"Maybe the team might say ‘are we going to get a better bid for him?’ If we went to £1.5million or £2m we’d probably get the deal done. But who in League One goes to that level? That is just astronomical and stupid money. We’ve offered a substantial amount.”"
Trying to put him and the club in a win win situation - if the deal doesn't happen , then they wheel out the old excuse that they refuse to put financial stability of charlton over a player and were put off by the price ... If the deal goes trough , they can say that their investing big money in the squad and a player
It's not completely unique that clubs turn down bids and and say their player is not for sale. I'm sure this is pretty much what Chris Wilder put into the Sheffield press regarding his attempt to sign Ricky Holmes.
Not everything is demanding of Criticism. This one might not be.
What I want to know is why are we putting all our eggs into this one basket now?
Will Grigg | David Tarpey | Matt Godden have all been linked yet it seems as though we're going for Grigg because he's the easy option as he's worked with Karl Robinson before now yet our best player this season is a 31-year old from Bradford?
Its also stupid to have admitted this £1.5m fee as if we do decide to target someone else, that figure is out there now and apart from Maidenhead (and Tarpey), the new club are going to be aware of that sum and will want as much of it themselves
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.
Who knows - and I know this is radical, but maybe he's telling the truth.
Sorry if it doesn't fit the narrative but that's life sometimes.
We have the richest owner in our history so that will always be the excuse.
We have to deal with it by either paying the money or finding better value elsewhere.
If we're bidding for someone like Grigg in the first place it must be significant, perhaps close to £1m at least.
Is it worth going into the season with only 2 senior strikers for the sake of saving £500k that might be enough to get him?
Under the SCMP rules (financial fair play for our league) owners can put money in as equity rather than a loan, so there's nothing stopping us from spending that sort of fee should Roland choose to. Just down to how much he wants promotion.
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.
Who knows - and I know this is radical, but maybe he's telling the truth.

Maybe he is. But is that good enough?
Footballs is a results business, off the pitch as well as on it. Would Robinson accept his players saying "well I tried to score but the other team had good defenders and a keeper in form"? No, of course not. Obstacles are expected and it is his and Meire's job to overcome them. To find a way.
Be that persuading Duchatelet to provide a bit more money, being better at negotiating, whatever. It's their job to make Charlton successful, not tell the fans why they couldn't do that.
And £1.5m to £2m for a striker who will make a big difference, that can do for us what Billy Sharp did for Sheffield United, is not (or should not be) out of the question. Are we in this league to win it, or not? If yes, let Duchatelet and Meire put their money where their mouth is. If not, then cut the excuses.

"That's life" all the time when Karl's around apparently. Always an excuse, never a positive end result. In my humble opinion, Tarbuck is full of shit:
"I'll be honest with you, I made some big mistakes at MK Dons where I was so eager to bring players in so soon," admitted Robinson. "I did it one year and I didn't bring in the type of player that aided the success of the club. And I learned from that very early on.
Not many, if any, clubs in league one would be able to spend 1.5-2m on a striker. By the same token, not many, if any, clubs in league one have sold nearly 12m worth of players in the last year. It works the same way at all levels of the game, clubs know Barcelona have lots of cash after selling Neymar so the prices they're going to quote are going to be inflated. That, coupled with teams knowing we desperately need a forward, will leave us unwilling to spend on a quality player like Grigg and end up paying over the odds for a lesser player or getting a cheap loan in.
A little over 7 days left of the window and nothing looks close. Is KR only talking about strikers too, are we now sticking with Philips. 3-4 new players now 0-1?
Come on, let's get a goalscorer over the line and get out of this league!
I understand KR's frustration & agree that we don't want to pay over the odds. A week to go of the transfer window & clubs are playing cat & mouse. A case of who blinks first. If we don't snap their hands off now we may (or may not) be in a better bargaining position at 11pm next Thursday.
Also remember that some clubs don't need to sell & have a better bargaining position - whereas we have been shipping players out FOR FREE all summer , mainly because they were on big wages. I doubt very much if any League One clubs will sell us a player on the cheap - will probably have to pick up a freebie / loan from a Championship club.
Reason why I kept bleating on in June that we hadn't got the players in. Certain posters on here keep chirping... "window closes in 2 months - players haven't come back for pre-season yet" but that's why its always good to get your business done early. rarely pays to buy on deadline day - just ask 'arry.

I guess this depends on who is paying the £1.5 to £2m. Are you offering to pay it?
This is the problem with only recruiting British. At best there are maybe a handful of players with the quality we need who'd be willing to play in League One. Alternatively, you can look at what 1-2m got Hudds last year or Norwich this year in the Championship.
Karl Robinson says Charlton defender Harry Lennon is going nowhere.
Lennon has been out for almost a year with a groin injury, and is yet to play under the Addicks boss.
The 22-year-old was targeting a return to first-team training in pre-season, but suffered a setback in his recovery.
When asked whether Lennon, who has attracted interest from League One clubs this summer, would be sold before the transfer window shuts, Robinson said: “No, I’ve decided to keep him.
“We’ve got good competition in defence, and we’ve let one go so we’re very fortunate. It’s an area in the pitch that we’re very accomplished in - and they’re all good.

“Harry has been sent for external treatment. He’s been down at the training centre for the last two weeks.
“It’s been a very difficult period for him. We’ve got to make sure we’re there for him and try every eventuality possible to try to get him back on the pitch.
“We haven't given him a timescale (to come back from injury), but we just know we've got to get him back out there as soon as possible.”
Lennon, a Charlton academy graduate, was a shining light in the Addicks’ 2015/16 campaign which ended in relegation. He was a first-team regular for Charlton in the second half of the season.
But when Lennon returns to full fitness, he faces a tough task regaining his spot with Jason Pearce, Ezri Konsa, Patrick Bauer and Naby Sarr competing for places.

I would not describe him as a "shining light" in our relegation season. I would describe him as "being forced into the first team because all our other defenders were injured or Naby Sarr."
I figure Lennon could desperately use a few months' loan at this point. That said, it's probably hard to loan a player while still injured, either because clubs aren't interested or because you want to supervise the players' recovery, a loaning club will not have his long term interest at heart. Personally, I'd probably have sold him and kept Terrell Thomas but I don't know that that is a 1:1 comparison.
He hasn't played in nearly a year, and that's after missing last pre-season as well with a groin injury. We have four good center backs ahead of him, plus Bowry and Yao seem to be rated. Given he's very left footed he can only comfortably play with Bauer or Konsa. It's good that we're keeping a bigger squad than usual but I'm very meh on him.

Stupid comment.
So a third division striker is ok at £2m just as long as someone else is paying for it?
I, personally, think that £2m (or even £1.5m) is irresponsible for a player that hasn't proved himself above the level where very few clubs can afford to sign him. If anything this kind of 'investment' is more similar to the 'value for money' that we got for the likes of a Naby Sarr or Polish Pete.
If he is not good enough for the Championship then if we go up we'll be stuck with him on wages that we would have to subsidise to move him on.
I find every bit as stupid to expect the club to sign players for these kind of sums of money as I do asking you if you'd be happy to pay for it.
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.

Your post earlier where you highlighted how he said 'usually I'm annoyed at my club etc' is actually the worst side of his management - we're gonna get another cringeworthy deadline day video where Karl wriggles around in front of the camera, bemoaning other clubs' behaviour, extolling all KM has done and concluding that we have some great prospects in Recco Hackett Fairchild and Dijksteel, KAG is like a new player etc
It's so formulaic it would put a Tom and Jerry cartoon to shame
Looks like h could be quite exciting to be fair, no idea how consistent he is though. Another left footer, not signed this one, obviously, be we do have an above average number at the moment.

Ball, 27, joined the Millers on a two-year deal in June after snubbing a contract offer from old club Fleetwood.
Charlton were in the mix for the former Manchester City trainee, and identified him as a target towards the end of last season.
But Ball chose newly-relegated Rotherham, and could line-up against the Addicks on Saturday.
Charlton chief Robinson said: “We were very close [to signing him]. We just got pipped at the final post so you win some, you lose some.
MORE: Robinson backs striker to come good for Charlton this season
“He’s not going to play against us - they’ll go with Jamie Proctor and Kieffer Moore up front. They’ll go with two strikers.”
When asked if it was frustrating to miss out on Ball, the Liverpudlian added: “No - we’ve got Ben Reeves!”
Ball, who scored 14 goals for Fleetwood last season, is likely to start on the bench when Charlton make the trip to Rotherham.
