Surprised no one has mentioned Jackos clear cut chance.
The Goal at the covered end was cursed last night
(i.e. the Wolves chance when they had an open goal, hit the post and bounced along the goal-line... Actually did Henderson save that on to the post initially?)
Jackson is having to do a lot of the donkey work in central midfield, as Buyens next to him isn't really a tackler. The only other option in the squad would be Cousins as any other midfielder would leave us even more open.
its funny how a good start has sort of moved peoples expectations and happiness myself included.
I come away from last night a bit disappointed but then thought about it and realised I would have been more than happy with 4 points from Watford and Wolves and even more so with 13 points at this stage and unbeaten.
I think we may drop away a a bit as the season goes on and maybe finish 8th - 11th but we are going in the right direction.
Surprised no one has mentioned Jackos clear cut chance.

Yes he did.
Class save then... Shaky start (i.e. Wigan / Distribution) but he's becoming very reliable

Needs to sort out his kicking, particularly when the ball is moving. It was atrocious last night and generally poor all season.
Quite simply, that performance was just not good enough if we want to be challenging for the play offs. We sat back and got away with it against Watford and slipped easily into the same style last night - and were lucky to come away with a point. The midfield were slow and laboured, hardly won any first or second balls and looked second best for pretty much the whole game, except for the first and last ten minutes or so.
Some positives: Young Joe struggled a bit against good opponents, but kept his chin up and gained another valuable 90 minutes experience at this level. Ben Haim was excellent. Bikey his usual self (except got caught out a couple of times when he tried to be too flash). Rhoys had a difficult first half but had a storming second half - some of the blocks he got in were like 2 or 3 seasons ago. Both Moussa and Bulot showed a lot of quality when they came on. Best of all - Igor. A magnificent performance; dangerous, hard working, won more in the air than George.
Real negatives - all the midfield. George - starting to look like Spongefoot 2, the sequel.
We really missed JBG. With him back in on the right and Bulot on the left we will be a lot more penetrative. We really need a decent 2nd striker though. I haven't written George off yet, but except for some of his game against Derby he looks out of his depth. Slow, clumsy, can't jump. I was actually hoping Bob would play Church ahead of him, which shows how bad he was.
We gained a point without playing at all well, and still unbeaten, so it feels a bit niggardly to moan. But let's not kid ourselves either - we were poor.
Think we're just playing to the strengths and limits available to us at the moment, and doing very well through it. While conceding possession v Watford appeared to be at least partly a choice, last night it looked more as though Wolves were just stronger, more athletic for long periods. The comforting things are that the management seem well aware of the shortcomings, judging by the transfer window targets, and that while the players maintain the current levels of fitness and tenacity we're still unbeaten in 5th position.
This certainly wasn't one way traffic - we could well have won it at 1-0, and again towards the end, but without a physical No.9 to complement Igor's pace, energy, and skill, we struggle to turn the screw for sustained periods, with the ball finding it's way back to our half far too easily. The lack of strength in that one position is currently affecting the whole team, not just the point of the attack.
Over all another very entertaining game - what other country offers such consistent excitement in the second tier? Gomes was always going to be in for a tough night v Sako but despite a few slips wasn't over-powered by him (which many have been). Likewise Wiggy stuck doggedly to his task as they upped it, and the two CB's were so strong again, if a little more flustered than in previous games.
In midfield most of the good work was through graft again; everyone battled for the cause but nobody really stood out as an attacking force; interesting that Jordan offered at least as much as the others creatively. The Saturday - Tuesday fixtures appeared to affect us more than them, possibly because we spent so much of Saturday chasing the ball (which sort of brings us back to the lack of hold-up play at centre forward). Wolves certainly moved it forward a lot quicker.
So, as expected, we're very much a work in progress, but a very encouraging one, and Bob's getting the maximum out of his current resources. However if he can't juggle the slighter attacking players into a different formation up front, we night need to loan a strong CF soon to avoid the fatigue that too much chasing possession brings on.
Let's see if our preference for counter-attacking brings a first away win on Saturday...
For me the Watford and Wolves games show that our start to the season is a bit deceiving, and just an early season mini run of decent results, a couple of which we were fortunate to get.
Watford and Wolves will probably finish top 6, and our stats against both of them show we wont be threatening promotion this season. Its been mentioned a few times already but you cant have 30ish% possession at home and your goal peppered with shots and expect to come away with results. We got away with it twice in fours days and I suspect if we play another team who dominates us in that way we could lose 3 or 4 nil and have no complaints.
Still we are looking better then last season, I dont think we will struggle but I think mid-table is about our level at the moment.
Thought we were poor against a lower mid table Wolves team and made them look better than they are. Still unbeaten and 5th is better than I would have expected and if we can bring in a body or two we will do fine.
Wolves are now unbeaten in five. They had won three games in a row before the Blackpool game, conceding just one goal in the process and were unlucky not to win there as well. They are a side that broke our 101 point record in League One last season, a side that know each other well and play some great football under a good manager. They will be right up there this season. Give them some credit.
Wiggins has copped some criticism but he has been up against 3 of the quickest / most skilful wingers he is likely to meet in Mc manaman, Anya and Henry and, although skinned once or twice a game, has stuck to his task well and eventually prevailed. The assistance of Cousins supporting in him should not be underestimated either. In the second half Jordan ran the length of the pitch to get back and tackle Henry (I think) when he broke away.
Morgan Fox looks an assured player with time on the ball but he does not have the pace even of a below par Wiggins and the three I've mentioned would have exposed him terribly.
Spot on @LenGlover , he's running JJ close for the stick beating brigade at the moment. Wiggins has disappointed me with some of his performances this season compared to what potential he showed in his first season with us before his injuries and in a lower league. Last night however he stuck to his guns and did a good job on Henry not forgetting the fantastic last ditch tackle that was worth a goal which most of his knockers conveniently seem to forget. His forward play is letting him down still but first and foremost he is a defender and he performed that role well yesterday IMO.
JJ also did ok last night breaking up play, made a great run, was unlucky not to score and put a great ball through to Igor which nearly won us the match. JJ has never been this box to box dynamic playmaker that his detractors imagine. He's Captain, he's Big Bob's choice, he's first on the team sheet deal with it folks or have a go at Big Bob and best of luck with that one. :-0
This tactic of conceding the majority of possession is draining our players strength by the end of the game and giving the opposition a bit more...it shouldnt be happening at home
7 games in which The opposition has had most of the play. (Brentford just edged it)
Only profligate finishing by Wolves and Watford: 30 shots between them, and the woodwork being kind to as at last, saved us from defeat.
In all my 1000 odd games watching CAFC, including 7-1 at Luton and the 6 that Leeds scored at the valley, i can't remember a game where the opposition fired in so many shots at our goal ?
The positives are, still unbeaten, scored in all seven games, have players who will get better. Plus we did have 5 good chances: two for JJ, two for George, and one for Igor.
This self-loathing is making me bloody sick. Anyone would think we are in the bottom 3 without a point or a goal to our name. I am sure Blackpool and Fulham would love to swap places with us this morning. Anyone who thinks this league is easy is badly mistaken and Rotherham away on Saturday is a very tough game again.
Some people have got very short memories, think back to the beginning of April and where we were then. Think back to the Barnsley home game. On the verge of a disastrous relegation. If we had gone down do you think we would have players like Igor and Joni, etc. Roland might have said "Sod the lot of ya, I`m off" No new pitch, no thousands of new seats, no new players!
We have a new manager, new players, all of whom are striving to find the best way for us to pick up points in a very tough division and give supporters some entertainment along the way. In my view they are doing exactly that!
I am absolutely over the moon with where we are and what we have done so far! Don`t forget we were favourites to get relegated, not promoted as champions!
Jackson is having to do a lot of the donkey work in central midfield, as Buyens next to him isn't really a tackler. The only other option in the squad would be Cousins as any other midfielder would leave us even more open.
For me it's the other way round. Buyens is carrying Jackson. Neither of them are ball winners. Jackson bleeds for this club and I respect him for it, but too many games are passing him by. Buyens wants to get the ball and play, Jackson wants to get forward and score goals. They can't both do it comfortably all of the time. For me we choose Buyens as our ball player and get someone in with him to break the play up. The most logical thing is move Cousins into the centre. However I'm not sure breaking up the play is the best use of him. Perhaps we need to get a Bikey mark 2 in central midfield if such a player can be found in the loan market.
Obviously JJ is our captain, I know you can't really drop your captain, but I feel this is an area we need to watch closely as the games come thick and fast over the next few months.
Sorry, but I don't get this " still unbeaten " crap. If you play 2 & draw them both , you get 2 points. If you play 2, win won & lose one you get 3 points. I know which I prefer.
Except it's not crap at all is it? It is in fact glaringly true, and the points garnered from those draws currently see us sitting well above eg. Millwall with their own win-lose form. I'd be pleasantly surprised if we sustain it over a long season but an average of two points per game is outstanding and almost always leads to automatic promotion. What are you trying to say by not being happy with an unbeaten start? Should we win every game? With a relatively limited squad? Grow up!
Definitley a point gained last night, they looked a good team who slowly wore us down with quick pressing all over the pitch.
I think we looked a bit tired yesterday, things didn't really happen for us. Hendersons kicking was shakey again, a rare lapse by Bikey, 2nd best to the ball. All meant we didn't deserve a win last night.
I said it before and I will say it again, if Cousins wants to compete for a centre mid spot then his touch and passing within a 10 yard area have to be better. If you look at Buyens and Jacksons range of passing, it is light years ahead of his.
Sounds a bit negative but I don't intend it to be, i'm really happy where we are and how we have competed. We were 2nd best last night and still managed to get a few clear goalscoring oppurtunities with good looking football. We still look solid and are still gelling as a team, happy to think we are not relegation fodder.
Strength in quality is our problem, we have lost Gudmundsson and clearly with it lost a whole attacking dimension. We need another "make a difference" player to step forward.
My first game of the season (been away) and could not believe the huge improvement in overall quality all over the field compared to last season. Buyens, Bikey and Vetokele all a level above what we have been used to seeing over recent years and the passing and movement in another universe from the days when Morrison used to lump it forward in desperation towards big Yann time after time after time.
Also thought Wolves were an excellent young footballing side and I was very impressed with Henry, Sako and their play-maker McDonald. Fortunately for us, they picked Leon Clarke up front who Bikey ate for breakfast instead of little Dicko who outpaced him when he came on in the second half.
Only two similarities from last season; we still lack a creative play-maker in midfield who can spray the ball around or make a cutting pass and we still get out-muscled off the ball far too often and start squealing to the ref which I don't like to see.
Bit lucky to scrape a point but we look like a very strong team this year who could do with some more inventiveness in midfield and a back-up for Vetokele.
Two things that stood out for me last night were a terrific block from Joe at the far post when Wolves looked certain to score at the death, and a similar tackle/block from Wiggins right in front of the goal when the Wolves player found himself clear... Brilliant play from each of them. First time I have seen Gomez and I was impressed at how comfortable he was on the ball...yes, a few passes went astray, particularly in the first half, but I liked what I saw and hope I continue to see him in a red shirt for a while longer.
Have seen three games this season (Brighton, Watford and last night) and each we seem to have struggled to hold on to the ball, which I'm not massively happy about, but at the same time, it's only football and I'm still enjoying watching it.
(also, love the beer bar at the bottom of the east stand - got a pint of ale at h/t on sat and managed one pre match last night and again at h/t...definite extra revenue for the club by improving facilities, as I would never normally buy any food/drink inside the ground...)
Very lucky to get a point last night. Our central defence is good and Igor is outstanding but there was a lot to give concern last night. Wiggins was given a torrid night by Henry. Jackson is ponderous and unimaginative and far too similar to Buyens. Tucodean is slow and easily outmuscled although he has the occasional nice touch.
Wolves were good, but our points total is not relfective of our quality. We are lower-mid table with our current side.
Apparently we were the first team to score a 'proper' goal against them this season (not sure what 'proper' constitutes, but anyway..) the other 2 have been a pen and a huge deflection. Then again, i'm not entirely sure that coming off Bikey's knee would constitute a 'proper' goal either. Wolves were moaning to the ref about the goal - any idea what that was about?

I did not see the game but your point about Cousins is interesting from a tactical viewpoint.
The problem is that when a right-footed central-midfielder plays on the left (like Gerrard did for England) they are inevitably going to get pulled inside and leave their full-back exposed, it's very hard to avoid.
Sure Cousins mays really try to shield Wiggins but it's very hard to do that when your understandable reaction is to push inwards not outwards like a proper wide player - that's why Cousins needs to get off that flank.
Thought we were poor against a lower mid table Wolves team and made them look better than they are. Still unbeaten and 5th is better than I would have expected and if we can bring in a body or two we will do fine.

Wolves will be up there this season. What a ridiculous, ignorant comment to make
i think we have to accept that we are going to concede a fair bit of possession and i think the idea is to strike quickly once we get possession or in broken play ...we have the tools in ventokele (provided he stays fit i think hes mustard) and george has potential ,i do think we need another striker though .Wolves will think they ought to have won (on possession and chances) but george missed 2 chances that cd have made us 3-0 up .Bikey susceptible if exposed to pace ,Wiggins (still doesnt look fit to me) left me a bit worried ,Gomez looked better going forward than defensively(i hope he has the will /desire /ability to learn).Lawrie was a bit pre occupied looking after Joe last night and I am not sure if Cousins is any real use playing wide left. I have seen a few negative remarks about the skipper ...he puts in an awful amount of work and has made some great runs from deep i think him and Yoni could work well .
i know i ll get slaughtered for this but with Gudmonsson fit id give Cousins a rest ....the surface looks great ,the ground looks good and compared to this time last year its a pleasure to turn up and get behind the team COYR

In what way? Is it ignorant or ridiculous to suggest they could be around the top six this season? I don't think so.
Just a thought, but would a switch to 3-5-2 have made sense in the second half when we were being overrun, Morrison on for Gomez (better defensively), Wiggins and Wilson as wing backs to flood the midfield?
Fair result in he end, we did ride our luck. A lack of movement when we had the ball. Stil a win on Saturday will get us back to 2 pts per game and that's promotion form.
Says it all for me. Two games where we've defended well and ridden our luck. Shocking lack of movement at times, but hopefully Bob sees what we see. We have a very different level of quality out there than last season though, and I suspect there's some gelling still to do. Shame Tucudean and Jackson couldn't tuck away those chances, particularly the first of those - I think we'll prove difficult to peg back from a 2 goal lead given how well we're defending.
Jackson is having to do a lot of the donkey work in central midfield, as Buyens next to him isn't really a tackler. The only other option in the squad would be Cousins as any other midfielder would leave us even more open.
And he's doing it well - but we do lack a genuine defensive midfielder in the squad.

Just don't understand all the stick coming Wiggins' way. OK, he was a bit under par in the first half but as the game wore on he stuck to his guns and improved noticeably and even eventually got the better of that tricky winger Henry he was marking. And I can only assume those criticising must sit in the North Stand where they may not have been fully able to appreciate his amazing last ditch tackle which saved a certain goal.
Also note we had the second highest attendence in the Championship last night. (Only Cardiff had more). And I'm surprised the attendance was only declared at 15,973 - although Wolves bought 1,400 less than Watford (but still an impressive turn-out for a Tuesday game) the home stands looked a lot fuller than Saturday.
And finally, I think you can see what a loss to Smallwall Kenny Jackett walking out was. The man has got talent and is far too good for that lot down the road.
