Earlier today my son phoned and asked me to get an extra two tickets for Bury away for his two friends...both Charlton very regulars. I have had this discussion on here, indeed heeded Covered End to an extent. When he got home from work (he is young and tech/internet savvy, his job depends on it) and we all sat down to a Plum family dinner cooked by yours truly. As usual my son had his laptop next to him. I said to him, I want you to get the tickets online, use my credit card, so I can go to the Valley tomorrow to collect them without a surcharge. he said OK (after all three of the tickets were for him and his mates). After saying 'this is stupid' and stopping and starting again from fresh he eventually said 'can't you do it by phone?' It turns out that he would have to input the names, addresses and email addresses of all four of us to buy the tickets online. Unsurprisingly he didn't have that information immediately to hand. So I will end up being a personal caller to the Valley tomorrow to buy tickets for the Bury away game...AND THEY WILL CHARGE ME EXTRA FOR DOING SO! The online system was actually tried, believe me, and it wasn't possible to complete. Presumably the snorters on here will say I should have anticipated what information was required for all four of us and we ought to have had it to hand. All I will say is I tried following Covered End's advice, spirit of open mindedness and all that, and it didn't work for me. How is my experience as a fan to be justified? I am somehow at fault? Moaning for moaning sake on this issue?
Well on this point I agree with you 100%. I said last season that the system was not fit for purpose if you wanted to buy for more than just yourself.
I phoned Mandy Palace fan & explained the issue and said I refused to pay additional charges for a phone purchase, because the online system didn't work properly. They despatched the tickets free of charge.
Well we have some convergence now. To extend it, I note your kind advice about not taking time to go to the Valley, but then (possibly in the spirit of piss taking) you explain how I ought to get a bus to the Valley to pick the tickets up, so maybe we can agree on something here. Of course people can buy online, they can print out tickets, they can scan smartphone applications, they can be ambivalent about surcharges because they feel flush, they can even get others to do all the stuff for them. But. Do you think it is really reasonable to charge a personal caller to the ticket office window a surplus for taking the trouble to go to the Valley to buy one or more tickets in cash? Someone is sitting at the window anyway. All they have to do is take in the money and hand over the ticket. How does that justify charging above face/advertised value?
The justification is it's a penalty. It's a discouragement. They are trying to stop you doing it.
If you want to continue with the "old fashioned way" you will pay more.
You can't uninvent the internet. It's here, it's cheap, they want you to use it.

I tried using it this evening and it didn't work. I wasn't uninventing the internet either, but using it. Inventing the internet does not mean uninventing common sense.
My opinion is that an increase of ticket prices on the day makes perfect sense to me. They obviously would prefer not to have a last minute rush, the queues get quite large and means people collecting tickets they've bought can often wait large amount of time while people pick and choose seats etc. To charge people extra for popping down during the week when it's not busy and would have to have staff members there is absolutely outrageous, what sort of moron even thought of that idea.

I'd phone up tomorrow, say the system isn't working, ask for the tickets and say you're not willing to pay a fee. (as I said previously).

Premium phone line isn't it?
No it's free if you phone from a Virgin landline I believe, as it's an 03 number. Standard rate if not Virgin. I'll look the number up for you.

Not difficult to guess who said moron might be, CJLC.
Would it simply not be easier to make the actual ticket price higher and let that cover the staffing and processing and match day selling and all that kind of stuff, or is that too simplistic? They can price a ticket at, say, £23 instead of twenty, and then the messing around from the fan point of view can be avoided. Indeed if they also keep the smartphone/online/print at home option then each time that is used, they will make extra money because of expense avoided. They might also try friendly persuasion and encouragement to get people to use a system the club would rather prefer. The central issue using this method would be the specific price to pitch the ticket at.

It would, but unfortunately the stick is more effective than the carrot in this scenario.
Haha if they increase the base price of the ticket and everyone has an aneurysm, or they slap on a surcharge for booking/on the day tickets and everyone has an aneurysm. They could do absolutely nothing different to last season, and everyone would have an aneurysm. Thought everyone is boycotting anyway, so what's the issue?

The people defending the decision and (rightly) pointing out that times are changing and other companies do the same thing and wish to encourage online booking seem to not know, or are simply ignoring the fact, that these other companies have online booking sites that actually work with consistency and are easily navigable. Unlike Charlton's. It's just another piss take that is badly calculated and risks actually costing them more than they are going to gain out of it, especially good will wise. Once again they prove they they don't know, and don't care to know, about their customer base.

I think you have hit the nail on the head with the second paragraph.
If the idiots who agreed this idea had the nouse to increase the price by £3 to what they were looking to charge customers/fans/morons/racists then this outrage would not have occurred.
Incidentally, has anybody seen the matchday prices for next season? I daresay that will be another f*** up.
These people really p*** me off, at the same time upset me at the way they are dismantalling this club brick-by-brick.

As far as the ticketing website is concerned it is Sh***. I have been unable to buy tickets on the website for more than 18months. When I try too it does not recognise me. When I try to register on the site it says I already exist, and the club have done nothing to help me. That is how much they think of customers, they are the Gerald Ratners of football clubs.

Which is a kind of pity, because that was the only way I was going to go to any games this season.
Oh well. See you all back at The Valley after these incompetent, deceitful shits have sold up and pissed off, for good.
I think I'll have a look around a few clubs I won't be going to and start moaning about them.

It seems there are a lot of club staff at these gatherings.

I thought we had another celebrity fan!
I want to see her live on Masterchef being grilled by anyone who can turn a feckin grill on.
A spit roast would be more apt.

Must be the "export" version of Masterchef you watch...
