Welling v Charlton - updates

  • Even though I had bought a programme and had a pen with me the usual dire tannoy system at Welling made making out the new players a touch tricky - except the 5ft 2" Munns - so please take this with some latitude. It seems those on here had a better idea than me who was playing.......

First half was poor & if Sir Bob can't now see that Church & Pigott couldn't score in a brothel then I will welcome back Jose Riga with open arms. Both looked out of sorts & it wouldnt bother me if I never see them in a Charlton shirt again. Munns looked ok but I think his statue (or lack of it) may be his downfall. Cousins looked good in centre midfield but didn't think either no 7 (Holmes -Dennis ??) or no 11 (who I thought was Hariott) looked any good.

Second half was a lot better & Pope hardly got a touch of the ball.....apart from to pick it out of the net !!. Bikey is a man mountain & Fox had a good game as a wingback (he pushed on a lot). Buyens looked steady & JJ his normal self. Didn't know who the front 2 were & surprised to find when I got home that one was Ansah........both looked out of ideas when in front of goal and our front line is looking worse than last year.

That was only the 2nd time I've seen us lose at Welling & looking at the stats its the first time they have scored 2 against us without reply. As mentioned earlier that is now 2.5 games without a goal & I just wonder if a couple of proven championship players rather than the Jonny foreigner's that we've been signing may help gel the side.

  • Jackson's free kick !!
  • Impressed with Joe Gomez. Can see why there is big interest in him. Get him signed up to a long term contract now. I like the look of Bikey, I wonder if they will both start the season. I think we are going to need an experienced keeper, Popes promising but an uncertain start could hurt him. Good to see Solly back, what a class act he is. Ventokele looked threatening and will only improve and Buyens was always asking for the ball and never hid. Still feel we need that extra bit of class in centre midfield, someone like Andy Reid who can spot an opening although maybe that man is Moussa. Yes it was disappointing today and Welling were definitely more up for it than us. We are getting so many new players now its going to be hard to knit it all together so from now on in maybe a more settled team is needed.

    Player rating out of 5

    First Half

Phillips | 1.5 - Made a couple of saves, not ready.
Wilson | 3.5 - Best player for me first half, very vocal and looked up for it.
Morrison | 1.5 - Passes back too much and didn't exactly show he's our first choice.
    Lennon | 1 - ...
    Wiggins | 0.5 - Rinsed, gave away a pen
Browne | 0.5 - Wilsons head shakes said it all, no awareness.
Cousins | 2 - Wasn't his best, a few nice flicks, half assed.
Munns | 2.5 - Was going for it, trying to impress, nice touch, very tiny for a CM.
    Holmes | 1 - Nothing to say.
Church | 0 - Don't care how hard he tries, awful first touch, fell over and awful shots.
Pigott | 1.5 - Ok control, decent workrate, bad shooting, more threatening than Church.

    Second half

Pope | 0 - Not because he is bad, but he was untested and the once chance they got they scored.
Solly | 3 - Minor errors, good runs.
Bikey | 3.5 - Tanky, very vocal, gonna be a real powehouse for us. Fan favourite.
Gomez | 3.5 - Hope he shows some loyalty, future star, confident, could be vital for us.
Fox | 2.5 - Decent going forward, won a few balls in the air, better than an unfit Wiggins.
    Nego | 2 - ...
Jackson | 2 - Some bad balls into the box, average free kick.
Buyens | 3 - Looks promising, looking like our first choice CM
Harriott | 2.5 - Great footwork as per, but too much of it, good energy.
Ansah | 2.5 - Look dangerous at times, needs to work on his finishing.
Vetokele | 3 - Great first touch, can already tell he's miles better than our other strikers (bar Reza)

My reviews probably aren't great, more biased towards one side of the pitch cause of where I stood hence the '...'

Bit gutted I didn't get to watch Moussa play, all in good time I suppose. I wouldn't get too disheartened. Winning a friendly hardly means we'll have a good season shows history. Hopefully Bob makes the right team selection, isn't hard to tell who isn't good enough.

My starting 11 (from today) for Brentford would be 433

    Pope
    Solly Bikey Gomez/Morrison Fox
    Cousins Buyens Jackson
    Wilson Vetokele Harriott

Really looking forward to watching Moussa and Gudmundsson play.

Apologies if it has been mentioned elsewhere but why we're playing in last seasons kit?! We were wearing the new one in Belgium so no idea why we would wear the old one today?!
  • Interesting to see Welling playing a 4-2-3-1 and Charlton 4-4-2. It was 3 v 2 in Cent Mid and Healy(10) as the spare man had a big influence on the first half, directing much of Welling's play in the space between our defence & midfield. peters stayed with 2 in Cent Mid, probably because he had already selected 2 x 4-4-2 line-ups. I'd like to see three Central Midfield right from the off next season, to avoid us getting outnumbered in the central areas as happened a few times last season. Jackson-Buyens-Cousins? not fussed if it's 4-3-3, 4-4-1-1, 4-2-3-1 or the diamond, as long as we have numbers in the central areas.

I'm assuming Buyens was in friendly mode today. A good passer and brought players into the game well, but looked a little slow across midfield. Championship games are obviously quicker than pre-season games, so four weeks to get up to speed. if he does, he will be useful.

Lent it to Woolwich Arsenal for the day

  • Look at 18 & 14 in that wall in wwtone's picture could they try and hide anymore

  • Some of the knee-jerk bed-wetting on here is cringe-worthy.

This is not even a proper game FFS, we played two different mix and match teams in each half and never put anything like our first choice XI out at the same time.

    Perspective, please.

    Firstly. were you there ?

Secondly. Are you saying that a SQUAD of CHAMPIONSHIP players are not expected to beat a TEAM of players from the CONFERENCE (4 leagues lower). Is was only a friendly, not a cup tie & there was nothing at stake. So why did we look 4 leagues LOWER than them.

    Excuses Bingo

    Start off excuse with

    10) Make up claim about criticism made that no one is doing and end with (and go on about it about how negative people are being)

    Excuse

    1) Its only a friendly exercise
    4) If you combine the two teams there is a strong team in there

    Very good answer.
  • Can't see any bed wetting, just mild concerns we've lost a game by a couple of goals that we'd only lost once in 20 years, and that for the third run out now, we've not hit the target, which is very rare in early Pre season friendlies.

Going through the list of friendlies concerning Championship clubs today, Charltons was by far the worst. Of course it doesn't mean a jot, but it does show there is a lot of work to do to get us up to a competitive Championship team level, IMO.
  • The midfield in that first team would struggle to dominate in the lower tiers of England, 7th and so. Bar Jordan they got so over run and I think big Bob underestimated Welling looking at our previous scores with them. Wellings man in the hole ran riot and Big Bob did nothing about it, friendly or not looked a bit amateur.

Apart from we're only 3 leagues above them.
  • It's hardly like we've got a starting 11 of Daviid Luiz's , I don't know about Lols and likes, but I do think we could do with a meltdown button.

People can always pull out results where lower league sides have caused an upset(I remember being at Northwich a few years ago) BUT all day long we should not lose to a team three leagues below us.

They were told Kermorgant takes Charlton's direct freekicks

  • Friendly, so the result really doesn't tell you anything. However, we usually play two teams at Welling, so nothing new there, except the first-half line up was very weak once you got beyond the back four. Agree with Tutt-Tutt re Buyens. Dowie played the youth team in 2006 and claimed no one had told him we normally sent the first team.
  • Just reading the match report on the OS:

The Addicks were slow out of the blocks at Park View Road and the only early glimmer of excitement came when Joe Pigott showed sublime chest control to pluck a ball out of the bar, beat a man, but saw his shot blocked by a Wings defender.

No wonder the team didn't perform in the 1st half.

    .
  • Seriously Red thinks we have fans who want us to lose and are disappointed when we don't get releagated, calls someone a fuckwit and a cocksucker, then ends up with a smiley face.

That's what losing the plot looks like.
  • Don't ask me Uboat, I'm a parasite apparently !

What a load of utter, utter rubbish. How long have I been banging on about our vacuous midfield? - Two full seasons at least. Today at Welling when we made a defensive clearance, the ball would drop ten yards outside our box and there was never one single red shirt to claim it. We simply watched while Welling spread the ball wide to swing crosses over - or advance centrally, at will. Who, exactly, are our midfielders? Entirely vapid.

I think there is something even worse than this absence. When we attacked in the second half, our man with the ball at his feet would approach the box diagonally, be confronted by a Welling defender - and pass to the wrong man. This simple ten-yard pass was received with our customary lack of control - lack of basic technical ability - the ball bobbled up off his foot and the Welling defender cleared easily. Yet there was a man of ours unmarked ten yards the other way, open and willing to receive and get clear.

This happened repeatedly and exemplifies what is wrong at Sparrows Lane - our players have not been trained to make the right decisions. At speed with the ball approaching the box - should he pass left or right? Quickly. He passes the wrong way.

There were all the usual nervous sideways passes, over-hit crosses, long balls to nowhere, strikers immobile, and Jackson hammering a free-kick straight in to the wall. We have lost 2-0 to a team three divisions below us.

    That was absolutely bloody ghastly.

  • Anyone know where Mussa was?

You act as if we could have played 22 players on the pitch.

Not saying the result was exactly a great success but squad or team, makes not a blind bit of difference when the teams are mix and match anyway.
