Started slowly and grew into it. Thought the first half was pretty dull if I am honest. Southend pressed high and we didn't really get to grips with it. Given some of the names in their team I was expecting a bit more from the seasiders. Attack wise they were very one dimensional.
Two good goals, lovely cross from Solly for the first.
Still not convinced by Amos. He doesn't seem to communicate with his back 4 at all.
Pearce had a big game and was my mom. Didn't happen for Fosu and his decision making is poor at times. Expect him to make way once Marshall is fit. Would have switched him for Dodoo on around 70mins.
Kashi got away with a couple of "ball dwelling" moments today but even though he wasn't as good as he has been was still a class act. He is going to be key for us this season.
Still concerned what will happen if we get injuries upfront or at full back.
Looking forward to Wigan on Tuesday. Should be a good test.
Have to mention the crowd, given the run of form, numbers wise it was poor and suspect it will be even lower on Tuesday.
Pearce was excellent and both full backs were very good. Clarke just makes the team tick and Holmes is far too good for this league. Didn't think Kashi was particularly good for the first half an hour but he grew into the match, Amos needs better communication but is an adequate stopper and Fosu has to improve his decision making at certain times. Overall, though, they're minor concerns and it was a good win against a well organised outfit with some quality players. Excellent management from Robinson to bring Dodoo on for Holmes and move Magennis to a wide position, gave us an outlet in the final few minutes of the game to relieve pressure.
I thought Pearce was MOTM today. Superb performance.
I felt that there wasn't a lot between the two sides in the first half but in the second half we showed our quality. What an excellent two goals we scored. That cross from Solly was just begging to be buried by Magennis and the man of the moment caught it brilliantly. Bang, no chance for the keeper.
And what a way to win the match. No other player in this division can do what Holmes can do. He's a match winner and we're very lucky to have him. Unstoppable shot.
Southend deserved a goal as they certainly gave us a game. Best side we've come up against in my opinion.
First home game for me this season and very entertaining too. Like the movement and pace.being shown by the midfield.
Peace was a lion heart in the first half and Ricky upped the tempo at around the hour mark. Southend suddenly look frazzled and Fosu put in a peach of a cross which big Josh just missed out on.
Both goals were very good indeed for differing reasons. A bullet header after a pin point cross followed by a Holmes special. Keep them coming Ricky and practice those corners.
Special mention for Clarke. What a clever player with fast feet. His link up play is excellent.
Make no mistake, we would've been lucky to draw that match last season. Southend were good but we were able to hold them off, wear them down and pick them off when they tired.
Played well in patches but felt Southend could have snatched a draw. Holmes and Solly played well and Fosu looks dangerous but needs to improve his decision making.
I felt Da Silva lacked cover and he was left exposed on occasions which teams will exploit on that side.
Have seen Amos play twice and he's looked suspect in both games - very flappy on crosses and I can't imagine this inspires confidence in the defence.
Our corners were fairly hopeless - the best cross of the day was the peach of a ball from Solly to set up the first goal.
An enjoyable game and Southend were pretty well organised.
That was a hard earned three points. Southend are well organised and not without flair. I couldn't really see the breakthrough coming today. Fantastic cross and great header by Josh. Ricky's goal was just pure Ricky. He's an absolute gem of a player. Love watching him. Thought Kashi was skating on thin ice early on a few times today. Not quite up to his high level of quality although he grew into the match. Didn't quite happen for Fosu either. Not through lack of effort but just too many poor decisions and what he tried didn't come off. Think Dodoo should have replaced Fosu on about 70 minutes. Brown set Southend up to press us high up the pitch and it worked. 2 - 1 was just about right but it could have been 2 - 2 quite easily. Starting to look like we will be top six or damned close. Still don't think we are ruthless enough to be top two. We won't keep too many clean sheets and you can't outgun every team. Chuffed to be sitting second though. We are a very tidy team and the best team we've had to watch for years and I mean Curbishley years.
Joint top scorers in the league...
Yeah I know. I just don't see us grinding out those 1 - 0's away from home. Take your point though.
Maybe not, but there could be quite a few 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 wins this season.
They were well supported and that deserves a mention, although they sang that our support was poor, but is really wasn't...fans were engaged enthusiastically and reactive from all areas of the Valley. However Southend have been injury hit, and players were getting back into it, and were basically not a settled side. However they have a canny manager, and enough individual players to give us something to think about, they were competitive and the late goal gave us a problem.
I say all this about Southend because yet again, faced with a series of different challenges today we were still too good for them. We were unplayable at times, and as a team we were going to find a way through one way or another, so despite a very respectable display by the opposition, Charlton were always going to be able to dig enough out to prevail.
Southend had done their homework, knew what we had to offer, and tried to make things difficult for us and to nullify us. In the first half an hour, or even the first half altogether they were able to keep Holmes quiet and have a relatively tight rein on big Josh, but it is an example of what I mean when I say that both of those players scored because they were prepared to overcome early difficulties and show to the Southend players that they were proper footballers and especially winners.
A great entertaining game overall actually, enterprise all over the pitch where every player was able to make a contribution to the result, nobody got a win bonus today on the back of the effort of anybody else.
The goal we let in was criminal mind you, a free header quite low down from a corner, but overall Amos was decent, even having to deal with some pressure moments caused by ourselves. Pearce v Ranger was a great battle, Bauer stepped up towards the end of the game when we had points to protect, I thought da Silva was once again excellent (he can pick a pass) and Solly put the first goal on a plate for Magennis. A goal that was at a 'good height' for their keeper, but so powerful it was a lovely old fashioned fans favourite header, reminded me of a few scored by Ron Saunders for us back in the day.
Holmes goal was because he is supreme at this level, for such a hurry scurry player, so twisty and turny, and so tricksy, his finish was ice cold slide rule stuff, look on his works ye mighty of this division...and despair.
Kashi, Clarke and JFC are a central midfield of such quality they define the teamwork of the side. if not one...then the other.
I thought Clarke would be inconsistent, so far he is not, I thought JFC would be a diva, he is one of the most willing players we have to help out others, and Kashi is Kashi, plays like the hinge of the team, dictating this way and that. Fosu was quieter that usual, but he occupied the Southend players well, and played the perfect ball to Solly to set up the goal.
And we had a big Dodoo too.
Great three points, rub on the liniment and re assemble on Tuesday.
Make no mistake, we would've been lucky to draw that match last season. Southend were good but we were able to hold them off, wear them down and pick them off when they tired.
First half I thought Southend were as good if not better than us. Our defense looked vulnerable and although our passing game looked good there was no tip to the spear. Worthy winners after the second half performance however. Southend looked alright - was that a full-strength team they put out?

Clarke was stand out player for me he really is a very good footballer, intelligent, strong and great vision, the mag goal wasn't just about the solly cross (which was superb) but the cross field pass from Dasilva to fosu was brilliant the pass to solly was perfect and then the cross and finish rounded it off
Ricky Holmes is high on confidence and it showed in his finish
We do switch off though and let teams put us under pressure and we need to stop doing that
Last week got me back in the mood for all things charlton as I really enjoyed what I saw in and around the players it certainly has a happier feel , I think bowyer And jacko are a big improvement on bringing what it means to be a charlton player , I also think we have a steel that bowyer used to have in abundance running through the team
I don't think I will ever sing robinsons name not take to him as I just don't like him , but he is doing a great job the players Like him and he is setting us out correctly and making the right changes during the game
It's good to be back and it's good to not be consumed by the negativity that surrounds the club when protesting there's a difference this year long may it last
Like this team, lots of players comfortable on the ball, we are a bit small and may get bullied by a few teams in this league but it is enjoyable to watch us play again. Clarke is looking like a great signing
A decent match and performance, some of our passing and attacking play is superb, for the first time in a long time, indeed ever, I think we've got the best footballing team in the division
I do slightly worry about our defending though, not the CBs but the shield in front of them, as in the first half we were cut open a bit too easily in midfield a few times, and I still worry about corners a bit. Southend are decent team though, I expect them to be fighting for the playoffs.
In terms of injuries, it's worth noting that we've started this season without two of out main signings, Reeves and Marshall, and still have Page and Lennon to come back
Crazy game but entertaing...as usual we made a meal out of nothing...they were just a hoof ball outfit and it was a good job we were up when their goal happened.....slicker teams will unlock us.

(1) Who are these slicker teams (2) Are there enough of them in League One to pin us back?

Was akin to Jay Dasilva / Millwall when he made his cameo today

Promising signs. Forty games to go.

2-1
Holmes (6' minutes), Thompson (74' minutes og) ?
Ricky Holmes is high on confidence and it showed in his finish

Poor marking for their goal but generally the defence were superb yet again although Amos scares me
Clarke, Holmes and Pearce the standouts for me.
Long may this continue
