Very few players make every game these days so we should make sure there is a bit of rotation going on anyway...tbh taking time out voluntarily for something he believes in is far better than dropping him, being suspended or injured...besides, the thought of a central defence of bikey and morro is awesome...

Antisemitism (also spelled Anti-Semitism or anti-semitism) is prejudice against, hatred of, or discrimination against Jews as a national, ethnic, religious or racial group.[1][2] A person who holds such positions is called an "antisemite". As Jews are an ethnoreligious group, antisemitism is generally considered a form of racism.[3]

    OR

Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is the absence of belief that any deities exist.

So we have the following comment made by cafcnick1992 (and liked by LeaburnforEngland and BR7_ADDICK) -

"Maybe he can have the day off if he brings in one grain of evidence for his God to Bob Peeters. I think that's fair."

So most likely, a comment that disrespects one of our players and their beliefs. At worst, an anti-semitic comment that borders on racism (which I am sure it isn't).

The irony is that I was supposed to bring my little boys 6 year old friend down the valley in a couple of weeks and he is from an Israeli family (and very excited about seeing Ben Haim play). As long as he isn't about to get his (EDITED COMMENT INSERTED) *religious beliefs altered by a half time seminar on the benefits of atheism* then I still will.

This has really upset me actually.

I've seen no anti-Semitic comments. You need to lighten up and stop jumping on the offended bus.

    Thanks Colin.

Or should that be תודה לך Colin.
  • always difficult when there are cultural differences.

problem is we look upon religious holidays in a largely non-religious way. For many of us, Xmas day is normally (amongst other things) about gorging and knocking back the booze. If we were asked to work Xmas Day it would be a very small percentage who would say 'no' on the reason that is goes against our religious beliefs.

Tal has been a good solid performer so far. I've not seen any signs of a shirker or someone who doesn't really want to be here yet. If its important to him, then its important to him. We should respect that and do what we can to keep our players happy. He could have got a 'slight tweak' on Tuesday, or a silly sending off and none of us would have been any the wiser.

Dangerous (and a bit extreme imo) to infer that the above posters are antisemitic! Agreed, the post could have been slightly more sympathetic towards Ben Haim's views, although in the interest of equality and balance surely we need to be sympathetic towards the opposing?

This is gonna end up like the JJ debate!
Massive overreaction, that comment is clearly not anti-Semitic. And as for me liking the comment, I liked it because I think religion is a load of nonsense, as for Ben Haim, if that's what he wants fair play to him I respect his decision.
  • Tal is one of my favorite players of this year so far.

Don't know if anyone noticed on Saturday that he had family members in the crowd who came down to the touchline to greet him after, before he met them he shook all of the disabled fans hands as he went past - top top guy.

  • “Tal Ben Haim has been superb for us this season but he won’t be available for selection on Saturday because of his religious commitments and as a club we must respect that,” said Head Coach Bob Peeters.

“He’s a great professional and after he approached me and asked my permission not to play in this game I decided that undoubtedly it is the right decision to let him observe Yom Kippur."
  • In Bob's Norwich post match interview he's already said Morrison will be Tel Ben Haim's replacement.
  • so back to one of my earlier questions - Are Boxing day, Good Friday or Easter Monday religious holidays ?
  • Really hope Morrison will up his game, the gulf in skill and ability between him and Ben Haim/Bikey is a very large one.
  • I think Big Bob's comments are very well put. (I wouldn't have expected less).

What is ironic is that we all now see TBH as a huge loss. I wonder what would have been said (about him being missing), had this been for the Wigan game. The consensus from the Brentford game seemed to be that Bikey was a great signing and TBH was too old/slow.

TBH is clearly now seen as a brilliant signing and a class act (which he always was in my view). I couldn't understand the way that many were so lukewarm towards a player who has played at the highest level.

    No, yes, yes.

Question, not an anti anything comment, but how would everyone feel if several of the players removed themselves from selection for games over Easter ?

Then no doubt the Football League would reconsider playing games on those days.

Honestly think it depends on a bit more than it just being a religious holiday. On things such as the persons devotion to the religion and whether they're just doing it for a day off, the fact that they're well known traditional days to play football on in this country which they grew up involved in (for the most part), and that these days aren't as important to Christianity as Yom Kippur are to Judaism (Easter Sunday and Christmas being the two most important to Christianity). I'm sure there are other important days for Judaism that Ben Haim won't request to have off.

Wanna add I'm gutted he's not playing as think he's been quality.
  • I think we should all get the day off on Saturday in honour of Carl Sagan.

  • I think they key thing is the reason he wont be playing is he will be fasting from Friday night and it could damage him running around after not eating all day

so there is no need to mention Christmas or Easter because we don't fast for them days

No we eat and drink a lot

Now I am not religious, but I am pretty sure its not in the religion to eat a lot its just something we do, so thats no reason to not play,

But its in his religion to not eat for 25 hours(not something I would be able to do) and I am sure any health professionals would tell you it would be dangerous to play after that
  • Isn't Easter the end of Lent, the point being you catch up on what has been missing for the 40 days previously.

Either way I don't give a crap but my question was around players asking not to play as they have 'religious' things to do (attend Church for example).

What about Ramadan - that goes on for quite a while and requires you not to eat during daylight I think. That could be awkward if you're training and playing.

I agree, while Bikey gets the big cheers with his rocket powered leaps and a tackle that could destroy a rhino, Ben Haim has been equally as good in a more understated and quiet role clearing up loose balls and getting things moving quickly without resorting to lumping the ball into the stratosphere.

In some ways, Ben Haim could be the bigger loss - Morrison can be a destroyer like Bikey and will no doubt be fired up but he doesn't have and I don't know he ever will have the same composure on the ball. We'll go from two complimentary styles to two of the same style, the players are good enough but losing a strong pairing won't be easy.

I'd suggest that it's actually no, yes, no.
Easter Monday itself is not a religious holiday, although Easter Day and Good Friday are the two most significant days in the Christian calendar.
Boxing Day is the feast day of St. Stephen - but in common with most Christian feast days, it's not celebrated as such in this country.
  • Shows what small margins there are in football with all this praise for TBH.

Don't get me wrong I have been impressed and the defence are the reason we are where we are with him a big part of that, however he had one or two average games early, gave the ball away for Rotherhams goal and should have given two penalties away but for refs missing them.

Would be interesting to have read this exact thread if those two penalty decisions had gone the other way and he had been at fault for three goals by now.
  • I wonder what our thoughts on Igor would be if he hadn't have scored yet?
  • Sometimes I wish if it would have been easier to find out at 5 to 3 on Saturday afternoon that he wasn't playing and just got on with it.
