Footballers are privileged individuals fulfilling dreams that 1000s of kids would love to and are paid well to do just that. No he might not be on 20k a week, but I'm sure he earns a lot more than most of us. He should honor his contract in what is a very unusual situation. Even if that means playing upto 30th June. I'm genuinely dissapointed with him, I think he has really let himself and us fans down
I'm sure that your disappointment will keep him awake at night. As a professional footballer he has a limited time to earn money. He is now at a crucial time in his career where he can obtain a contract that will secure his future. His affiliation with Charlton is less than two years. Ours, as fans, may be 10/20/30/40/50/60 years. Is it any wonder that he may see things differently? I really think that people should get some perspective. I, as a Charlton fan of many years, do not want to see us relegated, but I can fully understand why Lyle does not want to risk his future in these exceptional circumstances. If the future had been concluded under normal circumstances then I have no doubt that Lyle would have been busting a gut, as he had in every other game, to secure our survival.
I am not expecting these comments to keep him awake at night, I just think it is unacceptable, almost irrelevamt to his affiliation to Charlton in the scheme of things. He may not have busted a gut under normal circumstnaces. I would have siad just turning up would have been a bonus but it isn't a 'bonus' as he is under contract. I thnk the Bauer situation a poignant comparison
Very disappointing situation, he must have a contract already lined up. If he didn't surely scoring 6/7 more goals in our last 9 games and his value would rise even further.
It's weird with Lyle. He could have just said that he was uncomfortable coming back with Covid still about and that he didn't think it was right to restart, or that the precautions aren't sufficient. We would have been annoyed but you can't argue with it. I think that he wants to be able to still train to keep in shape ahead of his magical new deal though, and I also do think that Lyle is a few fairly unpleasant things but a liar isn't really one of them, so he's said the real reason he's not playing. Bowyer's then publicised the reason because he wants to convinced Lyle to change his mind, either through pressure and shame from the media or the outpourings from the fanbase. I don't think either will work on Lyle though. I do find it interesting as well that Bowyer doesn't seem to bothered about Solly needing to 'finish what he starts'; guess he's not that bothered about being without Solly. He should be though, because the idea of Adam Matthews playing two games a week for two months is ridiculous. It's all a big mess.
Has anything come out about other teams having this issue yet though? Or are there just no other teams who have players they want to keep on expiring deals?
I get the feeling Bow and LT have fallen out over talks. Where Bowyer would usually have used Covid as a smokescreen I think he has told the truth.
Lyle seemed to be an important cog in the outstanding team moral Bowyer has engendered and my main worry is the effect his decision will have on his team mates

I think you could be right.
Funny how he mentioned in that interview the other week that Bowyer is the only manager he hasn't argued with. Sounds like that might have changed.
Also, he did point out in that recent instagram live interview that his injury was in fact 2 weeks before the international duty but he played on and made it worse whilst in Montserrat.
Given that Taylor has been able to talk to other clubs since January, I’m a little surprised that his agent hadn’t already secured a binding pre-contract agreement. Maybe he has and there’s a ‘get out’ clause for the new club if the player sustains a serious injury.
If there is no such agreement, Taylor’s timing is unfortunate from his financial point of view, as clubs are going to be paying substantially lower wages in the current climate. Even in the Premier League, most teams lose money in a normal season - now they have the broadcasters’ rebate (a minimum £330 million) to contend with, as well as the loss of matchday income for all or most of next season. Sky, BT and the overseas broadcasters also won’t be happy with the absence of any atmosphere in the stadiums and are likely to seek a reduction for next season as well.
As for the Championship, the division is a financial basket case and you have to wonder how long wealthy owners are going to be able to keeping pumping in money in the current economic climate. The strong likelihood is that wage levels will be forced down, albeit not to same extent as transfer fees.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Taylor’s new club and, especially, his agent, were urging him to ‘down tools’, although I doubt that you’d find any evidence of that, given that procuring a breach of contract is actionable. Perhaps we could get Southall’s imaginary lawyers to pursue a claim against them both for loss of the chance of staying in the Championship - or maybe not...
Unless Lee thinks there’s a remote chance of a change of heart (which seems very unlikely), I imagine he’ll ask Taylor to stay away from Sparrow’s Lane. The odds are already massively stacked against us without undermining morale further.
Having stewed on this yesterday and actually listened to what Lee Bowyer said I'm pretty pissed off with Taylor
To go to the extreme, what is the point of contracts if players can openly do this?
Trying my hardest to be objective, I get why he wants to go, he has always been the type of character you love if he plays for you and despise if he plays against you. As a professional footballer you absolutely have to honour the contract you signed and I doubt this is smoke and mirrors from Bowyer and Taylor, what's the point?
The ownership can be blamed and most of our problems can be blamed correctly on the owners but regardless if you are fit and being paid by the club you cannot refuse to play, that is ridiculous. Really disappointed in Solly if that's what he has done as well but I didn't pay as much attention to his situation and Davis has been about as much use as tits on a fish since coming in but I understand if he would rather not travel and stay in a London hotel or commute
I'm actually surprised Lyle didn't avoid much of the anger and disappointment being directed at him, by simply saying that he's concerned about catching Covid-19, rather than trying to avoid injury in order to feather his nest elsewhere !
99% of us would do exactly the same as Lyle's doing, were we in the same situation. It’s a profession after all.
Still gutted though.
If I refused to do my work because it might hamper a move to another company, i'd be immediately cut loose.
Now that would actually benefit Lyle and in my opinion us as you remove bad energy in the form of a want away player that isn't willing to see out their contract.
Same goes for Solly and maybe less so, but also Davis.
Similar to the Scott Parker situation , a player that would have gone on to be regarded as a bit of a Charlton great will now be remembered for the way he left. Curbs fell out with Parker at the time and LB has possibly done the same. I can't see any way back for LT now , he accused Southall of throwing him under the bus , Lee has thrown him under the steam roller.
Also, he did point out in that recent instagram live interview that his injury was in fact 2 weeks before the international duty but he played on and made it worse whilst in Montserrat.
no he didn't
You seem adamant, so I must be wrong.
Could've sworn he said it happened 2 weeks before the Swansea game.

Not really sure what reaction he is expecting? For a man who likes the limelight I imagine he will get some pelters.

This is actually something I was thinking about yesterday. I know we’re in a crazy situation at the moment, but doesn’t it set a very dangerous precedent for the future if players can say “I have time left to run on my current contract, but I’m not going to play in any more games for my club in case I get injured and jeapordise some future contract that I might be able to get elsewhere”? Shouldn’t we make it clear that this is not an acceptable position to take at Charlton Athletic?
Gutted to lose Lyle. However, it's too easy to pin it all on him, or any individual. Football economics are morally bankrupt - a microcosm of the wider world. (Apologies, a bit preachy.)
Honesty doesn’t pay , he should have coasted the 2-3 games till the end of June ....
And left a hero
then taken shit for not seeing out the rest of the season
No. You can't really assume that. If he had come out and said I will play out the end of my contract but have a move lined up on 1st July, I do not believe people would be half as pissed. We're pissed because he's not even seeing out his pre-agreed contract, never mind the season!
Lyle was always going to leave, I know I’m going to get pelters for this, but with all that’s going on in the world at the moment and having known 4 people taken, in just meh whatever, it’s not important in the scheme of things.
Pre Covid I’d probably be spitting feathers, starting threads galore, and up in arms, I just feel lucky to still be around at the moment.
Doing an ooh ah, yes we’ve probably got a 90% chance of being relegated without Lyle, of course I’d rather have him playing for us, but in really not surprised, or bothered as much as I used to be.
Wembley May 2019, seems a long way away, even if I did miss Bauer’s goal by drinking too much in the green man!
Don’t get too stressed out by this people, we’ve always been a selling club, players come and go, don’t get too attached to them, its their career and living, don’t give them abuse, we’re better than that.
I think almost to a man every poster has said that they dont begrudge Taylor going & realise that he is looking for a big payday with his next move. As you say, players come & go and nowdays most players move on after 2 or 3 years.
BUT
What is sickening everyone is the flagrant disregard to honouring a contract. I didn't think for a minute that he'd sign the months extension that the EFL have mooted, but I did expect him to play until June 30th.
He has shown that he is just as bad as Parker, Grant & Defoe. There is more to life than money. Stuff like decency & integrity.
I'd argue you need to be extremely financially driven to reach the top of the game, very few players, if any at the top are on sensible money.
I think all footballers are money grabbers and why not, it's a short career and most won't get a proper job after it.
But YOU MUST HONOUR YOUR CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS. If you don't what's the point in either Contracts or Transfer Windows
Is Taylor still training? Surely having him about the place, with his ‘i’m too good for this club’ attitude, can’t be good for team morale.
If I was Bowyer I'd tell him to piss off & not to turn up ever again. Let him sit at home for the next 3 months. Seriously, we haven't even got this season back up again & he's thinking about next season. He might find the new one doesnt start until September. Lots of time to drop jars of beetroot onto your foot, fall through a glass coffee table or cut your hand peeling an orange.
Yes what a punishment!! That's probably exactly what he wants. Sit at home, rest, reduce your chances of catching Covid, sign a 20k a week contract in August (or whenever players can sign).
He's quite likely only turning up to training because if he doesn't then he'll be fined.
The window will officially open on June 10, 2020, though many deals will not become official until July 1.
However, due to a quirk of the calendar, this summer the Premier League will actually trade for an extra 24 hours compared to the rest of Europe. Aug. 31 is a public holiday in England this year, so the window will close at 5 p.m. BST (noon ET) on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The EFL has not yet announced its plans, but it is expected to fall into line with the top division having also closed early in recent seasons.
Damages for breach. Earnings and potential earnings.
We won't pay him.
He won't care.
Lyle you were, for 18 months, a top man in my eyes. You've just lost that respect.
Play games until 30 June then you are free to choose. By admitting you won't give your all in the meantime, another little part of my love for this game died in front of my very eyes.
This is right now, as close as I have ever been to giving up on Charlton and modern day football.
RIP CAFC. I'm beginning to see no way back for us.
Nonsense. Far better players than Taylor have left us.
We'll get a new owner and even if it's in league one, we'll move on.
Could be wrong but I don’t think @supaclive is at breaking point because of Taylor leaving, (although it’s likely to be the straw that broke the camel’s back) but rather because of the crappy way people conduct themselves, the game being all about money and the fans being left to suffer the consequences.
The greed is at maximum levels now.....for a bunch of blokes who run around trying to put a ball in a net. Not exactly saving lives is it? Range Rovers, luxury flats. It’s all a total turn off particular after reflecting for the last three months on what really matters.
Spot on .
Agreed. Happy to (rightly) criticise Southall when not honouring his own contract. Would be 'interesting' if he did end up at Boro if they stay up and we don't after he didn't play on for us...........

Nah, would be very unlikely. I had a sick day once and was offered full pay, I insisted my firm would be better off keeping the money.
