitness he could potentially get back to his best playing with this type of forward (see KAG).
Spend our money of a couple of good midfielders (one hopefully being Maddison), and keep our selves up. Then hopefully the real recruitment starts in the summer and we can aim for top half of the table.
Exactly. If you look at the top scorers in the Championship last season, so players who have proven they can score at this level, you're seeing players go for insane money once they've shown they have the ability. Neal Maupay and Oli McBurnie both went to Premier League clubs for £20m each, they're your proven goalscorers. Ivan Toney has had one and a half good seasons in L1, Peterborough are looking for crazy money for him, and he hasn't even shown he can score at this level yet. The only team you could realisitically look at bending over for a cheap talented player in English football was Roland's Charlton, and (hopefully) even that opportunity has gone now. At our level with an obvious desire to not tear up the wage budget at this stage in the season, the only way we're getting anywhere is by taking a punt on someone who hasn't done it yet but we think could. Like how we trusted a L1-proven striker to take the step up to the Championship alongside a winger who couldn't get into a Championship team and a non-league striker who had never been near this level. Like how we loaned in a 19 year old who had never played senior football in his life at the start of the season, and are all devasted now he's been taken away from us mid-season. This isn't the old days when you could honestly pull a decent player out of a midtable or lower division team's side without junking your budget. Talented proven players at this level cost insane money and we're better off hunting the bargains, it's just hopefully this time the pool of talent we're fishing in should be bigger than under Roland when we were essentially reliant on favours a lot.
If Lyle stays this window ( and personally I hope he does ) then Taylor, Bonne, Hemed and Green / Davison isn't a bad pool of strikers - worst case last 15 mins of a game put Naby up there ! It seems most championship clubs are chasing the same strikers in Toney , Wells , Vydra and Taylor.
I think more important is a Centre Back partner for Lockyer. - need to stop leaking goals. Always think we will create chances just need to stop conceding first and chasing games. Pearce and Sarr have question marks for me at the back. Cullen and Pratley / Field will definitely help but Pearce and Sarr always seem to have a rick in them sometime in 90 mins. I know Centre Back signings aren't that exciting but I think that's where its needed most right now.
Quite frankly, I can’t get my head around some of the immediate negativity with regard to our transfer targets when they get mentioned on here.
A - none of us are scouts or are working in football. We think we know a little bi about the game and although I am sure we can all probably recognise good football when we see it, and good players when we see them, none of us know what it’s truly like to see a player play in the context of what goes on in training, their potential, physique, how they carry themselves etc
B - We’re Charlton Athletic trying to buy players in the Jan transfer window within a sustainable budget. Who are you expecting? There seems to be a massive disconnect between who people suddenly think we are able to get, and those that we’re likely to get, given the parameters we have to operate in at this time of the season. The variables are many, ever changing and some beyond our control
C - Gallen’s recruitment given the conditions he has been working too to date, has been nothing short of miraculous. There will always be the odd players who doesn’t work out, but f*** me, we even got something out of Josh Parker last season who admittedly wasn’t the sort of player you would build your team around, but he played his role in the run in. With the added impetus of having what seems like a bit more backing under Nimer, he will deliver and I trust him implicitly.
Don’t mean to have a go, but sometimes I wonder what people’s actual concept of what they think we will get is, versus the reality. Have some faith :-)
I do want a quality centre back to partner Lockyer for the long term but I don't think now is the time, Oshi, Nabs and Pearce should be just about enough to do the job at hand, even Pratley can play there, the issue is what plays ahead of them as been repeated before, the difference someone like Cullen makes. We need a proper energetic centre mid who can break up play and get the ball forward and a versatile player who can play as an attacking mid or a winger which is Maddison obviously and then a utility front player. That should just be enough.
We don't need full backs, Doughty and Purrington ain't getting us relegated, neither are Solly or Matthews, it's just further up where we need the extra goal or two a game.
I think we have been crying out for a proper playmaker for years. Maybe since Andy Reid left. Someone that can consistently create chances and unlock defences. Possibly chip in with a few goals from midfield. Any ideas?

I'd be very excited if we brought in Idah, but purely based on the fact that hes from my part of the world. I don't believe I've ever seen him play. People around here talk highly of him and have done for a while but thats not unusual for a young player contracted to a Premier League or Championship club.
He'll be 19 in a few weeks, almost exactly 1 year younger than Gallagher but has already got more senior football under his belt than Gallagher had when he came to Charlton. Hes about two years younger than Leko but already has more senior goals than Leko had when he came here. We definitely shouldn't write him off just because hes young.
On the streets of South London Panic on the streets of Birmingham I wonder to myself... Could the Addicks sign Maddison? Bielsa’s Leeds side may send us down I wonder to myself...

Agree with that but there’s a but. Look yourself in the eye and say honestly that you wasn’t expecting someone with a slightly higher profile than an 18 year old Norwich loanee ? I’m not saying that won’t happen but I can’t imagine too many of us not starting to wonder. In Bowyer we trust.
The assists are absolutely ridiculous, he is the reason Peterborough have this record of having insane strikers and selling them on, it's his service, watch some of his montages and it's clear right away, he could have made even spongefoot a 15 goal man. Worth every penny this window don't care if he's free in the summer

If there is an element of "underwhelmedness" it's that Adam Idah looks like the sort of signing we'd make if Roland was still our owner. Indeed from this article it seems that he was expected to go to a L1 side (Doncaster were after him), I don't see any other Championship sides linked to him.

You were doing so well until you mentioned "15 goals and "Spongefoot!" in the same sentence I have now lost all respect for you Maddison is a winger - not the second coming
Don't get the negativity around Idah, we create the least chances in the championship so we need a striker who can put them away. Currently we have Hemed who is half-fit and also looks a bit of a donkey on the ball, Taylor who is only just coming back from another injury, Bonne who is injured, and Davison who is not ready for championship football. Those who think Davison is a viable option are mad, yes he gives 100% but he doesn't look like the player who gets one chance and scores - I like the kid but he needs a loan spell in L1 or L2 to build his confidence. So that leaves us with 2 strikers who have had injuries this year and 1 who is an ancient artefact.
Idah is young, hungry, and can hopefully run with the ball at his feet. Taylor is also very good at getting assists and putting dangerous balls into the box so it would be nice to have a striker alongside him who can get on the end of it. Idah would be a good rotation option for Bonne so that they both get plenty of football and aren't risking injuries from overplaying. So far from what I've seen of Hemed, he is your standard old player at the end of his career who has lost it and I'll be surprised if he's still here next year - he's definitely not prolific.
Clearly we need a midfielder as well but that will inevitably happen before the end of the window.

And the messiah is more likely to click with Church.
Bowyer likes to play with a mobile hold up striker (Taylor) and another pacy striker that works the channels. He even picked up a winger and converted him to that role (Leko); and now signed Green, another winger, to see if he can be converted to do a striking job.
Watching Idah's performance in the Norwich v Preston game, you can see his movement, positioning, pace and eye for goal is something we've lacked since Karlan Grant was sold.
Idah fits in with Bowyer's game plan, that's plain to see. And Bowyer likes to go for a wild card, someone who offers the unpredictable.
"Following Idah's hat trick for Norwich City against Preston North End on the 4th January 2020, Republic of Ireland Manager Mick McCarthy hinted that Idah may soon earn a full cap, commenting "He might have just got himself one", while working as a pundit for BT Sport's coverage of the match."
Love this bit. “Huddersfield and Charlton have been very active in the transfer window this month as they look to avoid relegation from the Championship”

Anways, hes scored more goals against Preston with his hat trick than 22 other players did over 2 games. Doesn't define him but has an eye for goal.
Hopefully he comes in and does well.
We've never replaced Karlan Grant.

I see he's 19 in a couple of weeks. Certainly Mick McCarthy has noticed him.
Have we?
