It seems as though Roland is still owed a fair amount of money by the current owner at SL, so this undisclosed fee is probably the amount suggested sliced from the debt he is owed. Or some sort of deal behind scenes deal done there, tiny positive in the whole scenario is it's seemingly Riga who asked for him.
He was essentially second choice though now as they'd signed a new guy who was cementing/cemented his first team place.
For someone who likes to think he's pretty savvy, Roland does seem to get diddled by agents. 18 months for Johnson, 4 1/2 for Jorge...a release clause for Gomez. Or is it Katrien cocking up here?

And people moan.
This. Riga has come into a side that has conceded 11 goals in 2 matches and acted quickly to sign a centre back that he already knows. No problems here.
Of course if no new defenders signed up and Riga had to make do with the Keystone Kops at the back then there would be complaints about that also. Realistically, a big-name, high-profile defender with English/British experience and proven quality is going to look at this club and just laugh off any offers short of the ludicrously high (which RD won't be offering anyway.)
In our position, realistically, this actually probably is as good a signing as we can hope to make. That's the level we've got to set our expectations at, as depressing as that may be.
don't think too many are complaining at the actual signing per se but the length of the contract is very surprising and deserving of mentioning.
So, he has signed a contract to take him up to 34..,
How many on here would be creaming their jeans if we signed Kermogant? And he's already 34!
Hypocrites, the bunch of you...
As is Diarra who is one of our better players.
I think the main concern is the unknown factor here. If he turns out to be a cracking player who we have in and around our first team for the 4.5 years, it may turn out to be a good piece of business. If not, he will be added to the list of other players out on loan that are not good enough and nobody will take off our hands. Time will tell.
I have no problem with the signing in general, though the contract length did make me do a double take.
I'm comforted by the fact that is a Riga signing, someone he knows well, rather than a signing done by some network computer scouting "guru" based on his stats.
It's like Curbs bringing Gatting, Nelson and Robinson in from Brighton in his early days
i think the length of the contract is a sign of the persuading he needed to give up his move to New York City FC in exchange for a relegation battle here. Riga obviously rates him so who knows he may be ok.
Ben Haim, Buyens, Bulot, Watt, Adjarevic and Reza all came from Standard Liege and have contributed in some way. Some more than others, but all better signings than the likes of Lepoint, Nego, PP, Bergdich etc who came from other clubs across Europe.
Thuram was the only one that struggled. The club made it clear Koc was only signed to play for the u21s.
I'd be surprised if he's not at least an improvement on Sarr, Lennon and Johnson. As a regular for Standard Liege he should be good enough for us.
Four-and-a-half years for a rated young player who you have scouted properly, watched play and who you know how you can use might be good business. I cannot think that this is ...
But then again, this is just another seeming punt, and the others have all worked out well. The best deal the club has done is only signing Johnson for a month. It could have been so much worse.
Longtime NYCFC transfer target Jorge Teixeira officially joined Charlton Athletic of the English Championship Tuesday morning. The 29-year-old Standard Leige standout signed a four-year deal with the Addicks, becoming the first signing under new head coach Jose Riga.
EoS first broke NYCFC’s interest in the player back in December.
According to several sources, New York City FC “came very close” to signing the Portuguese centerback. However, a move to the Championship with the 11th place Charlton Athletic was both considered the more rewarding and lucrative deal for the player.'

Why would any club sign a player on loan only to play in the U21s? The answer is they didn't. He was sent to play in the first team, but Chris Powell deflected that. In fact, Koc didn't want to be here from the beginning and for some of the time went AWOL.
Transfer window: Charlton sign Anil Koc from Standard Liege
Charlton Athletic have signed Standard Liege midfielder Anil Koc on loan until the end of the season. The 18-year-old has made five appearances for the Belgian side. "He's a young player so he'll be more with the under-21 squad," Addicks boss Chris Powell said. "He's a wide player so we'll see how that develops for him. It's a different environment. He'll be involved with Jason Euell's squad and we'll see him with us as well." Brussels-born Koc has represented Belgium and Turkey at youth international level. "Of course, he's got to adapt," Powell added. "He doesn't speak much English and obviously with the physical nature of the Championship we need to make sure if he's ever involved with us he'll be ready for that." Koc is the third player to arrive on loan at The Valley from Standard Liege following Roland Duchatelet's takeover of the club. Midfielder Astrit Ajdarevic and goalkeeper Yohann Thuram-Ulien joined the south east London club earlier this month.

If you want to talk about double standards, (as pointed out elsewhere) then we should have kept Yann until he was 34. Apparently he wasn't worthy of a a 2 year deal, though.
Meanwhile it looks like Bournemouth have accepted a 500k bid so will actually turn a profit on him, whereas we're still lumbered with Piotr for 2 years.
I would assume based on his journeyman history he has just signed the longest contract of his career, his agent won't believe his luck when they came up against our negotiators.
Still think he will be decent enough for this level but when we are working to such a small budget seems crazy to give any player other then a young and already proven quality player that kind of contract length.
Because we've just had the worse week in our history on the field,
His Agent told CAFC to do one, when our opening Gambit was a 2 years contract. He has not only got a 4 and a half year deal but a free Merlin Pass to go to Madam Tussauds and The London Eye, but 50% off every gig at the 02 Arena. When he Finally got round to asking where we were in the League, Katrien said, we were just outside the Play offs
When I saw the thread title I didn't see the space between the 4 and the 1 and thought it was a 20.5 year contract (with a little maths puzzle thrown in).

Says it all really ...they benefited from him in their squad and then make a profit selling him ...what a horrendous piece of business by RD

Did we make Standard's Koc hard in the end? We got shafted with that one.
