If you were upset with how he was running the club, but see he's totally changed how the club is run in line with your expectations, what message are you sending out by continuing to stay away?
An ominous start to the day when my season ticket failed to work. After a stressful few minutes I was allowed in via the big red metal exit door after much discussion by stewards on their field radios! On the plus side my daughter was able to attend with me.
To the match: I posted in the preview that Southend would be a good benchmark for where we really are and for the first 30 minutes or so they were competitive and gave us some problems. I didn't appreciate quite how big (and effective) a lump Nile Ranger was before yesterday and we owed a lot to the excellent Jason Pearce and his courageous blocks in particular. Ricky Holmes seemed to be everywhere helping De Silva out defensively and being involved and instrumental in most of our attacking moments as were Billy Clarke and Kashi. Bauer and Solly also held the line well defensively during this period. Amos made one vital save with his right foot which was the closest Southend came to scoring despite their pressure. 0-0 at halftime was about right on the balance of play but it was an absorbing rather than boring 0-0.
In the second half we came out seemingly with more intent to get forward. I also suspect that the likes of Ranger, not being fully match fit, began to run out of gas. Around the hour mark Chris Solly burst forward down the right and swung over a delightful pinpoint cross which Big Josh met with his head on the full to almost burst the net. A few minutes later Rickyyyyyy Holmes received a well deserved reward for all his endeavour, despite a running battle with the referee who carded him harshly after he appeared to be fouled, when a well placed cross shot from the left nestled in the right hand corner of the net.
At this point our dominance was such that one felt we could go on to get three or four but, Charlton being Charlton, we took our feet off their throats and once again Southend came into it with the introduction of ex Millwall (spit) Theo Robinson possibly being a factor in this. They scored the inevitable goal with about 10 minutes of normal time left and could easily have equalised but for some desperate last ditch defending.
Somehow we hung on despite Gavin Ward finding 5 minutes of added time from nowhere! An excellent result against what looked to be a decent outfit at this level. Hopefully we will have the legs to produce more of the same against Wigan on Tuesday night!
Just to remind everyone that even if we win the league this season, all it would mean is it's taken four years to take us back to (slighty lower than) where we started, at the cost of massive disillusionment and a whole load of miserable weekends. I'm pleased we're winning, and I hope we go up, but I don't believe that Duchatelet has changed anything like people are saying. My objection to the regime has never been primarily about results. If we manage to keep a strong first XI throughout the season it'll be more through luck than good squad planning. I've not been to the Valley this season, and I won't be going (excepting supporters trust game next week) until he sells. The moment he does, I'm back like a shot, and I think there are plenty of others who feel the same.
What a great little player Chris Solly is.Year after year he constantly performs to a high standard,he rarely has a bad game.Today I thought he was excellent, busy and productive and what a peach of a cross to Big Josh who couldn't miss.
Regards
C.Solly.
Still the best crosser of a ball within the club - perhaps he could give lessons to Ricky Holmes in return fro lessons on shooting?
Crazy game but entertaing...as usual we made a meal out of nothing...they were just a hoof ball outfit and it was a good job we were up when their goal happened.....slicker teams will unlock us.
I didn't see too much hoof ball and slick isn't really a term most would use in the third tier of English football. But I suppose we all see different things and have different opinions.
I thought Southend started out with hoofball which, as @redlanered said to me at the time, could be a way to play against us as it bypasses our rather good midfield, but then played much more on the deck.
Thanks... What i said, good to see someone else actually watched the game.
Fucking shame you can't read then. I didn't see too much hoof ball Is what I wrote. Have a day off Chippster and let others enjoy the moment.
Who said i was talking about you... Calm down you big girls blouse and mind your appalling language. And ditto re enjoy the moment if you dont agree with what i say dont comment on it. After all i dont agrree with anything you ever say but dont need to comment everytime.
I think those who are staying away from The Valley as a protest against Roland are rather undermining their cause.
Roland has an English manager in who appears to be targeting players he knows and likes. He's put together a competitive side who are, at times, tearing teams apart.
If you were upset with how he was running the club, but see he's totally changed how the club is run in line with your expectations, what message are you sending out by continuing to stay away? "Mess up at your own financial expense and we'll never forgive you"
Quite happy with my decision, was never about results for me.
really like clarke - very quick brain and feet - think marshall and reeves will replace caskey and fosu and when they do we will absolutely destroy teams - b very surprised if we don't go up this year
Reeves will have to go some to replace Forster-Caskey IMHO

I'm sure Roland imagines he can take the cost of his mistakes back by selling players or from the next owner, either of which will be to the detriment of the club. Very unlikely he intends it to be at his expense.
In any event, he believes he hasn't made any mistakes - that was all other people.

My cause it is not undermined. Now that's partially because I'm no longer sure how I'd even describe "my cause" or indeed whether there is one.
Yes, of course, it seems like the football is better. But that's not the be all and end all of a football club and how it fits in with its community. The club's only executive director likes to call us "customers", well I now like to call the club a business. As a business, it's not one I want to contract with for vast numbers of reasons. The list of how this so-called commercial enterprise has disrespected its consumer base is huge and in many respects beyond belief.
Even some vile, utterly obnoxious companies would, sensibly, draw the line at getting security to beat up its customers or describe them in vulgar derogatory terms. The club's actions place it on the same rung of the business ladder as loan sharks, drug dealers and pimps. The two Belgians are utterly untrustworthy and deserving of only contempt.

I want the Belgians gone but your post is utterly and completely over the top.

Except the 'change' in the teams fortune is in no part attributable to RD - he has even admitted it himself that he doesnt know why the team is now playing 'well'.
Small question.....when we only have one proven striker and a key game Tuesday night, why did Sir Gobby leave Josh on playing left half when Dodoo was thrown on?
He was clearly knackered.
Because he doesn't trust or rate Dodoo & we have feck all else options !!
Not been yet this season but delighted with yet another win. What Danny Murphy said about our stay away fans "it's all about results," is probably right for the vast majority. But there are still many principled Addicks who will not return until Duchatelet departs.
Find it sad that still certain people band the negative drum. Facts are we are second in the league, team are playing some of the best football for years and the fans are getting behind the team. Amazing that the odd person can still focus on negatives. Embarrassing.
A thoroughly enjoyable game. It was nice to see a good, football playing team come to the Valley and see Charlton come away with a deserved win. They had the better chances of the opening stages but we really grew into the game and had a spell in the second half where we looked untouchable. I was worried in the latter stages of the game that we might throw it away but the nerves were nowhere near as pronounced as last season every time we managed to get into the lead.
I'll start with the many postives:
Dasilva looked brilliant at left back. The amount of times we just ran in-front of the right winger and took the ball of him was ridiculous. He is very intelligent for a lad of his age. His running down the left once again was brilliant, especially when he managed to get the overlap.
Kashi was everywhere again, even if he did get away with some very casual passes at times that could have seen us punished in other games. Nice to see him pop up with a shot as well.
There always seemed to be one of our players (mostly Pearce) threw to throw themselves in-front of a shot/cross when it was needed. This team wants to win and it does not want to concede. Pearce deserves a special mention as he was fantastic.
Solly was solly, brilliant pinpoint cross for the first goal.
Magennis kept getting on the end of things and was also brilliant at his defensive duties. That could be said for much of the team though, they were always running back to help out. There was no standing around waiting for the ball to come to them.
Holmes really is a step above most in this division, his goal was from a player high on confidence and whenever he gets around the area you just know he could bang one in, which creates more space for others as they come out to block his shots. His corners were dogshite for the most part however, as were JFCs.
Amos did most for the most part.
There is a new ticket office in the car park and there wasn't a huge queue.
We are 12 points clear of relegation (something not to be underestimated with this lot in charge).
We are second in the league and have won 5 games already this season. We only won 14 in the whole of last season.
Some negatives:
I hope Amos improves on his coming for the ball at crosses. There goal was a great header but there were other times where he just wasn't confident enough in coming for the ball and the defence got him out of trouble.
Some of the decision making when we were on the break, especially from Fosu was poor. There were a couple of times we could have set-up a teammate for some great scoring opportunities but chose the wrong option (usually to shoot after an exhausting run). But then again if Fosu had that pace, skill and an impeccable footballing brain he wouldn't be in league one!
Overall I really enjoyed it and cannot wait for Tuesday. The atmosphere is getting better as the wins stack up too. Last season I left after each game wondering if my dad was punishing me by buying me a half season ticket and dreading the next match - this season so far is the polar opposite.
He's great. He gets everywhere and has a brilliant touch. Yesterday, I was constantly thinking, "why did the Bradford fans think he was so shite?". I can see him becoming a firm fans favourite.
Small question.....when we only have one proven striker and a key game Tuesday night, why did Sir Gobby leave Josh on playing left half when Dodoo was thrown on?
He was clearly knackered.
Josh plays that position or has done with Northern Ireland.

Probably because we needed his height, both as an outlet upfront and defending corners. Holmes was on a booking so made sense to me.
Robinson has said that Holmes was ill and that's why he took him off. Personally would have kept Josh on up front because defending a 1 goal lead late on you need a forward to hold the ball up and relieve a bit of pressure. Doodoo didn't hold the ball up at all. Should have replaced Holmes with Konsa in my view to become tighter and more defensive. Resting Josh will be hard when he's our only decent forward, something that was blindingly obvious when we failed to get in an adequate replacement. Just hope he stays fit.

Or your completely missing the point (possibly deliberately). From what I've seen on here everyone is backing the team and Want a them to do well. As we have all done through the protests etc. I dont see anyone that isn't glad that we are doing well and playing good football.
That doesn't mean everything is okay at the football club. Support the team not the regime is a true as ever. For me certain people have done too much damage to be forgiven so quickly after a few wins. Certain actions and words need to be made up for.
I support the team as I always have done. I'm loving the football and us winning. But a few wins won't change my opinion that they aren't good for the club. It won't undo 3 and a half years of hurt and damage.
Maybe it's a start of a longer process. I'm not sure.
First game since Fleetwood. Back in UK for mothers funeral.Thought it was a good performance. Impressed with Clarke and Holmes. Dasilva is a great little player as well. Shame about crowd but understand people's viewpoint about owners

Reeves is a number 10 JFC is playing DM
Ok so he will be competing with Clarke then. He won't get a look in currently.

Can play off the right. He played there a fair bit at MK. So could well come in for Fosu when he's fit. Of course Marshall will probably take that place when he's fit but expect that to take longer.
In our formation the 3 interchange a lot and we don't really okay wingers they are more like inside forwards so think Reeves will be good there. Competition for those places is good.

Read certain comments, this is a post match thread, not one in which people want to dispute the gate, the club selling players, protests last season, why not look at where we are in the league? How well the team are playing?? How well we have done in the transfer market??? Like a broken record, it's sad and boring.
Small question.....when we only have one proven striker and a key game Tuesday night, why did Sir Gobby leave Josh on playing left half when Dodoo was thrown on?
He was clearly knackered.
I think if we'd held the lead another five minutes or so he would have come off. But at 2-1 we needed his work rate and his height both in defending set pieces and as an option to go long because Southend were pressing.
On the Dodoo thing, his touch hasn't looked great, I agree, but he also looks rusty and like he's still learning our system. He's been with us for a week, and I don't think he played much of a role in preseason, so we need to give him time to settle, to get fit and match sharp, and to learn the system.
We're also spoiled by the fact that we have a lot of really technically gifted players for this level. Kashi, JFC, Clarke, Holmes, and Fosu can all zip it around, absolutely ping balls at each other and know the ball will be controlled. I also think Josh has a better touch than he's give credit for. Last year especially, given he was often isolated or just had it lumped up to him, he didn't look great technically. I think this season he's looked much better because of the football we play. It's noticeable with him that when the ball goes forward it oftentimes sticks.

Great game, great goals. Good atmosphere. Nothing to add to comments above.
The attendance should make those who think people will soon come back in numbers wake up and smell the coffee though. There were under 11,000 home supporters for a sixth straight home win. How many Tuesday night? Will the gate even make five figures? It may be a stretch if Wigan bring about 300.
Yes Airman it does look like there are numbers in the 1000s who are prepared to stay away while the Belgians are in charge. They said they are staying away and they are. Huge respect to them, someone said earlier in the week it's probably only a few hundred
Nahhhh. Most of them aren't there because of the division and lack of success. Guarantee you that if Roland took Charlton to the prem those seats wouldn't be empty.
Season ticket sales and average attendance were much higher in the recent League 1 seasons before Roland.
Second part of course if we're in the Prem we'll sell more tickets.
yes but for a lot, a second helping of league 1 was too much to bear and was made worse because it was the result of a nonsense belgium bloke's experiment. However, and as i've always maintained, now the experiment is over (which it was after fraye was sacked), the quickest way for him to leave after relegation was to get up and then sell up - got called beardface and stuff last year by a variety of museum bore type characters last year for saying it but that is my belief - a war of making the club unmanageable was only ever going to end in disaster - with a bloke that rich, that was never the answer so my advice would be to encourage as many as possible to get back down there, enjoy the games and just forget who owns the club. I think the number that are genuinely not going due to principle at rd's ownership is very small - just the real militants who would prefer to think of themselves as martyr rather than enjoy themselves - for others its an excuse to not go - probably to please her indoors.
