The keepers at it as well , how small can he make himself trying to save that , I mean nice stretch and spring

Agree with this, thought he dived under the shot and waved a hand at it as a token gesture, did not impress me at all. Distribution was poor and Pope found touch with ease in the second half under no pressure so for all those who used to dig Hamer out, be careful what you wish for :-0

Anyone tell me what was the point of that fucking stupid pitch invasion at the end?

All started by one twat jumping on the pitch quickly followed by a couple of hundred. Nice way to treat our annual hosts pitch before the season starts. Clubs like welling struggle like mad to pay for their pitch maintenace, only to have it fucked up by a bunch of twats "aving a larf". Kind of expected it from the teenagers, but saw plenty of fully grown blokes out there who should know better.

And before people shoot me down for being a kill-joy, how would you honestly feel if we were hosting a friendly (on our nice new pitch) and all the away fans thought it would be a giggle to trample on the turf?

    Rant over.....................

Granted the tubes taking penalties and bundling the stewards were pretty feckless but I let my kids go on and they got JJ and LW to sign their shirts.
To be fair Lawrie was a legend dealing with tonnes of kids wanting autographs and photos at the end as all the other players cleared off proper fast, even mystery ankle cast man.
yep fair play to Lawrie...... Piggott also did some signing etc.
  • One day I will learn to read.

    What does this say?

Thing is, tango, how do you know that those nawty fans were supporting Charlton at the match ?

Most probably wanted autographs from our players because they support Welling....and won't get to see "top" players again until this time next year...( no disrespect to the home team )

Although, someone seated behind me yesterday said Millwall are coming to town next week....

    Just got back.

I know, it's about fitness, only a friendly, early days, don't read anything in to it, we have only been back for two weeks, different team each half, players getting to know each other, playing away after all, Welling have been in full time training for six weeks.

Full time truing for 6 weeks !!!!

    Really
It was supposed to be an ironic comment on last weeks excuses/explanations.
    (full time training)
  • Said it multiple times but Pope (and definitely Phillips) are not Championship ready. One bad day and his confidence will be shot to pieces, more pressure on a keeper than most positions, too.

Id want two new keepers and loan one of our currents out, but think we'll sign one and still not heard any strong rumours as to who..

Not to do with the Welling game but a good keeper is key to confidence throughout the team. Neuer a prime example.

How can you be so sure about Pope? Look how Cousins and Poyet did last season, goalkeepers are different, but they were both a few years younger than Pope and neither had any experience out on loan. They both made mistakes and had some bad games but it didn't destroy their confidence.

I do think we should sign a keeper, but if it's one that's going to be first choice I hope Pope goes out on loan in League 1, he needs regular football.
  • The pressure playing on loan and at League Two played into his hands, he played brilliantly and went from strength to strength. But I don't think he's ready for a full season in the Championship, playing midfield if you make errors you can be supported by 9 others, not always but usually. Making an error in the sticks at a young age with a hostile large crowd can play on your mind all day.

One more season elsewhere I'd want for Pope, or at the very least an experienced keeper to have at day to day training, and jump in if needs be. Pope has been used to being supported a very strong defensive set up too, at York, will we be that this season? Far from a given

  • Thing is Pope is the same age as Courtois! he had a great loan at York so clearly he is already a decent league 1 keeper. For the sake of our nerves we might like to see another keeper coming in but never two. Pre season should tell Peeters whether the new look back 5 is good enough: Pope, Solly, Gomez Bikey and Fox.
  • We can't afford to gamble on Pope. He may well do fine but with no experienced backup he will be under so much pressure and it could break him. Yeah courtois is the same age but if Pope was identified as being exceptional enough to be in contention for our no.1 then he wouldn't have been loaned out and would have got a chance here.
  • My 2 photos did not load.......

  • Hopefully this will work?
  • sorry about the multiple posts...
  • Stayed in the pub and got pissed

What do you mean ? Are you suggesting Gomez and Fox should play instead of Morrison & Wiggins ?

  • As I said on Twitter, at least I topped up the tan in the high street-end stand and got parked without a problem. At least that's something, Goddamit.
  • Unknown is my favourite lifer. Talks a lot of sense.
