SLP seemingly confirming it as a free transfer. So how exactly does that fit with RD's strategy? A 26 year old, under contract, proven Championship level centre back and we let him go straight into a rival's first team for nothing? OK, we will save on wages, and it's good for Morro himself, but this does not sit right with me at all.

Seems to be a lot of this going on. haven't we picked up a few players who have basically had their contract cancelled to allow them to move on?

Usually players that are well out of favour/ a bit of a gamble - my issue is that Morro should have been worth at least £500k, given his age, contract and ability. Cannot rationalise this as a good piece of business.
Losing at the moment 0-2 at Blackburn. When Morro played against them Rhodes never scored! Was he really given a free - beyond belief! Previous owners really got slagged off but never sold our best players. I fear Bikey and Ben Haim have been found out - going to be a long hard slog from now on!

I read that we let him go for free, as a reward, which will enable him to negotiate a better deal.
Tbf the club are damned if they look after the players and damned if they don't.

Yes, look after our players by all means, but don't give them away to your rivals. Although strange the way RD is with spending money weird to write off a possible transfer fee!

My educated guess would tell me if anyone wars willing to pay money, the club would take it.
But why is my "educated" question? Was he too shit for us?
I don't think that at all, from what I've read he's done very well during his time at Charlton but probably isn't good enough for the current starting 11. If he wants to leave to get first team football we should allow him that. If no club wants to pay money for him then I think the right thing to do is to let him go for free.
I think it's a great way to reward the player for his hard work whilst here and is probably good for us to get his wages off the books. Weegie suggested this was a bad bit of business.
If no cash offers are on the table, there is no other option, if CAFC want to do right by MM.
I'm sure if RD held out for a fee and lost, resulting in MM sitting on the bench, on a high wage, getting more and more pee'd off, some people would use that as a stick to beat RD
But he was our third choice centre back and only an injury or run of bad form (ahem, ahem) away from being back in the team. Sod rewarding players for being loyal if it potentially affects the team and it wasn't as if he was languishing in the reserves. I was surprised we let him go on loan let alone releasing him altogether and don't agree with the decision and the fact it looks like it was a free transfer rankles even more.
As said earlier on this thread, this is another cock up from our Belgium friends, which will look worse the longer this season goes on. Kermorgantesue imo:( Not happy.
I wonder if CP was aware Morro was after a perm move? Can't believe we couldn't have got £500k in Jan from someone. Would be decent cover for Gooners who are playing a 5'10" FB in middle.

I doubt Huddersfield would be willing to pay good money for him, they already have some solid enough CB's at this level and like us they are pro FFP, so keen to balance the books.
No team can ever go through a season with just two experienced CBs.
In our current form, it means we are potentially blooding youngsters when the pressure is at its highest. And one or both of our CBs will lose form at some point, get suspended, be injured or plainly just in need a rest.
If we want a parallel in the PL we need look no further than Arsenal who also have just two experienced CBs and at times defend like keystone cops. The difference is that they have guile and goals coming from every direction to mask that shortfall. Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury and need to keep the goals conceded in a game to just one to have any chance of securing at least one point.
We've had 3 experienced CBs all season. Onyewu came in when Morrison went out on loan. If his deal isn't extended I expect we'll sign someone else in January.

I did forget about Onyewu. I suspect it's because I didn't really consider him as a first team contender but a "stop gap" emergency CB. Rather like Clubs that sign keepers to sit on the bench just in case their existing number one gets injured - and in the knowledge if that does happen they will have to go out and get someone who is capable of holding down a first team place.
Onyewu last seven appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season resulted in them leaking 19 goals. Birmingham, with Morrison in place, have conceded just two goals in his eight appearances.
So yes he is experienced. But he isn't a replacement for Morrison and much as I admire your optimism that we will sign someone else I rather fear that might be another journeyman on a short term contract if only to keep our squad at "bare bones" level.

The club has made £1.7m on player sales in each of the last two seasons - that's close to what they bring in for season tickets and is a vital revenue stream. So I find it bizarre if we did indeed let an experienced proven Championship player go for free. Perhaps Morrison felt misled when he signed up?
I hope Arsenal are equally generous if we go back in for Coquelin?!
In terms of centre backs I do think we are in a good place but along with Weegie I thought the idea was to sell players as we improve the squad.
Thought Morro had a great game today v Forest - solid as a rock - performances like that make you wonder how Bikey can get selected/chosen ahead of him - and then discarded for free.

this, though Bikey has been good so far as has Ben Haim for the most part .. food for thought that if Peeters is now contemplating 3 5 2, Morrison and the other two would be a terrific fit .. too late now though

He's gone now though and good luck to him.
