Regarding the players I have not seen play for Charlton before I would say that Gomez, Bikey, Buyens and Ventokele will play a big part his season. Buyers keeps the ball moving and sprayed some nice passes around. Bikey is just a beast and will be good for Gomez. Ventokele played deeper than I anticipated but is clearly a good player. Didn't show his exceptional pace but maybe there is a fear if a muscle pull if he over exerts himself.
Of the others, Holmes-Dennis and Browne did not impress. Lennon was ok but passing was poor. Munns is a very tidy player but I don't think he is anywhere near Jackson, Cousins or Buyens in midfield.
Ansah linked up play nicely without looking a serious goal threat.
No Moussa which was a shame.
A little flat and disappointing but making no real judgements based on this performance.
Result not the issue, but the fact we can't score goals and barely capable of creating chances is becoming a concern...
But Bobby's got loads of experience, and great knowledge of the Championship, so sure it will all be fine.
He's only 40 to be fair, wouldn't say he has 'loads', and he's only played in the Championship, doubt he watched it week in week out while he was managing a club in Belgium. Not putting him down, but he's been managing just 4 years, not 'loads' of experience, if anything he's inexperienced?
Good question, so I thought I'd put my thoughts down rationally:
1) Peeters is about the same age as Chris Powell was, when he first became manager at Charlton.
2) It was CP's first manager's job, so my reckoning is that Peeters' (with his previous manager's experience in Belgium) is already more experienced than CP was at the time of his appointment.
CP was dismissed from Charlton after just over 3 years experience in the job.
3) At the time of his appointment here, CP had been working under a couple of renowned managers in Nigel Worthington and Sven Goran Eriksen at Leicester in the Championship.
4) Peeters' has played in the Championship himself (albeit around 10 years ago), so has some grasp of how physical and demanding it is.
5) Peeters' right hand man is Damien Matthew - who has been 1st team coach here for a number of years, served under Powell and Riga, and knows the Championship well.
Matthew will also be familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the surviving players from last season's squad.
Providing Peeter's and Matthew are able to work well with each other, it could be an effective management team we have here at Charlton.
Time will tell - but of course, very early days right now.
Charlton Athletic FC @CAFCofficial · 3m 40' Munns is playing well for Charlton here. His long diagonal is controlled and volleyed at goal by Church, easy save in the end #CAFCLive
I can confirm that Munns is not playing well. I can also confirm that Church's volley travelled goalwards at around 3mph.
wow, so interesting. i recall all the scorers except my minds gone blank on debolla? in 02/03?
He was a young striker that we signed from Villa. He did OK at reserve level, but never made the 1st team.
It's a shame, Mark was a smashing kid. He played with my son a long time ago. Was at Palace a few years then Villa, Gareth Barry used to room and look after him. He was a very very good player at youth level I guess he just didn't get the break? I know his Mum & Dad moved to Florida, this is why he ended up there.
I know, it's about fitness, only a friendly, early days, don't read anything in to it, we have only been back for two weeks, different team each half, players getting to know each other, playing away after all, Welling have been in full time training for six weeks.
And basically we lost to the better team.
Can we read anything in to it?
Well my reflections are that in the first half we were set up to defend. Wiggy, who is behind Fox in his physical readiness, gave away a pen which Phillips got a hand to, and we were behind early doors. We posed no real threat, and Jack Munns was our best player, followed by Jordan Cousins and Lawrie Wilson. When Holmes-Dennis switched to the right he was more effective. We managed a couple of shots on target, and a couple of corners and that was about it. There was no especial change of style with continental intrigue, a long ball, win the challenges sort of half, which Welling dominated comfortably.
Second half a new 11. A better half from Charlton which we dominated, but Welling defended in numbers and scored from a breakaway, and in my view fully deserved to win.
Oh yeah, results don't matter. So was there anything else, well we are waiting for our first goal in the Peeters era still, but of the new guys we saw Ventokele was the best one, Bikey next and then Buyens. However in the second half in my view Gomez, Fox, Jackson, Solly and Harriott were the best players on show. I can see why Igor can be a nuisance, Bikey was a classic centre half who can do a little bit, and Buyens quite liked being upfield, trying a few ineffective fancy flicks and passes, but I am waiting to see the box to box midfielder he is purported to be, maybe that is yet to come. Loic continues to encourage then frustrate.
We huffed and puffed first half, we were huffier and puffier second half, but it was decidedly 'meh' in terms of our team, our players, our football, and our style. We had paid no particular respect or regard to Welling, and we paid the price in terms of enjoying a positive result.
Here we go again all doom and gloom. Nothing changes
No excuses. Not a perfect 10 as the post was short but calling doom and gloom, when no poster has really done that and going on about people complaining makes it close enough. Well done.
10) Make up claim about criticism made and go on about it at length about how negative people are being
Worst result in Welling in 24 years though. It is not a great start to the domestic pre season.

The jury is out, and has some doubt.
This! I liked the look of Bikey, Gomez, Buyens and Vetokele all of whom I saw for the first time. Scoring goals was an issue last season and clearly not solved yet so we get a new striker in... is this the loan from West Ham which is rumoured? With him and Gudmundsson I hope we start improving the number of chances on goal.
After Brentford (a) we have a tough run of games - no doubt the usual suspects will be out having a moan if we're not top of the league by end August but it's going to take some time for this new squad to gel - hopefully not too long
Stopped reading there lol.. Get the ball, turn and pass it, chuck in a few long balls, very mediocre performance. He also chases shadows as a form of marking, not beefy enough to get stuck into a tackle which you need in centre park. No way anyone in that first half was our best player let alone Jack Munns.
I wouldn't put him near a Charlton Championship squad, I'd loan him lower down the leagues and see how it goes from there.

Or. (and I am not saying he was great)
Get the ball= always available and in a supporting position.
Turn and pass it= apart from two occasions always found a red shirt, unlike others.
Chuck in a few long balls=vary the play, his long balls contributed to our only two attempts in the first half.
Chases shadows=working back because others were out of position
Not beefy enough to get stuck into a tackle which you need in centre park= not beefy enough to get stuck into a tackle which you need in centre park, but gave it a go anyway.
No way anyone in that first half was our best player let alone Jack Munns= we weren't great first half but which Charlton player was clearly better?
Not having a go at all, simply I had a different viewpoint.
9) when FPP FFP (you fuckwit) starts hitting home results don't matter any more and we're going to start pulling away from Bournemouth and Leeds. in 6 months a few clubs will be out of the transfer market but this is irrelevant right now because we need decent results in the first 10 league games
10) losing at Welling was actually deliberate to make sure the fan's expectations are managed so that even fourth from bottom is seen as a success is a wake up call for the squad - the first half performance was not good but the second half showed more pace and precision. Add Gudmondsson, Moussa, Reza and a new striker to that second half team + Wilson and Cousins from the first half and we have something in terms of a first 18
11) we have some promising kids in the under-15slike Gomez and Fox that we will be blooding by Christmas, the future is bright! Older players will have to raise their game to be in the first team
12) mmfumphhmm blrmuphmmblurp (sorry hard to talk with Roland's **** in my mouth) some fans are cocksuckers and enjoy seeing us lose so they have someone to blame - I feel for them especially when we weren't relegated last season!
No need to worry given a number of pieces not playing and our best players not playing together. First half had 3 u21 midfielders, a u21 centre half and two forwards who will be loaned out or will barely touch the pitch this year. If anything it was a poor referendum of our vaunted academy than anything. I will judge a preseason game when gundmunson (starter), moussa (starter), reza ( primary reserve), and potential incoming signings/starters at CF and RW play.

Brentford should be included as part of a tough run of games. A newly promoted team looking to start the season off with a bang. Played together, won promotion over 2 tough campaigns against a newly formed Charlton team who have yet to establish a pattern of play with a lot of new players who have yet to gel. This could easily be a 2 to 3 goal defeat. Charlton underestimate Brentford at their peril.
Easy winner for the excuses and follow up bingo there Seriously Red. ;-) A true champion.
I saw my first live Charlton game in 2 years today.
1st half was like I had never been away 2nd half I liked the passing and pace in the team but we were never gonna score. Well done the Wings. And fook was it hot!
The way I see it. I think it's better we lost playing at a steady pace like we did, so hopefully Peeters can identify who's good enough and who's not while also giving a run out for the majority of the squad, than to send out the strongest line up possible and paste a Welling side that will have nothing to do with our season, won't expose any of our weaknesses and give some false illusion that we're a cracking team and there are no flaws to our playstyle. I'm purely taking the positives out of this, it's a friendly, can just tell Welling wanted it more, had about 9 in their box the second half.
I know, it's about fitness, only a friendly, early days, don't read anything in to it, we have only been back for two weeks, different team each half, players getting to know each other, playing away after all, Welling have been in full time training for six weeks.

For any team, the worst teams to play on the opening are the newly promoted ones.
Brentford are flying, two seasons ago they should have gone up on the last day of the season, but a missed pen in the last minute resulting in our 'friends' Doncaster going straight up the other end and scoring and being champions. Then of course Brentford go up last season. It will be a good result for us getting a draw.
Really liked seeing Solly get forward and run that wing as we know he can, but would like to see him up against some tough opposition. He was playing against a very young very very inexperienced LB for Welling, poor lad looked out of his depth and was getting slated by other players and management all match.
Our target man signing will define our season, get it wrong and we may have a bunch of nuisance-esque players with no end product. Also agree with all of Swisdom has said, good evaluation my man

Big year for Pigott and Harriott. Need to get consistency. Harriot still needs to slow down
Lennon is a big lad but need to stop trying the hollywood ball. Keep it simple lad
Nego needs a burger. There is a player in there but he is too lightweight
Solly got forward well
Vetokele looks a nuisance. Needs a partner
Ansah was just ok. Not what I expected - not in a good way
Cousins did well
Bikey is the new Sam Sodje. Will do some great stuff and then annoy you with a silly foul. Big unit
Munns I can't ever see making it at this level.hes no Valbuena
Buyens will be decent.
