Charlton Cherubs?

  • Let them do it once at half time while we are reading about the weekend engineering works on our phones.

Not every game. Not in the stands. As others have said, in the US they tend to be trained dancers, and are there for directors to cut away to during breaks and to sell football shirts to women.

That Room 101 thread has plenty of good stuff but this is great.

It could be quite innovative with a bit of imagination.

    [snip]

I only throw those ideas out there for consideration, certainly there is room for a new and daring approach to the whole cheerleading phenomena when we launch at the Valley, we can say no to sexist and misogynistic gawping at these fine boys and girls, and yes to creativity.

Seth, what are you on, and where can I get some? Alternatively, have you considered expanding on this as a more lighthearted submission to the next Voice?
  • Still not seen where it says they will do anything other than sell programmes/jackpot tickets and be in the crowd

Apart from the article attached to the very first post in this thread??

"In the crowd dancing during the game, selling programmes and getting children involved in routines."

No mention of anything like half time or before the match on the pitch performances which everyone is against.

I'm against it too but just pointing out nothing has even been suggested
  • "In the crowd dancing during the game"

Admin is there a way I can highlight this more please...
  • I thought the point people were making is that it's like palace having cheerleaders on the pitch, but according to the article, they won't be. That's the only point I was trying to make.
  • So you're cool with us having cheerleaders in the stand during the game? Just to clarify.

Stick em up on the left side of the West-upper. They won't be in anyones way & the side hoarding will hopefully block them from the view of away fans, stopping any mocking of us.............

Not happening now, a couple of the girls have seen this thread and posts on Facebook and they have decided not to do it as they feel they'll get too much abuse from it. One of the girls said the comments are "really horrible" so there you go, I'm sure many of you are happy but it is a shame the way some people have portrayed their stance on this matter

Not sure what they expected. Football and cheerleading are an unlikely mix....
  • Better they realise the way the wind blows beforehand, otherwise abuse, negative reactions and apathy would be more hurtful in person. Its not personal, its business and it appears the majority of posters do not want our sport more Americanised.

    Good
  • I feel sorry for the girls but they shouldn't have been put in this position...

And a critical thread on Charlton Life is nothing compared to what would have happened in real life so all for the best really....
  • great news

I don't think people have been horrible.

I am glad they've been put off but it's not via the way I would of liked as I don't really like the thought of girls getting upset.

It should never have got that far. What were the club thinking??!
  • I just have a couple of points to make: (1) technically, since August 1994, thanks to the Taylor Report, it's not permitted to do a Mexican Wave at a football ground, since it would contravene ground regulations; and (2) it's a crap idea.

I wish the girls and women all the very best in their endeavours, but I hope that enough people see sense and prevent them from doing their cheerleading at The Valley.

That's ok. If they really want to prance around at football, they can contact Palace.

I'm sure they can go on their reserve list.

Well maybe they were thinking the male population of Charlton supporters would be a bit more level headed in their reaction to such an idea....for that is all it is at this point.

Not wanting US style cheerleaders at the Valley is one thing but some of the nasty and spiteful opposition to the idea and the girls in question displayed in this thread is shameful imo. A lesser reaction would have been shown had Ebola broken out at the Valley. No wonder it's upset people and doesn't exactly send out a good message to the rest of our female supporters for it makes us look sexist, disrespectful, chauvinistic and narrow minded. I wonder what Katrien makes of all this? I can hazard a guess....

It reminds me of some of the abuse and spitefulness chucked at Emma and her commentary on the clubs `Player' system. Unnecessary and uncalled for.

  • only just opened thus thread. Please God no. Has the decision been reversed yet?

A pyrrhic victory for Charlton lifers, but a victory none the less. That was all ways going to be the best or the worst way for the girls to see that it was not a good idea. Some of the comments were over the top but when you have lost your home for seven years. You don't want any thing to effect the match day experience other than red red robin, valley floyd road or since i was young.

May be we could try two Roman Gladiators knocking seven bells out of each other, one with a cafc shirt on and one wearing a millwall top. Also the millwall guy would have to be blindfolded as our record is so shocking against them.

Sadly when the first we found out about this is in a local newspaper, then the reaction was never going to be favourable. Could have been worse with them perfoming at the Watford game without anyone being made aware. Then the reaction may have been sadly ugly.

Shame that some of the girls had to see what some people had written (think I remember someone early on calling them ugly or something).

Thought it was a bad idea, but that's nothing against them personally. Just didn't think it fits in with football like it does with the American version.
  • suzi, with the greatest respect (genuinely).
As you are in a minority of one on here, or perhaps I've missed anyone else, thinking it's a good idea.
I believe you should consider that many people, genuinely, feel it would effect their lives negatively.
I do not want the club I love, to become a complete laughing stock to every fan in the country and I'm completely serious. No offence intended.

Let them do a pre-match or half time routine as novelty, once or twice a season among a variety of other entertainment acts across the season... as I believe someone suggested earlier in the thread?

I should add, they should perform as UoG Mermaids, not "Charlton Cherubs". :-)

I disagree. Girls prancing around, scantily dressed, in the main, for the "delight" of men, surely IS sexist.
Are we not as a society, meant to be respecting women for more than their looks and bodies ?
It's not for the delight of men though, it's because they enjoy it and the competition. It's men that think it's for their enjoyment and have changed it into that. Girls should be allowed to dress up in cheerleader gear without men thinking it's done for them. Men should be able to enjoy it for the 'sport' of it and the moves they perform not because of how they're dressed or how attractive they are.

I don't think these comments make us look sexist at all however, it was mainly people saying they think that such remarks would be made or that they just didn't like the thought of it at the valley. Which is a totally acceptable view.

For what it's worth I don't want cheerleaders at the valley either.
  • Honestly though, the worst thing about the whole venture is the name. Could they literally come up with no better name than Charlton Cherubs?
