I may be veering into House of Commons territory here but I think we're going to learn a lot more about the power dynamics and balances between Putin and the Oligarchs in the coming weeks. From what I've read and heard, while Putin may have been selected, or signed off on, by that group, it does not sound like he is by any stretch their puppet, as I feel like has been suggested at various points down the years. That said, if he will listen to anyone at this point, it would be them.

The trust doesn’t have funds enough to sustain Chelsea Football Club. Without Abramovich it really does crash and burn, or at least ceases to be the footballing power it has become. Abramovich cannot simply transfer monies to the trust. If his assets are frozen it would simply be seen as a way of preserving some of his capital.

On Tuesday Boris, in The House of Commons, said Abramovich was "already facing sanctions". That wasn't the case at the time. Later the PMs spokesperson said Johnson had "mis-spoke". Maybe Johnson went in to early, maybe he was warning Abramovich in advance.
Look I don't think particularly highly of Johnson's acumen for well, anything really. But even for him that would be pretty stupid. Imagine how many backchannels he must have to Abramovich.
