Slade interview in the SLP

  • I'm impressed more and more with the SLPs coverage of Charlton (& the other clubs) and with every bit of Slade related news I'm impressed with him more and more. Of course the real test will be on the pitch and with results but I've been a charlton fan far too long to walk away and not turn up so I will be there and I will get behind Slade and the team. As for the 'I'm not going until he sells' brigade, like it or not nobody is ever going to believe you are not there because you are protesting, everybody is going to think you're not going because we have been relegated and if we do actually start doing well and you do ever creep back for a match or two or more before RD & kM leave then you will lose all credibility. Far better to bite the bullet, buy a season ticket and both get behind a manager and team that looks like it intends to have a go and at the same time voice your anti-RD/KM protests where they will be seen and heard, in the ground on a match day. You know you want to, you wouldn't still be looking at this site and posting if you didn't care.

They aren't "walking away". People are boycotting because they care, don't you get that?
If I'm honest, no I don't get it. What's the difference between not being there because you are boycotting the ownership and not being there because we were relegated which is the usual reason clubs match day gates go down ? Surely you will no longer be supporting the team whatever the reason for your absence. Club has less fans after relegation is not a story of interest. Club's loyal fans continue to support the team and come up with novel ways of protesting each home game is a story that will run and run and gain a lot of support for the cause, and maybe attract more potential buyers.

In the meantime, in keeping with the thread, nice story SLP and keep up the good work Russell and good luck.
    I class myself as LOYAL.

I have been going since '76, seen us play at about 130 grounds and in 6 different countries.

I'll see you at Bury but not the following week.
There will be many that stop going all together which I think the Original poster was alluding too. Which in that case in my opinion they are no different to the premier glory boys!!!

Agree with first half of your post, but buying a season ticket is supporting the regime IMO. My season ticket is promised to the Supporters Trust, they have hundreds of them to be used as a bargaining tool as an when they see fit.

I have been a supporter since 1962, and will continue going to the valley buying individual tickets.
Why not buy a season ticket?

IF you are looking to go to most games and a season ticket works out cheaper, buy one.

I think the general opinion is not wanting to give money to the Belgians so the less the better.
Even better, buy a £175 season ticket for the covered end. A packed end with protest shirts, banners and protest events going on being shown in the TV goals highlights each week will surely have a much bigger impact
    I can see your point.

However, there is no right or wrong in the decision to attend or not.

I think life can be black or white, in this case there is a very grey area.

  • Frankly disappointed by the article. Thought it was going to be about Noddy, Dave, Don and Jim's comeback tour.

  • Russell Slade is saying all the right things. We shouldn't forget, however, that Karel Fraeye also spoke the right words. I remember saying at the time that what he says and how he performs could be two completely different things and of course that was absolutely correct.

A big difference here. This time we have a man that has a great deal of experience in the lower leagues and not someone who's career pinnacle was managing in the Belgian Sunday League!

    Good luck Russell.
  • It's about sending a message. Not buying a season ticket sends them a message.

Unfortunately, the message that will be received by RD, KM and everybody else that you are trying to send a message to including any potential new buyers is that Charlton was relegated last season and fans drifted away. I doubt the loss of income will really hurt RD so the only people that will lose out is the team, your fellow fans and YOU.
  • Sorry but I don't trust the regime one bit, and for those reasons I'm out.

It's the uncertainty of finance over the summer that will hurt RD. I would expect him to be aiming for promotion this season but only by spending as little as he deems necessary. He will therefore have to provide sufficient funds to do that regardless of the level of season ticket income. But it's the funding level that will have the greatest effect on what our squad looks like come the end of August (ignoring the negotiating skills of our CEO) and therefore our chances of achieving Slade's aims. Slade's talk at the beginning of July is fine but it means nothing, nothing at all when set against the backdrop of our disintegrating club.

If you think loss of income won't hurt Duchatelet and have an impact on his insane project then I think you don't really understand his motives. He wants to make money. End of. He's not in it because he loves either Charlton or football.

Kick him where it hurts and as we can't get at his bollocks I suggest we kick him in the wallet.

It's a loss of cashflow, not income and he can more than compensate for that by selling Lookman or Cousins etc.

Who loses out by the boycott then ? RD or us ?
  • Haven't seen Charlton play in 2016 but Slade has said and done enough to convinced me to go to Welling and Bury.

Won't be going to any home matches though. Personally there's still a lot which needs to change before I return.

You are either a. Deluded or B. Part of Roland's team if you think the protests are what will make him sell cousins or lookman

They know why people aren't renewing.

They have hired an agency to ring non-renewing ST holders as oft mentioned on here so they know it's not just relegation as much as they would like to pretend it is. No doubt that is what they tell Roland but we and they know it's not true.

It's up to people to make their own decision. Not renewing will be very hard for a lot of fans who are boycotting.
  • I sense people are weakening re attending home games!

    STAND FIRM

There, fixed it for the Charlton fans
There, fixed it for the Charlton fans who care about the long term future of the club, which requires the removal of Roland and Katrien.

Has it been confirmed yet, whether or not that RD gets the sell on fee for Batshuayi who's about to sign for Chelsea? If so then there's an extra £9-10m in his pocket so i'm sure he's not going to be too worried about 5-6k season ticket holders not renewing.

Some people think that there is a principle involved with the non-attending.

I agree, there is a principle with not attending but if the team does well then who is going to be hurt more by that principle, RD or the fans that said they are staying away until RD sells ? Winning a war is all about choosing your battles. Staying away only hurts RD if Charlton languish in the first division or get relegated again but all that will do is mean he has to move to plan B, whatever that may be. As things stand, Russell Slade may well turn out to be an inspired appointment.
  • A few have alluded to it, but if we do not buy a season ticket but buy individual tickets for each game instead, then RD will gain more money over the course of the season not less ...albeit not up-front.

The only way to make this work is to boycott totally but then we have no opportunity to make our protests known during the games.

The first two months of the season are going to prove very testing for our protests if the team prove to be successful. Like it or not, that is definitely going to dilute our protest support.

Not an easy game to play at the moment so I look forward to feedback from CARD as we draw nearer to the start of the season.
