  • All the smiling before games, holding kids and clapping each and every fan just feels like something.......Matt Southall would do!
  • I really think that i f we go down, this decision will haunt him for the rest of his  career.
  • He doesn’t get it does he? It’s not about not extending his contract by a month to see out the season, it’s about honouring the contract you have already signed until 30th June.
This. The media seemed to have neglected that aspect as well when reporting it, frustratingly
  • Pointless interview - just PR spin. Says a lot of empty words.

I hope he enjoys the money.

As if he wouldn’t get shit for stopping on the 30th June if he did , there wouldn’t be any of this oh he’s seen out his contract bollox FairPlay he goes with our blessing , it’d rightfully be you fucker you’ve left us in the lurch with 6 games left

  • Disagree. Perfectly within his rights not to play after his contract expires. In fact, he would be mad to. Till then, he should play. If the games go as the previous order, the next game is really key to whether we stay up or not.
  • "Playing for my Country has been an absolute honour this season. Something I always dreamed of but I don't feel it's right that my club now demands things from my dodgy knee, which by the way future clubs, would pass a medical easily." cos I'm Lyle and I can make up the truth.
  • I'd rather just forget about this all and move on to be honest. Get behind the players who will be putting on the shirt and giving everything for us.
  • Selfish cnut and a coward. You leave a club in the position its in that no other club can touch with the crap were dealing with and you just walk away! Money grabbing, no integrity, no respect and no honour... How dare you kiss our badge and say all the right things and then do this... You're no better than Southall. Forgive?? Never... Forget?? Never.

Is it fair to say that he's off your Christmas card list?

    Yes and his birthday too!
  • Trouble is Lyle hasnt anticipated the reaction of the Footballing world outside of Charlton Athletic

Most fans you read on twitter, most ex-players, even non Footballing sportsmen are saying that he should be honouring his contract

He's taking a bit of a risk hoping that where he goes next, he lands on his feet like he did at Wimbledon

Yeah score a few goals and non-Charlton fans will care less about his actions

If he does a Yann Kermorgant though in the sense that he moves to the Premier League and doesnt cope

The fans then question why he was signed in the first place and gets remembered by more fans that he was the bloke who didnt honour his contract

Whether the fans remember him as a god (Clive Mendonca) or a money grabbing selfish twat the only thing out of the two that will be paying his bills in 5-10-15 years time will be this next contract , yes it’s fucking horrible but fuck him and the way it’s gone but that’s the reality of his situation.

Plus and its only a possibility but some opposition defenders may target him deliberately because of what he's said... Silly boy... But you reap what you sew!

I think you may be right. If not physically, I can imagine the opposition will certainly be winding him up verbally.

Short price for a card in his first game!
  • He asked for understanding or for us to understand his thinking.  I do, and I even accept it, as there’s no point in not accepting it.  It doesn’t make it right though.

The injury he had has really impacted his thinking and I will take him at his word for that, because I don’t know what it’s like to be in a profession where something like that can be career ending.

The thing I can’t get my head around, is say we were in this position 12 months ago and his contract was coming to an end and based on the season he had last year, lots of bigger clubs were sniffing around.  Would he then come back and say I’m not going to play the remaining games given the run we were on and where we were in the promotion picture?

I highly doubt it.  It’s all hypothetical I know and there’s been a lot of water under the bridge since last June what with Brentford actually making a bid and Southall/Dutchatelet dicking him around, but for me, we can’t just let footballers picking and choosing which bits of the game and their contracts suit them.  I think the governing bodies may introduce a rule about this moving forward, as I can see it happening all over the place now

Dont think the opposition winding him up would bother him, nor the thought of opposing fans during games heckling him

We've seen in a lot of games that he feeds off that sort of thing and is a better player for it

I might be wrong though but he doesnt seem an overly influenctial player like Jason Pearce though, most of his strength comes from being loved by the fans and getting adulation

Fail to kick start and he's straight away going to lose that

And if he then moves on as a failure both Managers and Players will see him more as a failure and as someone who didnt honour their contract compared with what he can do
  • I read it, didn’t believe it, mainly because Lyle doesn’t believe a word of what he’s saying around his thought process, nice bits of theatre to make it sound like a hard decision, when it was one he had made in March

Yes, if only he had a professional adviser who understands the wider football world and the bigger picture, instead of seeking and negotiating the move on his own.
  • I'd never begrudge a player moving for a life changing contract as I and I'm sure all of us would do the same in a heartbeat.

It's just a massive pisstake with the position we are in and our best player refusing to play the games he is contracted to play. It's basically a 'fck you charlton, like I give a shit what happens to your club'.

I see people also saying if it was a normal season being played out, would he stop playing with a few games to go because he is scared to get injured and tbh yes I think he would come out with the same excuse.
  • Ryan Fraser will soon be out of contract, with a number of big clubs all targeting him. I don't hear him downing tools
