How can people be this negative about a 45 min pre season game against a team 2 weeks ahead of us in terms of training with our team only starting pre season with a football on Monday (only fitness last week I think?) also the team we played against have a champs league qualifier in a few weeks time
ALL that matters is fitness and start to get match sharpness in pre season. Anyone remember Piggott at welling last year? He was going to be our savior!
I agree, but then you have to question the wisdom of the "network" hyping this up. Should have come three weeks later. Except that the Euro leagues tend to start earlier than ours. Yes, well that's the problem Roland, football isn't like other businesses.
They were always going to hype up a tournament though. If they didn't there would be outcry from some areas that it wasn't hyped up / advertised. There will be hype about all matches in ore season as there often is.
Also if we weren't involved in the tournament because it is a bit early in our pre season there would be more outcry because. We would clearly not be important enough in the network to warrant a place in the tournament
Is there anything that RD can do right in your eyes?
fully get it that slagging off can affect player confidence, but when spectators witness poor performances on a regular basis, then what IS the correct response then...?

Why add that last sentence, without bothering to read my recent comments? I think the new signings are clearly a step up from those in Jan, I think he did the best he could with Poyet, I am sure the new pitch will be good. I am strongly pro his emphasis on youth, and I believe Peeters may be good for us. I am not against the network per se, but am waiting to see how it pans out. ok with you now?
On the other hand I think that RD tends not to listen to people with expertise unless he knows them well. I happen to know that Charlton's training and Physio team were very concerned at how early this tourno has come in the build up, but they have been over ruled and I am not sure to what good purpose. I don't think this tourno will be repeated next season.
Very few things in this game are black and white. If you want to divide people on CL into pro and anti this and that, be my guest, but I'm not playing.

Why only comment on that last sentence? Sorry if it seems to dig you out but most (not all, like some other people) of your comments appear to be over negative about RD.
I can see a number of faults with how he runs things but overall he has done well, but I think that, based on this summer, he has learned from his mistake of January where he openly admitted (through his 'mouthpiece' KM - she said she was his eyes, ears and sometimes his mouth in an early interview) that they underestimated the strength of the league. I can't see us getting given poor 'network' players and told we have to play them this season. I DO think he cares most about SL - he is a fan, however, I DON'T think that will be to the detriment to us, or Alcoron or the German team or any other side in the network.
There are some on here that I am fairly sure still pine for the 'good old days' of the Valley party and the closeness you all were to the board at the time, I am too young for that, my first game was against port vale in 1992, at a 'kids for a quid' game that the project 10k group came up with. Now I have no idea who you are but perhaps you fall into that category, perhaps you don't, but the reality of the situation is that with RD - and *probably* any other owner we could have had, we as fans won't have that closeness anymore. Is that sad/upsetting, YES. Does that make the new era of owner a bad person/is it proof that he doesn't care about the club, NO
Now Prague, I do apologise if it appears that I am digging you and only you out, but it is not intended to cause you any offence, just MY observation
Incidentally amongst all this, don't forget the Belgian league starts 2 weeks before ours. They will be a long way clear of us fitness wise (both SL and the team tonight)
I thought it was a useful workout. As others have said SL looked fitter. Think we still need a few new players. Church is Church. Bob doesn't appear to have inspired him and Harry Lennon needs to get some L2 experience before we throw him into the deepend. Otherwise all of the players on the pitch looked useful.
Not impressed with the new signings... thought Vetokele looked incredibly lazy, every time i saw him he was sitting on his arse.
0% pass completion, not even a shot on goal - get rid. As for Bob, it's played one, lost one, goals zero. Boo Peeters out. Definitely going down.
Well, I thought Igor was good. I made it 100% pass completion, not a single one of his shots were off target, all his teammates knew where he was and he's so fit he wasn't even out of breath at the end. Best player ever. Sell him for 10 billion quid, then we can all have a moan about loyalty.

It wasnt meaningless as it was a non in-house run out against proper opposition. It's about shape, fitness and players getting to know each other.
But as it was on astro, only 45 and against a team wearing bibs, it felt meaningless.
Making bold observational statements based on that is silly, yet that doesn't mean people can't comment on what they saw. Very few players impressed, and the negative that surprised me most was the sheer number of mis-placed simple passes.
Todays game should feel a better test. Most fans got all excited when we put in an impressive performance against Sporting Lisbon last summer. Last night looked a nothing performance. But I wouldn't read too deep into it.
The main point of this and the Spanish trip is what happens off the pitch, not on it. Squad relationship building is going to be key this summer.

Cheers Dan, I couldn't watch it last night as I was working, so I came on here this morning to see how it went.
All I found was that Church is shit and Matt Holland was worse!!!!
So you can have a career that spans 17 years, play more than 550 games, represent your country 49 times and still not be able to tackle, pass, be comfortable on the ball etc etc. Ridiculous.
Scoring a 20 yard thunderbolt at a world up is not bad either for this so called pathetic excuse for a player.

That's OK and on reflection my comment about the wisdom of the tournament was unnecessarily waspish, put it down to good Czech beer and World Cup adrenaline.
I still think the tournament is a mistake in the timing and setup, even if a good idea in principle, and as I said I mainly want to hear that we return without any serious injuries.
As an aside, the other thing that surprises me is how RD is unafraid in this tournament to publicly demonstrate that Ujpest and STVV are part of his network, when the official position to the Belgian FA and UEFA is that they are under separate ownership. Like I have said, I am not against him, he has a lot of ideas which are intriguing, but I think he has a pig-headed streak which may land him with avoidable problems.

This is THE issue with RD and whether he will ultimately prove a success or not for Charlton. He's got a vision, a view of how things SHOULD be done, and he's going to do them that way no matter what. If any one club suffers at the cost of the network as a whole, he will take that as a necessary evil I suspect, though I am sure his intention is for all to benefit, and his stock (literal and metaphorical) to rise accordingly. Problem is that while KM may yet prove to be an excellent person to keep the club running, she is ultimately beholden to RD and I doubt she has an awful lot of personal power to make decisions re: transfers, or the hiring/firing of match staff like coaches. If RD's plan works out for the best, and I am hopeful it will, we are set for long success. If it fails, we could be deep in the sticky brown smelly stuff.
Getting a little more back on topic, I like the idea of the tournament in principle- but with the clubs coming from different leagues and with squads at different levels of preparation/readiness, it's not particularly helpful for Big Bob in assessing the strengths/weaknesses of the squad. Players who were slightly disappointing yesterday could well be much better once they're more up to speed and settled - he'll already know that, not a lot is gained. It will be the end of this month at least before everyone is fully ready for the season ahead I think.
(But I still don't think Church is or ever will be better than okay at best.)
Simon church continuing his brilliant form from last season
surely bp will get the church truth after this tournee? then, on loan to orient/gillingham/swindon...and quietly released after this season...
Try supporting him this season instead of slagging him off all the time then you might see a better player.
Truth hurts .... He's simply useless.
I cannot understand some peoples comments on here! I'm sorry but he really, simply, definitely, is not useless! I'm not he's greatest fan but come on man the man is a Welsh International footballer, his scoring record is not great I grant you but surely you can't criticise his work rate and help for his team. I really think if everyone got behind him and gave him a bit of support we might see an improved player. What good does constantly slagging off our own players??? I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and it is a public forum but I do find it a bit tiring and very counter productive........
For what it's worth this is "only" my opinion!!
COYR....
You get the feeling Church could get man of the match every week and he will still be slagged off. Certain people have their talons in him and there is nothing that can change that until he's hounded out. Just ask Kevin Lisbie , David Mooney and Simon Francis ( to name just a few ) who all went on to do well at clubs who's fans got behind them.
I understand Super Kev can only train a couple of times a week for O's, a division below us. Still put money on him to outscore Spongefoot at any level. My most hated player since clean shorts. Stealing a living.
Who was clean shorts?
Matt Hollands. Captain. Parker's replacement. Ran around a lot but ball had moved forward by the time he got there. Midfielder. 15y+ senior career never booked. Was it chopper Harris said after a late tackle " I got there as soon as I could ref" With MH not only the ball but the player had gone by the time he turned up.
All you're saying is how little you understand a player's role in the team.
And Matt Holland wasn't Parker's replacement, he played alongside Parker in the same team.
Did he tackle? No Did he pass forward? No Did he go past players? No Could he pick out an incisive pass? No Could he pick up a runner? No Did he keep the ball moving at a high tempo (a la Diego) No Was he comfortable on the ball? No Did he try to gee up the crowd? Yes Was he instrumental in the dressing room bust up? Yes Were his shorts always clean? Yes

This is the same poster who wanted Connor Gough back as our goalkeeper for the forthcoming season. The same Connor Gough who played two games in 2 seasons for Bristol Rovers and has been released by a team now relegated to the Conference.
