In Adam Idah and Troy Parrott (Spurs starlet), Ireland have two very good young forwards.
They have that Obafemi lad from Southampton too

    And Connolly @ Brighton
  • Loan signings are not the end of the world in Jan, if we stay up we won't have a bloated squad full of players that are lower half championship quality. We can then have a whole summer to invest and improve the entire squad
True, but an overhaul of the whole squad is a huge undertaking. SG pulled it off last season, but as he said himself, he would not like to do that again. We were very fortunate in many ways.

This is why I think the aim of bringing in three permanent that are as good or better than what we have in January is important.

Cullen is unlikely to be loaned out again next season. He will be back with WH playing or sold and there will be clubs better placed to attract him. We will need a left sided CH, a defensive midfielder, left back, right back, attacking midfielder, and a centre forward if Taylor stays. Two if he leaves.

That is just for the first team. Oh, and most of our players are soon out of contract. Huge amount of work needs to be done which is why we need to start now, and get it right first time.
  • Another 18 year old forward loan rumour I've had mentioned to me is Folarin Balogun from Arsenal.

Don’t think it’s a totally bad thing if MS is involved in negotiations. Being an ex agent, he will probably know what he’s doing
Let's judge at the end of the window, i'd rather SG running the show after his fantastic track record.
SG is brilliant at spotting talent. Let MS conduct the business side, leaving Steve to do what he does best.
Based on all the players he’s brought in over the past 18 months surely both scouting AND negotiating is what he does best.

Know absolutely nothing about he lad.

That said, I’d take a younger, presumably hungry youngster from a PL side on loan rather than a late 20s loanee from our division/SPL.  So fairly positive, in Gallen we trust with this one.
Especially if we could buy a player now for between £500k - £13m (Gnaudillet / Toney) yet for half the price in the summer
I’ve a feeling we will go in for Toney in the summer if Lyle goes.
Plus everyone else will that fails to leave this league at either end of the table.
There are a number of teams that won’t spend 8m on a player (Millwall not spent more than 1m ever) that will be in this league.  And clearly our chairman has a good relationship with their chairman.  Just a thought that’s all.

Brentford offered £5m plus add-ons for him but was rejected. Obviously very highly rated.
  • We need to replace Gallagher ( Maddison), Leko (green) kayal ( Doherty) is say ad Idah to that and maybe one decent defender, that'll do for me
  • why do we need an inexperienced 18 year old striker when we have a more experienced one in Bonne who should be back soon?
To give us a pacey option up front, even if that’s just coming off the bench. Green’s not an out and out striker and Bonne is more similar to Taylor than Grant - mobile but more of a hold up striker than one who uses out and out pace.
  • why do we need an inexperienced 18 year old striker when we have a more experienced one in Bonne who should be back soon?
What if Bonne has a set back? Or either Taylor, Bonne or Hemed get injured? Is Idah a different type of striker than we already have? Will bringing in a loan for minimal spend allow us to spend more on a midfielder now or more on a striker in the summer?

Id imagine SG & LB have answered all those before approaching Norwich.

  • It is going to be difficult to recruit proven Championship or even League one players as they will expect to go into the starting 11. With the quality of players we have who have just returned from injury or are due to do so soon, we won’t entice players of real quality in this window.
A striker will not displace Taylor, and potentially Bonne when he returns.
Nobody will get in ahead of Cullen, Field, Williams or Pratley.
Maybe a centre half, particularly a tall, strong, ball winning player may get a decent chance at centre back. A new left back may displace Purrington.
Otherwise it is hard to see why a certain standard of player would join us if they are a starter at their own club.
  • A lad I work with is good friends with Ben Godfrey at Norwich (they played together as schoolboys in York) so I’ll try and get some inside info. Is this what it feels like to be ITK?
“Inside info” I see what you did there, very clever. 😉

  • Same person who mentioned JCH told me we are sniffing around Sam Morsy at Wigan. Nothing concrete but definitely interested

Might be a summer job, if Wigan go down for example we may go get him
When we played Wigan earlier this season I said to my son I’d love to have him in our team.

     Injuries.
  • I do want a quality centre back to partner Lockyer for the long term but I don't think now is the time, Oshi, Nabs and Pearce should be just about enough to do the job at hand, even Pratley can play there, the issue is what plays ahead of them as been repeated before, the difference someone like Cullen makes. We need a proper energetic centre mid who can break up play and get the ball forward and a versatile player who can play as an attacking mid or a winger which is Maddison obviously and then a utility front player. That should just be enough.

We don't need full backs, Doughty and Purrington ain't getting us relegated, neither are Solly or Matthews, it's just further up where we need the extra goal or two a game.
  • I think we have been crying out for a proper playmaker for years. Maybe since Andy Reid left. Someone that can consistently create chances and unlock defences. Possibly chip in with a few goals from midfield. Any ideas?

Quite frankly, I can’t get my head around some of the immediate negativity with regard to our transfer targets when they get mentioned on here.

A - none of us are scouts or are working in football.  We think we know a little bi about the game and although I am sure we can all probably recognise good football when we see it, and good players when we see them, none of us know what it’s truly like to see a player play in the context of what goes on in training, their potential, physique, how they carry themselves etc

B - We’re Charlton Athletic trying to buy players in the Jan transfer window within a sustainable budget.  Who are you expecting?  There seems to be a massive disconnect between who people suddenly think we are able to get, and those that we’re likely to get, given the parameters we have to operate in at this time of the season.  The variables are many, ever changing and some beyond our control

C - Gallen’s recruitment given the conditions he has been working too to date, has been nothing short of miraculous.  There will always be the odd players who doesn’t work out, but f*** me, we even got something out of Josh Parker last season who admittedly wasn’t the sort of player you would build your team around, but he played his role in the run in.  With the added impetus of having what seems like a bit more backing under Nimer, he will deliver and I trust him implicitly.

Don’t mean to have a go, but sometimes I wonder what people’s actual concept of what they think we will get is, versus the reality.  Have some faith :-)
Agree with that but there’s a but. Look yourself in the eye and say honestly that you wasn’t expecting someone with a slightly higher profile than an 18 year old Norwich loanee ? I’m not saying that won’t happen but I can’t imagine too many of us not starting to wonder. In Bowyer we trust.

That volume of assists from a player is just ridiculous.

He may be a bit of a penis but my god can that guy play football
Think that appraisal ensures we won’t be signing him.
  • Pretty sure I read somewhere that 80% of those 2017-18 assists were directly for Jack Marriott. Let's get them both and reunite that dream team!

If there is an element of "underwhelmedness" it's that Adam Idah looks like the sort of signing we'd make if Roland was still our owner. Indeed from this article it seems that he was expected to go to a L1 side (Doncaster were after him), I don't see any other Championship sides linked to him.
