Best goal ever scored at The Valley in your time - either for or against The Addicks?

  • For: Bartlett
    Against: RVP

  • The purist in me rules out RVP because I'm pretty sure there was something moody in the build up that meant RVP should never have got that chance.
The Hales v Hull goal of the season was great, but around that time, and not captured on video, Hales scored an absolute beauty with a first time volley against Walsall I think (in a 4-0 0r 4-1) a cross from the left and slammed into the covered end net, fantastic.
In the late sixties/early seventies we lost 0-2 at home to Bolton (or it may have been 2-2) and the first Bolton goal I swear was 40 yards out wide left, and it screamed into the net so fast nobody's brain could actually compute it until the Bolton goalscorer leapt yards into the air punching his fist, to be followed by a mobbing of every single Bolton player including the keeper who ran about 60 yards to join in.
Our best? Dearie me, have to go with the Treacy v Derby for the purity, skill, and significance of the game. In the context of the time the memory of that goal sustained one's support for many of the following miserable seasons.
    So Treacy for us.
    And an unknown Bolton player.

Sorry to bring up bad memories but Berbatov's goal for Spurs in the game you got relegated at the Valley was special.

Ledders played the ball up to him on half way, with Talal El Karkouri tight behind him. He spun, flicked the ball one way, ran round the other, held him off and slotted it into the corner.

Shame the only footage of it on You Tube is so poor you cant see how good it was but it may jog your memory...

Such a talent, Berbatov but a right lazy b*stard and not a team player. He could have given so much more with the natural ability he had at his feet

I remember Wyn Davies scoring a bullet header from a corner for Bolton at The Valley (similar power to Paul Went's as described in an earlier post). Bolton won the game 1-0 but my main memory of that game, other than the absolute bullet header, was of Franny Lee running round our keeper and shooting at an empty net - but the ball hit the post and bounced away - classic barracking moment!
You mentioned the Bolton 40 yarder - I recall Mike Kenning doing the same for Charlton in a 2-0 win over Ipswich - now there was a man who. when he hit the ball, it stayed hit!
  • RVP's goal was great but he should never have been on the pitch. Booted one of our players when he was laying on the floor
Barlett's vs Leicester just for the technique alone

Bartlett for skill, Newton v Ipswich for importance, Robinson v Man Utd for excitement, Lisbie's third against Liverpool for shutting up the glory hunting cockwombles.

RVPs was a shinner, and he shouldn't have been on the pitch. So Baros (I think) for Pompey.

*Edit* Noticed further down - Berger for Pompey, not Baros.
  • Kermorgant's v Hartlepool?! Looks very much like a cross to me.

    Van Persie vs Charlton

That is a great shout for the best for and against.
  • Shaun Bartlett for me too
Ian Marshall for Oldham always sticks out

Marshall was playing for Ipswich that day.
Just remember him playing in blue that day and seeing as he played for Everton, Oldham, Ipswich and Leicester I couldn't narrow it down.
  • 1. Treacy
    2. Bartlett
    3. Kermogant

    Against Berger.

Graham Moore against Norwich City after a one-two with Luciano Masiello. Still the most violently struck shot I have ever seen.

I had forgotten this one which was the best goal I had ever seen as a kid. As I remember it screamed into the mid right hand corner, it was an absolute beaut ;-)
  • For: Bartlett/ Kermorgant/ Stephens v Bury
Against: RVP, shin or not that was incredible. Also remember Wilbraham scoring a great goal against us one year.
  • I seem to remember Ginola scoring a cracker against us and them a couple of years later his replacement, a really short guy, Dominguez?? Scored an identikit goal and then vanished from the face of the earth ;)
  • For - Yann vs Hartlepool
    Against - Jackson vs Charlton

Any goal we concede is shit and pure luck, but as he plays for us now I'll allow it.
  • Against - The goal by the stoke player in the league club

For - Walshie against Pompey, the goal that meant we had a club again will never be beaten for me
  • Toss up, bartlett or any one remember steve browns 40 yarder in 1997? I think. Gotta unfortunately be van persie against.
  • Claus Jensen moments after Brad Friedel scored.
  • Totally bias but Paul Mortimer v Bradford 97 i think. Solo, twinkle toed stuff. Made even better by the fact my dad had just told me for the thousandth time he was a lazy sod! Stevie Brown scored a screamer too that day i think. Anyone got the highlights to post?!

Off topic, but I seem to remember their consolation goal being a bit dodgy. (It was the 4-1 game, right?) Really hazy memory, but I seem to remember their scorer being a little brazilian and a nasty piece of work. Maybe I'm misremembering. Also, wasn't Eddie Youds playing for Bradford that game prior to us signing him the same season?
Edinho. He punched it in I think.
  • I'm aware that this is going to show my age but the goal that stands out for me was a penalty from Stuart Leary in the 1950's when we were in the top division. He simply stood by the ball, no run up and passed the ball into the corner. Genius!!

  • Best goal scored for us, I'm going to go with Jerome Thomas's against Tottenham in the 04/05 season: youtu.be/UDQpu_YCeZ0?t=17s

Great hit, and we played so well that night as well. Remember watching the goal again and again on the train home on my phone, think we had a great chance of getting top 6, we then got battered by West Brom on the Saturday and that put pay to that.

I was in the Jimmy Seed for the Yann goal against Hartlepool sadly so it looked like a fluke goal... I'd also go for Stewart's volley against Leeds last season as well, brilliant technique.

Some goals against us that haven't been mentioned... Scott Parker scored a beauty against us from 30 yards in his first game back at They Valley for Newcastle, we went on to win 3-1. Seem to remember Yakubu turning our defenders inside out in the 06-07 season (not hard!) before firing one home. Also people may not remember it but Ben Burgess for Blackpool scored a great goal against us as well in the 07-08 season.

Great goals in the Tottenham video.
I notice at the end that Curbs & his coaching team were already morphing into West Ham colours!
  • Whatabout at Shithurst park, that Andy Jones one from the corner of the penalty area at the sainsburys end?

I was at the last game at The Valley in 1985 when we beat Stoke 2-0.
After that I moved to Manchester so the Selhurst and Upton Park years I missed, apart from seeing on tele.
Really good to now be able to have an ST again now I only have to drive to & from Ipswich.
Any footage or links for the non-Valley years would be appreciated.
I do remember listening on the radio to the Leeds play-off final in 1987 and Peter Shirtliff's winner - what a super hero and one of the most exciting radio commentaries I have ever heard to this day!

    Scott Wagstaff v Bournemouth.

I think it was opening match of our L1 winning season.

A bending volley from a corner.

  • Thinking about that game again vs Stoke in the LC, I think that may have been the same game where there diminutive winger (O'Connor?), scored the best 'worst' goal ever.

If my memory serves me correctly he seemed to stumble over the ball from the edge of the 'D', eluding several challenges, all of the way into the six yard box, before toe-poking it painfully slowly beyond the hapless Sasa.

AFKA may remember this as well?

In that period, with the less than honourable exception of the Dagenham games, I cannot recall us beating lowly opposition - we always found a way to lose in the cup!

Perhaps we should start a, "Worst goal you sever saw at The Valley in your time" thread?
  • I recall JJ scoring a truly ridiculous scissor-kick against Coventry in 2000 - is my mind playing tricks on me here?
  • For: Bartlett/ Kermorgant/ Stephens v Bury

I don't get how a lucky miskick can be incredible (unless you mean in the literal sense). Each to their own though. :-)
