This first 11 eleven is as good as we have had in a while, main difference between now and previous seasons we seem to be getting fairly lucky with injuries fingers crossed it continues.
Having a quality defensive midfielder with good legs (kashi) makes so much difference , I know every one is kissing his ass this season but he really is quality.
A very good result against a hard working and well organized Southend team. It would be great if we could follow it up with another 3 points against Wigan on Tuesday night.
I really believe that with a bit of luck on the injury front if we are there or thereabouts come Xmas automatic promotion will be very much on the cards.
Two brilliant goals and we were cruising but being Charlton we had to make things difficult and in the end we were hanging on. I though DeSilva was brilliant as was Solly. Three more points , no injuries and second in the league - Happy Days
We uh, we look pretty, pretty good so far this season. Things didn't quite click for us in the first half, and yet still had some really good passages of play. But in that second half we had a stretch of about 20 minutes where we were absolutely unplayable.
Conceded a sloppy corner to let them back in it, but did well to see the game out.
Josh and Ricky top scorers with three each. Both were excellent today. Pearce was absolutely immense.
Want to give a special mention for Bauer and Clarke though. Bauer's performance may go overlooked because Pearce got in the way of everything, but he (Bauer) was so calm, so composed, cut balls out, won it back on the deck, an all around really good performance. As for Clarke, he was absolutely everywhere. He is brilliant at finding space. He had a great run, then a great ball (assist) for Holmes' goal. He is also really good at dropping back to fill gaps when Holmes or Fosu bomb forward. He is such a wonderfully gifted, and also incredibly smart footballer.
Last little mention for the little left back Jay DaSilva. Thought he was excellent today. Hope he remembers to take McGlashan out of his back pocket before Southend get on the bus. DaSilva reminds me a lot of Kyle Walker-Peters, who is only about a year older than him. But at the U-20 World Cup KWP was excellent. Both are small, but they're tough, they're strong, they're hard to knock off the ball, they read the game well, and they're very, very comfortable with the ball at their feet. DaSilva is going to play for England one day, and I could well see him playing for them a lot.
That's now four wins on the bounce in the league. Bring on Wigan.
That was a battle I thought. Southend were no slouches. A very good win for us. We picked it up when we needed to but let them back into the game similar to last week. We were cruising then but one lack of concentration led to a nervy last 10 minutes or so.
I thought Jason Pearce was immense today. Most of the team were solid. I thought Fosu blew a bit hot and cold and some of his decision making was a bit poor. Amos, Solly, Bauer and Da Silva all solid. Kashi was immense as usual. Ricky picked it up in the 2nd half and showed what he is made of. He's a handful. Clarke played well as did Jake F-C. A couple of unsung heroes there I think. Big Mag was a handful as usual and got his goal.
What is there not to like. 2nd in the table and looking good. Long may it continue.
Very decent performance, although Southend put us under pressure the same way Oldham did. The difference this season is that we can play our way out tight situations rather than desperately hoofing it. Kashi is a calming presence. Quality goals. Magennis has won me round. We could have scored more, and for all of their huffing and puffing and balls pumped into the box, Southend rarely looked like scoring.
Good win today! Hard fought, a little bit of that our making by standing off. Thought Holmes, Clarke & DaSilva were very good but I thought forster-caskey was quite poor.
On the whole, good team performance but imo need to keep focused for the whole 90 minutes. COYR!
My first home game for about a year and very impressed.
Southend were strong and well organised and tough to beat but we beat them.
Worry we are too lightweight and lack a real striker. Clarke very skilful but maybe a luxury in League 1. Da Silva strong going forward but dodgy moments in defence. Pearce immense.
Overall a great game to watch. Wish they would get rid of the kids waving flags, embrassing, mascots and sort out the beer but cant blame the players for that.
Good performance overall, players playing for the badge and each other, perhaps we were a couple of yards to deep at times but 2 quality goals and 3 more points. Pearce and Clarke standouts again. COYA
Just got back. That was my first game of the season, and I can immediately sense that we'll be big players in the division this year.
The overwhelming thing I'm taking away from today is the players' body language. No moaning; no messing about; no disinterest - everyone played for each other. It was very refreshing to see that. That was certainly, in terms of homogeneity, the best I've seen since probably the League One promotion under Powell.
Even the players who were quiet still had decent games. It was great to see the new boys, and even better to see Kashi, who is like a new signing. He runs the ship and runs it well, despite a couple of mistakes. Fosu has the movement of a constant threat; Holmes on the other side was as good as ever; Clarke though for me was excellent - working hard; playing the right passes; and epitomising generosity of spirit. Magennis was interested and took the goal beautifully. Forster-Caskey was like a Rolls Royce - smooth, understated, and did all the right things. The defence - okay, there's a couple of question marks there, but Bauer and Pearce both stepped up as necessary, Dasilva was so bright, and Solly looked so, so good. Amos needs to learn to communicate with his defence better, and maybe has a few more flaws than I'd like but there was one particularly good stop in the first half where he adjusted his body mid-flight. Jury still out.
All credit to Robinson though. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts. We played as a real team today. I'm excited to see what we can do once we're in full flow.
That was a hard earned three points. Southend are well organised and not without flair. I couldn't really see the breakthrough coming today. Fantastic cross and great header by Josh. Ricky's goal was just pure Ricky. He's an absolute gem of a player. Love watching him. Thought Kashi was skating on thin ice early on a few times today. Not quite up to his high level of quality although he grew into the match. Didn't quite happen for Fosu either. Not through lack of effort but just too many poor decisions and what he tried didn't come off. Think Dodoo should have replaced Fosu on about 70 minutes. Brown set Southend up to press us high up the pitch and it worked. 2 - 1 was just about right but it could have been 2 - 2 quite easily. Starting to look like we will be top six or damned close. Still don't think we are ruthless enough to be top two. We won't keep too many clean sheets and you can't outgun every team. Chuffed to be sitting second though. We are a very tidy team and the best team we've had to watch for years and I mean Curbishley years.

Joint top scorers in the league...
Yeah I know. I just don't see us grinding out those 1 - 0's away from home. Take your point though.
From the start it looked as though Southend would be a banana skin and that they'd maybe break their hodoo against us (having not won against us since '96) - Nile Range is a player who needs to get his act together as there is definitely a player there and if it wasnt for his off the field issues I'd love us to sign him... As it is I wouldnt touch him with a barge pole.
For pretty much the first 50mins it was Southend who had the ball yet couldn't do anything with it whilst Charlton had to resort to breaking out on the counter-attack... Crossing from everywhere was poor (Fosu and Holmes were over-hitting it and Forster-Caskey on set pieces was awful today) yet then Chris Solly showed everyone why he's our number one Right-Back with delivering a peach of a cross and provided his knee issues dont return he'll finish his career as a Charlton player and bloody high up on the appearances list... that I have no doubt of.
We then got a second and felt that we could easily have gone on to win either 3-0 or 4-0 yet Southend are no mugs and got their goal which concerned me slightly because felt there was a possibility of a Oldham repeat yet the players definitely learned from last week and other than an Amos mistake, Southend never truly looked like scoring again.
Its a long way to go and at the moment the big matches are coming at the Valley first (would kinda prefer these wins to be coming away from home) yet on to Wigan on Tuesday with a repeat please!!

Came out the blocks 2nd half after an obvious bollocking, nervy last 10
Clarke the stand out player for me again, very classy and composed.
Don't see his position under threat

Keen to see the player marks later.
2-0 Holmes 68'

First time in the East Stand. Liked it.
F@ck me were at home

This is the season we should have had last year.
We needed to get the full backs forward to get the extra man and Solly put in a peach of a cross for Mags goal.
When Holmes scored it looked over but as with Northampton they scored with their first real chance but we saw it out.
Better team even if we weren't great.
Didn't work for Fosu today, Amos flappy, Clarke good, Pearce MOTM just ahead of Magennis.
Bit naughty putting the final score up on the screen before the final whistle.
Crowd was disappointing given how many said they were coming back today but it's not just about the football.
Happy with second but capable of higher.
Very impressed. Me and Billy Clarke are going to get on just fine. Potential for a lot of likeable characters amongst this bunch.
