Not happening now, a couple of the girls have seen this thread and posts on Facebook and they have decided not to do it as they feel they'll get too much abuse from it. One of the girls said the comments are "really horrible" so there you go, I'm sure many of you are happy but it is a shame the way some people have portrayed their stance on this matter
I don't think people have been horrible.
I am glad they've been put off but it's not via the way I would of liked as I don't really like the thought of girls getting upset.
It should never have got that far. What were the club thinking??!
it makes us look sexist, disrespectful, chauvinistic and narrow minded.
I disagree. Girls prancing around, scantily dressed, in the main, for the "delight" of men, surely IS sexist. Are we not as a society, meant to be respecting women for more than their looks and bodies ?
It's not for the delight of men though, it's because they enjoy it and the competition. It's men that think it's for their enjoyment and have changed it into that. Girls should be allowed to dress up in cheerleader gear without men thinking it's done for them. Men should be able to enjoy it for the 'sport' of it and the moves they perform not because of how they're dressed or how attractive they are.
I don't think these comments make us look sexist at all however, it was mainly people saying they think that such remarks would be made or that they just didn't like the thought of it at the valley. Which is a totally acceptable view.
For what it's worth I don't want cheerleaders at the valley either.
Girls dancing in our stands throughout the match is not a competition. Unless they will be dancing in all stands and we have to vote at the end of each match, as to who is the winner. Personally, I'm there to watch Charlton, not judge a dance off. If they want to dance in a competition elsewhere, that's absolutely brilliant & I wish them well. I just don't want them dancing in the stands at Charlton thank-you. Quite frankly the very suggestrion is ludicrous.
the just say no was enough, anything other than that was grim, and wouldn't have been said infront of their old man, brothers or fathers, cowardly on here to do it ,

(just going to check I never did 8) )
I don't think I've seen anything personal towards the girls. If one or two have said something about their looks then it's not on.
It's more to do with the whole idea and why we don't want it, which is fair game.
Calling it a 'witch hunt' and the like is completely OTT.
suzi, with the greatest respect (genuinely). As you are in a minority of one on here, or perhaps I've missed anyone else, thinking it's a good idea. I believe you should consider that many people, genuinely, feel it would effect their lives negatively. I do not want the club I love, to become a complete laughing stock to every fan in the country and I'm completely serious. No offence intended.
If you re read my posts. I did say I don't agree they should do chants when we score and have music when we score although that wasn't even mentioned in the article. I said if they sit in the stands and clap and song along and try to start Mexican waves, what's the harm. People will either take to it or they won't. It won't make the national press if 20 girls clap along with the game. Be a bigger person and laugh off any criticism which frankly won't even happen.
People should stop with the personal comments about the girls. It's very rude. I'm embarrassed.
I've not seen any but if someone has then it's out of order. I don't think it's out of order that the vast majority don't want cheerleaders in the stands during the game.

I don't want them there either. I'm just saying that none of this is sexist.

I don't think it's out of order that the majority don't want cheerleaders at the game on the pitch etc. but what's the harm in the stands?
Re read the thread. Plenty of derogatory comments unless afka has had to edit them out as he asked for people to be pleasant in their posts which people sadly ignored.

I think you're being somewhat naive. We have Millwall, Palace, Sheff W, Watford, Huddersfield, West Ham, Spurs, on here regularly. If we have cheerleaders trying to start Mexican waves, the rest of the Champ will know pretty quickly. They probably already know it's being discussed ! Not in my name :-)
Sadly nla, a lot of the negative nasty stuff is from older people that would have gone crazy if aimed at their own children but not one person has responded to that point.

And I think you're making a far bigger deal of it than you should. If 3 sheff wed fans, a spurs fan and a palace fan take the mickey out of you on this website over this and it bothers you that much then bloody hell. There is a bigger world out there than what happens on football forums and far more important things to be bothered about.
This forum seems to virtually (literally) amplify things into bigger issues that don't even exist. And if you speak to people who support charlton and don't use this site they have no idea of some of the things discussed and don't let things consume them so much.
This was always going to be very emotive to charlton fans.
It works at palace because: 1. The girls train twice a week and have a dancing, performing arts background. 2. They have a squad of girls to pick from. 3. They have also cheerlead/danced at Twickenham and the millenium stadium. 4. Palace fans accept and seem to enjoy because they did it first at a football ground.

It's not just about football forums, it's about the whole of football. Brighton fans get stick from plenty of directions re "gay" connotations. Palace are widely known for being "weird" etc. We may be known as trainspotters, but I don't want us to be in the weird/freak show bracket like Palace. PS I've re-read the thread & can only see a few derogatory comments, mainly on page 1 of 9. Perhaps others have been deleted. Anyway, I bid you goodnight :-)
I've just reminded myself why I don't post on here that much anymore.
You seem intent in pushing your point of view on everyone on this thread, and anyone who doesn't want cheerleaders is either sexist or personally attacking them. Why don't you take some time to appreciate that the vast majority are hugely against this, and not because we're being male arseholes and not just because the idea is fucking embarrassing, but because it tampers with what we know as the matchday experience.
Having cheerleaders in the stands starting Mexican waves would not only be annoying as hell, but it would add a tackiness to Charlton that a club with our history simply does not need.
What is important that you always fight your corner. Even when it seems that no else agrees with you. Suzisausage you did that, and gave it back with interest. Deep respect and carry on posting.(was sid James in that film)
However, I will play devils advocate; this isn't very similar to Crystal Palace as:
a) The Crystals were West Ham rejects. b) These girls actually seem.. decent girls studying at uni and doing this as a sport.
I've just checked out their twitter feed and they do competitions and help out at local events; including Run To The Beat that some of you chaps partook in. They are very different from the plastic bimbos that are paraded around Selhurst Park for a little bit of excitement before 90 minutes of plastic support.
On a more shallow level, if I remember rightly, these were the girls (or 'stunners' as some of the posts on here referred to them as) who were selling programmes and other things around the valley vs Derby/Wigan. That photo, with all due respect to the girls, isn't very flattering but none of them look bad. I think the remarks about them were, whilst pretty funny as a guy, perhaps a bit hurtful and unfair towards them.
Fair play to them, they're doing more than a lot of people their age are and I like the idea of them helping out CAFC and us returning the favour - unfortunately, match day performances may not be the ideal way. I hope the rumour about their Facebook post isn't true though, I don't like the thought of anyone taking silly jokes to heart.
They have been thrown to the lions though, "Charlton Cherubs"?! That's just asking for Cherubs to be made in to "Chubbies" etc Unfortunately they'd need a very thick skin to perform at a football match, and maybe it's best to save them from that..
To channel Airman Brown for a minute, it's poor that the women were told that this would be a good thing. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of what we are like would have said at the outset that this wouldn't work. I think that a couple of comments may be slightly out of order but I don't think it's wrong to say that I pay my money in and don't want someone trying to do nonsense things like Mexican Waves (in the same way that it's not sexist to say Emma is a bad commentator. She's a bad commentator).
People should stop with the personal comments about the girls. It's very rude. I'm embarrassed.
The personal comments were wrong and unnecessary I agree totally.
However, not only do I think cheerleading in this context is inappropriate I do believe it is, in this context, sexist and demeaning.
The sexism comes from the men making lewd, crude or disparaging comments on here or at games but also from those who promote scantily young girls as suitable "entertainment" IMHO.
It places women in a position to be judged on their appearance rather than abilities. We see this on here with the comments about KM and other women. It is, IMO, undermining and consciously or not belittling.
A competition I can see the point of but this is not a competition.
Good luck to the Cheerleaders, i hope they enjoy their sport and take pleasure from it but it would not add anything to the "matchday experience" just as having them sell programmes will add nothing.
Not bothered whether we have cheerleaders or not. Surprised how people have such strong opinions on the subject. It wouldn't worry me if they were doing their thing before or at half time. Those who don't like it can go to the bar or not watch it.
Putting all the sexist and unpleasantly personal comments aside, it seems to me that the vast majority of those who have contributed on this post are in the "No" camp.
Football has already had its heart and soul ripped out by avarice and greed - can we just stop there? Whilst I'm all in favour of having a great match day experience I fail to see what cheerleaders will do to put anything into football other than an Americanised Cotton-Candy veneer on the occasion.
All I want is to watch the beautiful game (and Charlton's game is far easier on the eye this year) in the company of a decent bunch (ie. you lot). That's all the entertainment I need!! :-)
Call me old fashioned but I generally go to Charlton to watch a game of football. I'm not into this whole 'matchday experience' thing and don't like the Americanisation of our sports in general. I have seen an NFL game and yes i enjoyed the razzmatazz of it but that was a one off and in all honesty it would drive me mad at every game.
Save the fireworks, dancers and tickertape for when we lift the Championship trophy in May!
